Sidney Crosby - The most hated player in the NHL

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

He is viewed as smug, arrogant and classless... when citizens of his OWN country burn his picture, in the same year that he was on a gold medal Olympic team , I think it speaks volumes of how he is viewed by majority of NHL fans...

The NHL needs to hitch it's horse to someone else, and FAST, while it still can...

as much as I hate to say it, if the Hawks win the cup, I could see the NHL hitching a ride on the Toews wagon. MAYBE.

At least he actually carries himself like a captain and plays the game with some honor... I REALLY don't want to see the Hawks win the cup, but Toews would be a drastic step up in terms of marketing... I would like to see them market Stamkos more to be honest, it just sucks he's in such a crap market...

I'm sure the lot of them have the charisma of soggy cardboard. I'd always prefer to watch a Crosby pass or Ovechkin wrist shot than listening to either of them or anyone else mumble their canned responses to a mob of reporters.

It's okay, though, they don't have to be the most interesting men in the universe -- they just need to be good at hockey, I mute that crap anyways.

He reminds me of Patrick Roy.

I find that they choose a guy everyone hates for all the wrong reasons the "Face of the New NHL". What a joke.

That's the general point... the picked the wrong guy... I think Ovechkin would be, if it weren't for the language barrier... but they need to choose a new "face"

Ok answer this.

Which NHL player are they going to market?

Crosby has over 500 points before he is 23, career 1.3 PPG in the post season, a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold, Hart trophy, Lester etc.

Just on those accomplishments alone he's going to be marketed, not to mention the fact that he portrays himself as mildly as a cucumber to the media.

Stamkos will get his attention soon enough, but there aren't a lot of players that are in the top 3 of scoring perennially like Crosby and Ovechkin have since they've been in the league.

Maybe if Datsyuk, Malkin, Parise etc. followed up their performances 2 years ago they would be included with Ovechkin/Crosby but they didn't. It's clear that Ovechkin/Crosby are far and away are consistently two of the best players year in year out.

It's not JUST about points either - Punching another guy in the junk from behind, taking all kinds of other cheapshots, not shaking hands and overall flopping around and acting like he's been shot with a shotgun over the smallest shots, just to return to the ice 2 shifts later... he portrays the game in a poor light and is a HORRIBLE role model for young players - THAT is not a face the league should market... hell, even though I can't stand him, how about Getzlaf? Even he plays the game with more honor - close to the same PPG, has a Stanley Cup, Olympic gold and is young as well... or even Bobby Ryan... my point is, there are plenty of others in the league that would represent the league better...

I don't hate Crybaby but I have no respect for him for numerous reasons, but mostly because he has no class and tarnishes the title of Captain with his childish antics and dirty play.

Absolutely there are some aspects of hockey I don't understand. Number one I can't figure out what a penalty is or maybe the problem is I don't understand why some things are penalty for one team but not another. Or maybe I don't understand why the NHL can't find officials that understand the concept of calling a game fairly for both teams on the ice.

Finally, If the Wings didn't have several of the best players in the league then I may have a reason to be jealous but we have Zetterberg, Datsyuk and Lidstrom. Plus I can't think of anyone on our team that stoop to socking a guy in the nuts from behind while he is bent over and one of your teamates is pounding on his head.

Perhaps the fact that Montreal fans did this, and the fact that there are incessant Crosby threads on LGW indicates the depth of feeling towards him?

Outside of Pittsburgh and NHL head office he is the most unpopular player in the NHL - by both fans and players.

I work with a big Montreal fan, after this series he said to me today "I see what you've been complaining about Pittsburgh and Crosby for the last 2 years. It was embaressing at times"

Cheapshots? Are we talking about the same player?

When I think of cheapshots I think of Ovechkin putting a player into the boards from behind, or kneeing other players. You know actually plays that could end careers?

Crosby isn't an angel on the ice, but hockey is a physical and emotional game I'd be worried if a player didn't show any emotion. I hate the diving, but it's up to the NHL to enforce it not the players. Hockey is a competitive game and you have to use every advantage you can. Don't act like Crosby is the pioneer of embellishing.

Getzlaf and Ryan are not in the same class as Crosby/Ovechkin are. As a league you have to market your very BEST players.

I don't even really care about marketing, I just like watching hockey and watching Ovechkin/Crosby play is quite a treat and I'm happy to leave it at that.

Marketing is about attracting new fans, not to satisfy existing fans that's what the game itself is for.

Did you just say that Getzlaf has close to the same PPG as Crosby?

Crosby's career PPG is 1.36, Getzlaf's is 0.93. Getzlaf's BEST season was 1.12, Crosby WORST season was 1.26.

Crosby is an awesome player. One of the best in the NHL but the way the hockey media (canadians mostly) talk about him makes me sick. I remember bill melrose on espn before the habs series saying that Crosby wouldent let what happend to Ovechkin's caps happen to the pens. Well look what happend. It was sickening how he was saying Crosby fears losing and going on and on. That is the reason I hate him. I have since he was drafted and made captain. Has nothing to do with them beating the Red Wings last year.

And using a low-class player as the face of the league does not attract new fans... it just makes it look like more of a mickey mouse operation...

I would easily argue that Crosby isn't even the best player on his own team, let alone the league and also, he averages more ice time than any other forward in the league not named Kovalchuk... you can argue this all day long, but he is NOT worthy of being the face of the league. period.

I don't see how that isn't CLOSE to the same... I didn't say it WAS the same... also, when you average in ice time and supporting cast, I don't see that big of a difference as far as point total... I'm not saying Getzlaf is a better or even comparable player on skill level alone, my point is, it's not that far of a stretch...

Get Stamkos to NY and then we can really talk...

Perfect.

I would love to hear this.

I would love to see how a 23 year old with 381 points in 309 games is better than and 22 year old with 506 points in 370 games.

Not to mention one is a much better face off man. Guess which one?

Bill Guerin and Chris Kunitz versus Downie and St. Louis and Malone...

Hell Getzlaf played with Perry and Ryan! Talk about a hell of a supporting cast...

Put Crosby with Perry and Ryan.

Over a career? Yes.

Over 5 games? Not so much.

Malkin is great don't get me wrong, and if he has another great season next year he'll be right back up there with Crosby/Ovechkin.

Put Getzlaf with Malkin(whom he played with for a large chunk) and Guerin

you're man love is so sickening, you can't even be objective... no one is arguing his ability, I'm just making the point that it's not a DRASTIC difference and there are more factors that should go into it than how many points they have...

Also... at least all those players have moved out on their own by 22...

Malkin barely EVER played even strength with Crosby. Most of their points came on the power play together.

35% of Getzlaf's points were scored with Perry + Ryan on even strength.

dobberhockey.com look it up I am being objective

that would be 100% acceptable. you know why? cause he's the closest thing in the NHL in every aspect to a former Wings great...Steve Yzerman. classy individual, plays the game the way it should be played and doesn't whine like a ***** everytime something goes the least bit wrong. that would be the best move the NHL could do.
