king_malice 17 Report post Posted June 9, 2010 BROOKLYN, Mich. - Detroit Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom will get behind the wheel this weekend to serve as the honorary pace car driver at a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. The 40-year-old defenceman, who put off retirement by signing a one-year contract with the NHL team earlier this month, will also participate in some of the pre-race ceremonies at the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400. It will be his first visit to Michigan International Speedway. Detroit Lions first-round draft pick Ndamukong Suh will serve as an honorary official for the race, which has a 43-car field. "We are pleased Nicklas Lidstrom and Ndamukong Suh will be here on Sunday for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400," track president Roger Curtis said in a release. "Lidstrom is a household name in Detroit and I have a good feeling that Suh will be making quite a name for himself in Detroit as well when the football season begins this fall." 1 Zeowingsfan reacted to this

puckloo39 5,686 Report post Posted June 9, 2010 Good thing Suh is an "official" - not sure he'd fit inside the car. Lions were very lucky to get this young man in the draft. Go, Nick!! 1 Rivalred reacted to this
MulesWillFly93 199 Report post Posted June 9, 2010 Cool! I have, well, ok, a little shame in admitting I'm a NASCAR fan, but anyway, I'll definitely be watching this weekend. Just don't get a flat, Nick, and you'll be fine (that actually happened a couple of weeks ago, hehe).

WMUCarGuy 8 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 He drove the pace car for the American Le Mans Series race at Belle Isle a few years ago too.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 Not even for Nick would I turn on a NASCAR race. Ditto, unfortunately. I tried to watch NASCAR once a few years ago when my brother-in-law had it on. Just didn't do a single thing for me, but I gave it a shot. I figure I get to see enough ridiculous driving during my morning commute anyway.

commadore183 103 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 As an avid motorsports fan, I'll be definitely tuned in to see this. This isn't the first time Lidstrom has appeared at a motorsports event. He was the grand marshall when the IndyCar Series made a stop at the Belle Isle temporary street circuit in 2008 (I believe). I think Kris Draper was also in attendence to that event as well. He could be the honorary pace car driver for the IZOD IndyCar Series, as they go at speeds over 100 MPH (160 km/h) before they let them go, where as the NASCAR pace cars (or safety cars as they are also called) generally go between 35 and 65 MPH (they run those speeds because NASCAR stock cars don't have speedometers to keep track of pit road speed, so they use the tachometer while behind the pace car on the parade laps to determine the pit road speed, where as the IndyCar has electronic pit road speed limiters that are automatically programmed to the pit lane speed, all by pushing or holding a button). There are different kinds of motorsports out there other than NASCAR. There's IndyCar, drag racing, Le Mans-style sports car racing, motorcycle racing, etc, so there's got to be something for everyone. Of course, I'll watch them all (Hell, I've even watched lawn mower racing before). The IndyCar series did a great race at Texas Motor Speedway last week (despite the flustercuck of a safety response to a fire).
