I don't agree with that.

I think that they could contend for the cup.

They weren't even close to win against the sharks (yeah 1 goal games but they failed in the essential parts of the game) they wouldn't have a chance against the hawks, and they would have more problem against the nucks than the yotes... if you can't win against sharks, hawks, nucks.. it's a failure.

IF Lids re-signed for 7M then this is roughly what the roster looks like.

- with Homer getting a slight raise

- with Janik or someone at league minimum as the 7th D-man

- with slight raises for Eaves, Abby, and Helm

- with Miller released

- with Ritola as the 13th forward

Either Holland makes a trade, or he's banking on that 2M cap increase.

Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m)

Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Daniel Cleary ($2.800m)

* Tomas Holmstrom ($2.500m) / Kris Draper ($1.583m) / * Todd Bertuzzi ($1.500m)

* Justin Abdelkader ($0.900m) / * Darren Helm ($0.800m) / * Patrick Eaves ($0.700m)

Mattias Ritola ($0.517m)

DEFENSEMEN

* Nicklas Lidstrom ($7.000m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m)

Brad Stuart ($3.750m) / Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m)

Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) / Jakub Kindl ($0.883m)

* Doug Janik ($0.500m)

GOALTENDERS

Chris Osgood ($1.417m) / Jimmy Howard ($0.717m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS

(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)

ROSTER: 22; CAP: $56.8m; PAYROLL: $58.080m; CAP ROOM: $-1.280m

I was referring to if the contract is 7 million. Amazing defenseman or not, at his age, does he really deserve to be making a million + more than Green, Pronger and Boyle?

Chris Pronger makes 7.6 million dollars next year.

The only reason his cap hit is lower is because of length of contract.

Lidstrom cannot guarantee that he will play after next season and at his age retirement doesn't take the cap hit off...

He couldn't sign for more than the year he will play.

He will make less than Pronger.

Yeah, that almost identical roster certainly sucked in 2008. :lol:

Err...Drake, Samuelsson... and osgood who could stop pucks...

Don't underestimate what they did that year.

(Those two are gone, osgood won't bounce back in this final year in a wings jersey)

Because they will be forced to put the same team on the ice as last season (+hudler) and that FOR SURE won't be enough for a championship season.

Keep in mind that the plethora of rookies will now have a year of experience under their belts. Ericcson, Helm, and Howard should (theoretically) all be more reliable on the ice, and we'll also have Abby the whole year instead of Williams. And don't underestimate what adding Hudler can do to the team. Especially if Babs wants to roll three "scoring lines". Its not the top six that wins a playoff series, but the bottom six. Next year we may also have a bit of money at the deadline to pick up someone who can add a bit of depth.

Don't count next year as a lost cause before this year's playoffs are even over.

They weren't banged up in the playoffs...

it sure woulda helped to get nashville first round instead of a 7 game series on the other side of the world...look what happened to montreal, they took down 2 monsters then couldnt handle a good at best flyers team.

Pronger and Keith are in the category as lidstrom, keith is 27 and will win the norris this year, he has a 5.5m caphit, pronger's caphit is 4.9m next season at age 36... It's very fair to say they are atleast equally good, probably better, and they make less than lidstrom.. therefore i can't be happy about a 6m caphit, the team wont be able to sign a third liner, at best a 850k fourth liner or something,

Both Keith and Pronger were signed to long term contracts so as to minimize the AVERAGE cap hit. Pronger's salary for next year in $7.6M, Keith will make $8M next year. Lids was signed for 1 year.

Your post is just plain wrong.

Actually I do think the Red Wings have enough talent for a championship. Kronwall will need to take a big leap and hopefully our roster can stay healthier. Red Wings showed that they can still be dominate when healthy(key word). I really think we have better odds if we just make small editions rather then completely turning over the roster and essentially guess that Babcock can create chemistry with free agents( which doesn't usually pan out).

Stand corrected, they're hits are higher than I thought.

Show me that clause.

Restricted Free Agents: A player set to become a restricted will become an unrestricted free agent if his current team does not make him a qualifying offer that adheres to the minimum raise policy of the CBA. The deadline to qualify all RFA's is June 29

* Qualifying Offers: A qualifying offer must include the following minimum raises:

o Previous salary < $660,000: 10% increase in salary

o Previous salary < $1,000,000: 5% increase in salary

o Previous salary > $1,000,000: Match previous season's salary

Then why bother watching? It's done - RIP 2011 Detroit Red Wings.

Howard has proved capable, Sammy was a solid role-player and not too much more and Holland is looking to add a Drake-type player to the fold. No one's underestimating what those guys did. You're just not factoring into the mix what they'll have next year to replace them.

As a fan I can understand that but it doesn't work that way in a negotiation...

Would you rather Lidstrom sign a 2 year contract to reduce the cap hit...then decide he wants to retire next year and have a cap hit for him in 2 years when he isn't playing???

To a GM and fans the caphit is all that matters, lidstrom should be honest with himself "gee I'm not better than some of the D's in this league maybe i should help my own team as much as they have helpted theirs by getting a low CAPHIT contract for this (probable)final year as i've already made 80million dollars or whatnot in my carrer"

Eh? I was under the assumption cap hits don't apply to a team once the player retires?

I'm really excited Lidstrom decided to come back. Not only does it bode well for the team, as one of the top defensemen in the league is returning, but it says a lot about the confidence Lidstrom has in this team going into next year. Why would Lidstrom return if he didn't think we could ice a better team next year? Why would he return if he didn't think he could add another accomplishment to his long list of achievements (hinting at his comment at the end of the season)? As a fan, that has to be reassuring.

EDIT: Do any of you actually think Keith or Pronger would be making those salaries if they had signed a 1-year deal? The reason their cap-hits are so low is because they were signed to long term contracts, not because that's all they were worth.

I appreciate the research!

mindfly: We're talking a minimum required increase for all four of those players (Abdelkader, Helm, Miller & Eaves) *combined* of only $204,944.40. Not even a quarter million....total!

Yeah I admit that appears not to be much, and they probably won't get any offers from other teams'... Still I wanted ken holland to go for a solid 2.5-3M third liner...all in vain now with lidstrom's 7Million contract, though.

Once again, says the guy who's money this isn't.

Fair enough, but (1) I'm not sure a $2.5-$3 million third liner was officially in Kenny's plan to begin with, and (2) it's not completely out the window this year given the uncertainty in the bottom-6, not to mention the trade deadline.

If they sign the contract before the age of 35.

Any multi-year deal signed after the age of 35 the cap hit cannot be relieved by waiving a player or by retirement.

That is why Hatcher and Rathje stayed on the Flyers roster for years on the LTIR.
