cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted June 3, 2010 From Toronto Star : Canadian Tire Corp. is making a bold play for a piece of Canada’s hockey heritage. The retailer says it’s entering the auction to repatriate the jersey Paul Henderson wore when he scored the series-clinching goal in the 1972 Canada-Soviet hockey series. To prove it’s serious. Canadian Tire says its opening bid for what it called a Canadian “icon” is $200,000. That’s well above the current $144,000 offer on the table. But there was still 20 days to go in the auction as of Wednesday. It ends June 22. ... Classic Auctions .

cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted June 5, 2010 From Toronto Star : ...If the famous, and now famously expensive, Paul Henderson Team Canada ’72 hockey jersey ends up in Canada, at least it won’t be travellng store-to-store for Canadian Tire. Recognizing that a museum-quality item requires a controlled environment and shouldn’t be journeying for commercial purposes, Canadian Tire is dropping out of the chase for the great Canadian sporting icon, currently priced at $211,000 with 17 days left on the auction for its U.S. owner. It would make an outstanding centrepiece exhibit for the new Canadian Sports Hall of Fame when it opens next June in Calgary. Molson Canadian, backed by the Forzani Group, is rustling up support, including financial, to send the jersey to the new Hall. Henderson, who is ill with leukemia but who looked pretty good this week at the Hall’s annual golf tournament, endorses the idea of anchoring it in Calgary. Henderson has set up a meeting with the yet unnamed owner for next week to emphasize that point. ...

cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted June 24, 2010 From Toronto Star : ...Goldhar is planning a repatriation tour for the jersey. He wants to take it “from coast to coast” making stops at community centres, museums and malls with the 67-year-old Henderson in tow as much as his health will allow. Goldhar said the venture has nothing to do with business or profit. He just wants as many Canadians as possible to get up close to the sweater and “connect again” with a great unifying moment in our history. ...
