Riley Sheahan to Detroit at 21?

Never posted a draft link before, so apologies in advance if this is in the wrong spot ...

FanHouse has Detroit taking Riley Sheahan, Notre Dame center in the first round of the draft ... saw him a lot during CCHA action. Sounds like he's really strong defensively but a bit offensively challenged at the moment. Anyone else have any insights?

They'll trade out of the first and get 3 2nd round picks or something and draft 3 quality prospects instead of one that will probably bust.

That would be totally lame, they haven't had a high pick like this since 2005.. USE IT.

Please god no. I hate Notre Dame, its bad enough we signed Jordan Pearce. I think I would rather we take a defenseman in the first round unless the brass thinks one of the forwards left on the board has absolutely huge potential and I just don't think this guy does. 4 goals in 28 games in the CCHA is not impressive even if he was a freshman and a two way forward. Frankly I can't believe this guy is projected to go in the first round, I don't think I would even want us taking him in the 2nd if he was available...

I've got to side with Mindfly here. If anything I think the Wings should think about trading up right now.

Since 2001 the Wings' highest pick was Kindl at 19th overall.

Now we've got 21st. It'd be nice to see if anyone is willing to drop down a bit. If the following guys fall around to 14ish I'd be interested in moving up to get them:

--Niederreiter

--Watson

--McFarland (definitely a gamble but at one point he was considered the best Canadian kid in this draft year... yes he was ranked above Hall by some scouts only a few years ago) He was injured for a large chunk of this year and that really hurt his stock.

I'm not a pro scout, nor am I privy to the line of thinking in the Wings' head office, so really I'm just fantasizing about having a pick in the low teens for once.

In the end the Wings likely have a handful of kids they've targeted and a 'wishlist' they'd like to go after. Who knows what Holland will do. I'm not counting on him trading out of the 1st just because he's done it before... the Wings core is getting older and we need more blue chippers in the prospect pool.

Here's the scouting report on Watson (a 6'3", 185lb Michigan boy!):

NHL Central Scouting’s Chris Edwards

“Austin is a very good penalty killer. He plays a high-energy two-way game. He's aggressive on the forecheck and he will finish his checks. He has good hands and can shoot the puck hard. He is an excellent competitor and is a good shot blocker. I like his energy and willingness to play a role and be good at that role.”

Peterborough Petes head coach Ken McRae

“Austin is a big power forward that protects the puck very well all over the ice. He is a great shot blocker and penalty kill specialist. Austin also exhibits a great net front presence on the power-play and even strength and has a very good stick allowing him to create goals and scoring chances off redirections and tips. He also displays good leadership qualities for such a young player.”

He doesn't have that top end offensive game but he does have the kind of Filppula-like potential to contribute in every aspect of the game (but he also checks really well, which Val can't really do all that effectively at his size).

I think Watson is a safe pick... he doesn't have the offensive potential of a guy like Niederreiter but he has the potential to be a big bruising forward who kills penalties, can play the PP as a screen, wears down the opposing defense on the forecheck and is a leader off the ice.

I'm still high on Niederreiter but that might be because he's got the potential to use every single spare R in the team seamstress's stock. That or his impressive international play.

With Larsson leaving, I think there's a good chance they go after Pickard. None of the players likely to be available sound all that impressive, honestly. Some decent potential in some, but it sure doesn't sound like there's going to be a future top 6 there. Trading down is another good possibility I think.

Trading up I would seriously doubt. There's just not enough players to trade up for, so the cost to get one of them would likely be too high.

I know next to nothing about most of the Euros this year. Usually that means they aren't that good, but who knows.

The emergence of Howard made Larsson a spare part (he's only 2 years younger)... it's too bad because he had the inside track on the backup (and still could have it... after all he could still get signed).

I'd rather go after forwards since they have a 20 year old 1st round goalie in the AHL right now. A lower round goalie would be smart, though.
