Red Wings patiently waiting for Lidstrom's decision

My take is this...

Holland has stated that he wants to add a 4th line grinder-type, right?? Well, after making qualifying offers to his RFA's, wrapping up Lidstrom, and wrapping up Homer, he's going to start looking into those types of guys. Maybe one will be available who's all of the same things but a third liner, or a second liner, a guy that can really score, play defense, check, fight, the whole package. maybe he'd even be willing to take a discount in order to play on this great team? he'll still probably need all of bert's money though, lol.

Huds certainly has his flaws but he's also the closest thing to a sniper the Wings can afford right now. If he can adapt to the competition that comes with playing on the second line, he will fit very nicely into a niche the Wings have been looking to fill for the past year. The Wings have two elite playmakers who also know how to score and play exceptionally well defensively in Datsyuk and Zetterberg.

Hudler is a better playmaker than Zetterberg. He's not the sniper Z is, but a better playmaker.

I'm a little confused about something, so I hope someone here can clear this up.

The article states this...

The Red Wings have their pro scouting meetings June 2-3. Holland, Babcock, assistant GM Jim Nill, senior vice president Jimmy Devellano, vice president Steve Yzerman and the scouting staff will gather in Detroit to go over the team's roster and discuss potential free agents and trade possibilities.

Now what I'm confused about is, Stevie Y is Tampa's GM now, so will he still be at this meeting on the 2nd and 3rd of June, to go over the Wings' roster? In a way, it'd be pretty awkward for him and the others I'd imagine, since he's no longer part of the Wings' organization (for the time being I hope..).

Yzerman will definitely not be there. He is no longer tied to the Red Wings organization in any way. He will be at the Lightning's pro-scout meetings.

That's what I thought. I just wasn't sure why the article would say that, because I'm sure the Wings' Org already knew. Hell, all of us fans already knew right when they said there was a 3pm press conference.

Hudler is above average defensively? Hudler works hard? I'm sure you'll provide some miraculous stats to prove these opinions. Hudler is not a two-way player in any shape or form, and he disappears against bigger, faster teams (because he absolutely cannot out-muscle anyone in this league).

Hudler is not above average defensively when compared to the Wings' roster of the past few years, no. But compared to the LEAGUE? Yes. And as for hard work? I guess I don't see how whether he can outmuscle a guy in the corner determines whether he works hard. Despite his size, Hudler goes into the corners and fights for pucks, and he is always willing to crash the net. He puts out a full effort every s*** and does what he can to try and help the team. He's not perfect, but he has definitely improved since he has started with the team (making the team out of camp as a 19 year old despite Holland's standard "bury them in the minors" process due to his impressive skill, BTW)

There are a lot of guys who are 5 inches and 25 lbs heavier than Hudler who aren't nearly as willing to go into the corners or crash the net. But they can probably outmuscle Hudler, so they work harder, right?

The league youre referring is the AHL I'm assuming? Because in the NHL Hudler is not above average defensively, hes weak. Without playing with the guys on the wings who are all solid 2 ways pretty much he would be screwed.

Youre right he can't outmuscle guys so going to the nets in the corners doesn't really matter because when he gets there he gets muscled off completely. He's good on the PP, offensive situations and against other teams third lines, thats about it.

You Hudler lovers who think he's so amazing don't remember him on the 4th line the last time he was playing here do you?

You make this type of contribution sound completely lame when it's something that Detroit actually needed this season, esp early on. Hudler had 28 points on the PP in 08/09 - would not have been bad to have considering the PP% dropped by 5 percentage points this season. Given the injuries having that kind of depth on the 4th line would've been nice wouldn't you say?

But I'm assuming that you think that contribution and some energy and hustle from, as you call him, 4th line player and PP specialist, is useless given that he's a little midget who just gets pushed around? Just because he doesn't have Dat's or Zett's combination of skill on offense and defense or Bertuzzi's size doesn't make him a bum and you know it...

Edit: Spelling.

I think i just died a little inside

I felt it too.

Ah well, Yzerman is moving up in the world, nothing but happiness for the man.

But it's still kind of like.... say one day you come home from school...and your dad goes, "Sorry son, I'm moving onto another family today, I'll see you once or twice a season when my new kids try to beat the crap out of you and the rest of my old kids." Then as he slowly walks away, he turns one last time and says, "Tell your mom I love her, I left a shirt up in the rafters for you to remember me by."

-----

I like the prospect of having Hudler....but the man needs to invest in some Weight Gain 3000 or something. When you got guys out there like "Buff" clocking in at 6'5", 256 pounds....leading teams through the finals.....somehow small speedy guys doesn't work anymore unless they have a LOT of skill (ie. at least that of say, Martin St Louis.....but what notable work has he done lately as well?). Really, it hasn't worked well since the 90's ;-p

A small second line scorer....he needs to bring something else to the table too. I mean granted I'd rather have him out there than Williams anyday...but come playoff time...Hudler couldn't do half of what even Bertuzzi did this year unless he really steps up in other areas. (Lol to include half as many *** penalties). Bertuzzi was pound for pound...one of our best players this postseason....and sometimes one of our worst.

If they gave an award for being most and least valuable to your team, I think Bert would get nominated heh.

Though I want Bert back too. You're not getting a better player for his salary. And at least with him....you already know EXACTLY what to expect. Dumb penalties, a lot of unfinished checks, but maybe 20 goals a season (Maybe more, didn't help that we had 12 injuries all year long), and a really good, or fairly bad playoff performer depending on the alignment of the stars that particular night.
