I'm saying Mcilrath. He is projected to go right around where we pick, he fills a serious need in our system and Kenny had him on that list earlier this year.

agreed. he could play on a line with adam almqvist in a couple years. 5"10 meet 6"5...your new D partner. :yowza: that would be cool to have brendan smith, adam almqvist and dylan mcilrath up around the same time.

that kid's already like 235 pounds too i think at 17 years old!

I love how we're already wondering who will get to be his D partner already. I think he could be a good stay-at-home type partner for Kronwall in about four years, allowing Kronner to take more chances with hitting and joining the rush.

I think Etem could be a sexy pick, someone who could join the top six before too long. I get a good 35-goal vibe out of this kid.

Even if he fell low enough, Pittsburgh would pick him just before us out of spite. Assholes

This is another reason Crosby sucks.

Hence the reason we trade up to guarantee our pick. If Holland really wants him that is. I just hope that whoever he picks, it's someone 6' or higher and 215lbs or more. I personally am tired of the small skilled players, or the 6 footers that weigh 180lbs and cannot throw the body... but, eh, that's just me!

Call me crazy but I have this weird feeling that Kabanov is worth a shot. It's high risk, but the reward would be great. If Mcilrath is picked before us I wouldn't hate this one bit.

6'3" 176lbs? Plus the injuries? No Thank You.....

2009-10: This season has been one of controversy and injury for Kabanov. The talented forward was suspended prior to the season for not signing a contract with his new club, Salavat Yuleav Ufa. Kabanov's North American rights were held by the Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL, which he joined in October. Due to injuries, however, Kabanov appeared in just 22 games for the Wildcats, scoring 10 goals and adding 13 assists for 23 points in those games. But Kabanov was given his release from the Wildcats after being a healthy scratch in some late regular season games and the first round of the playoffs. Kabanov missed out on playing in the World Junior Championships due to an injury, and was not added to the World Under-18 roster.

These are kids we're talking about. McIlrath was one of the biggest at the combine and he's 212. 18 year-old hockey players over 200 lbs are rare. 180 really isn't small. 6'1+, 190+ is a more realistic range for a 'big' player.

Kabanov will be another Zherdev. Zherdev went ahead of guys like Mike Richards, Corey Perry, Ryan Kesler.

He's a stuck up russian player with skill that has his head to far up his ass to be a good player.

McIlrath does fill a need, but not likely for at least 1 or 2 years (if he continues to develop at a good pace). He's not someone that looks to be NHL ready right away. If it wasn't for the fighting, I doubt anyone here would be excited by him at all.

Furthermore, players like him can usually be added via free agency at a moderate price. And with that, you'd also get a proven commodity. Even top draft picks aren't sure things. Late first-rounders never are.

I wouldn't hate it if we got him, but it wouldn't excite me either. But really, no one we're liable to get this draft is going to excite me, unless by chance we can pickup Kabanov in the 2nd round.

HF Boards Thread

After reading the last 3ish pages of this thread I dont dislike Kabanov as much.

Here is a quoted post from someone on that site.

Coming into the Combine, Atlanta GM Rick Dudley, said, "If [Kiril Kabanov] comes in and there's a certain level of humility and you get the sincerity in the player and a commitment to play in whatever league he's asked to play in by his National Hockey League team, that means something."

NHL

Kiril Kabanov's remarks to the media after physical testing at the NHL Combine. You be the judge. To my ears, Kiril's sincere:

Oilers.nhl.tv

“It was my mistake,” Kabanov admitted when asked about Moncton. “I was stupid and I recognize that now.”

"I just wanted to explain to them (NHL GMs) what I did wrong this season," he said of his motivation going into the combine. "Smart people learn from other people's mistakes and stupid people learn from their own mistakes ... I was kind of a stupid guy. But everything happens for a reason."

Yahoo Sports

“I want to be a star, I want to play in the NHL,” he said. “Next year I'll play wherever my NHL team tells me. CHL, AHL, I don't care.”

The Hockey News

Later he turned on the charm offensive and Kiril, understandably, had nothing nice to say about the KHL who had targeted him with threats and strong arm tactics.

“I played one year in the KHL, then I came to the Quebec League,” he said. “And the hotels were better in the Quebec League!”

Kabanov was asked if he had any advice for younger Russian prospects.

"Run," he said. "Run to North America."

The Hockey News

Why did JP Barry, agent to the stars, walk away from a high profile client and presumably a handsome commission check? I don't think it had anything to do with Kiril's charm offensive at the Combine.

I'm guessing it was too much of a hassle dealing with Kiril and his father, Sergei Kabanov, a wealthy businessman and former Russian Army boxing champion.

Sergei Kabanov

(Source: http://hockey-observer.blogspot.com/...s-pity-we.html)

What the Kabanovs fail to understand is that Kiril's draft bid was much more attractive when it meant NHL GMs were dealing with JP Barry. Now that they're back to dealing with father and son, I doubt he goes in the first round.

After reading the statements he made at the combine and such it seems like he wants to get everything back on track and is pretty dedicated to playing in the NHL someday. It all seemed pretty sincere anyways.

Kabanov does not have injury problems. He had a fluke injury that was his wrist and he is fully recovered. Also, the kid is 17. If he can play that well at 176 imagine how he does when he fills out. Its not exactly a bad thing when players do well when they still have not filled out or are still not very strong. It means there is generally more upside than guys that are already filled out. When drafting players weight should not be considered too much of an issue.

I didn't pick any of those options as Holland will probably trade the pick for multiple picks.

I don't get why people think this is so likely right now. Holland's done that when his picks were very low. This pick is among the highest picks they've had since 1991. If anything I'd think Holland might trade up before he trades down. If he does trade down I doubt it will be to the 2nd round.

Last year's pick was 8 spots after this one and he only traded 2 spots down.

Red Line Report's Mike Remmerde talks McIlrath here:

http://nhldraftnotes.blogspot.com/2010/06/dylan-mcilrath-rd-moose-jaw-whl.html

...

Draft Day: I love this guy and I think he'll surprise on draft day. Scouts who have seen a lot of him understand he's got a more well-rounded game than he gets credit for. If I was picking in the 8-15 range, I'd really argue for this guy. (I'd slot him ahead of Connolly if my team medical specialists expressed any concern about Connolly's hips.) Somewhere in the 15-25 range seems most likely, and I can't imagine him dropping much further than that.

As I indicated a month or so ago, I think it would take a miracle for him to drop to 21 and I'm not sure I want any prospects from the list to be headed off the other direction to trade up.

I agree I think it is highly unlikely that McIlrath drops low enough for the Wings to be able to pick him up but voted for him anyway in the hopes that I am wrong.
