Toews: Most undeserving Conn Smyth winner in history?

The guy piles up secondary assists on his way to the finals, mails it in on the biggest stage and is awarded the Conn Smythe? I think, more than anything, this speaks to Chicago's depth. Personally, I think Niemi was more valuable to his team throughout the playoffs but it could have also gone to Duncan Keith or Patrick Kane as well. Gigure was a product of his pads and his defense in 06-07.

I like him, and he was great against Vancouver, but yes. Easily the most undeserving. 3 assists and -5 in the Finals, please. Should've been Duncan Teeth, he was their best player IMO.

So, you bash Toews for "mailing it in" in the Finals while meanwhile, Niemi was absolute GARBAGE in the finals with a 4+ GAA and a SV% under .900? Curious.

Toews was the heart and soul of that team and he deserved the Conn Smythe.

Yep, Wings fans are going to have to be very careful - the Blackhawks are officially better than us now. We'd better suck it up and act like a man about it (except for the women) instead of being whiny petulant children.

Nah! Most Undeserving?! I think he deserved it, sure he didn't put up huge numbers in the Finals, but the Conn Smythe goes to the best player in the playoffs and there was no one better than Toews. The kid was awesome in the faceoff dot and that stat alone is the most underrated stat in the game. I personally thought that if Toews didn't get the award that maybe Leino would get it!

I think the Conn Smythe is usually pretty spot on when it comes to selecting the winners. Malkin totally deserved it last year, he kicked our butts!

Toews has never broken the 70pt mark in the NHL.

Not once.

54pts as a rookie. 69pts last year and 68pts this year.

He has 191pts in 222 games.

Toews is highly unlikely to come close to Yzerman's legacy. Guess how many people in NHL history have scored more points in one season than Yzerman? 2. Gretzky and Lemieux.

Think about that. Yzerman didn't phone it in on his way to 6th all time in points.

I'm not worried about Yzerman's legacy-- he's already cemented his place in NHL history. No one else can change that-- the record books have been written. His excellence is well documented. When Gretzky beat out Howe's NHL records (note that no one has beaten his records for most goals scored in professional hockey-- NHL and WHL combined) it didn't change Howe's legacy.

You can debate this s*** til next years winner is crowned! Toews played decent, I figured Buff or Keith would get it. But if you want to break it down with points and all, Briere should have won it.

As far as previous winners in the past 20 years (since Lemieux in 1991) who IMHO weren't necessarily the 'real' MVP, I place the guys who I didn't consider locks in terms of who deserved it in this order:

1995 Lemieux; should have been Brodeur

1997 Vernon; should have been Yzerman

2001 Roy; should have been Sakic

2009 Malkin; arguable for Osgood or Zetterberg

1993 Roy; arguable for Damphousse or Desjardins

1998 Yzerman; arguable for Fedorov or Osgood

Toews was basically a lock; tied Savard's points record for the Hawks, played solid D, great on faceoffs, took the other teams' top D unit every game. Team captain and acted like it. Kane was totally inconsistent, Niemi was up and down, Keith was the only other Hawks player with a chance. Pronger was the Flyers' best bet and in the most important game of the series he was their worst player. That means it was Toews, Keith, or Pronger.

So that cuts the success rate to between to 68.4% and 84.2% ; that's a pretty good success rate with that one compared to the other awards IMHO.

The Norris trophy will have either a 52.6% or a 57.9% accuracy rate IMHO since 1991 after it is awarded this year. Accuracy of 63.2% or 68.4% for the Hart. The Vezina will be at 68.4% or 73.7%, and the Selke at 63.2% or 68.4%. So only the Vezina is close to to the Conn Smythe in terms of accuracy as to who they "should" be awarded to, likely due to the fact they are restricted to only choosing the MVP from two teams rather than 30. Unless you think all of the guys I listed as 'wrong are wrong, and all of the 'correct' winners win, in which case the Hart and Selke will match the Smythe's success rate.

Im 99% sure that the crappy announcers for NBC commented on Toews and his subpar numbers for the playoffs, referencing how he needed to "Get in there more" and "Get more involved." LOL....29 points which ties a franchise record with Savard.....NBC really knows their stuff.

Niemi comes to mind, but his numbers were pretty bad considering they won.....if you saw it years from now, there's no way you think it was Cup quality.
