Yeah got forbid someone wants a player that can score over 20 goals at like the age of 22 and also can hit and fight well. That would be horrible for this team.

I don't talk up NA players, i talk up tyough players. This team needs some hard hitters and some tougher players tyo really be the best ethy can br. Its just more often then not the tuogher guys available are Na players. Sorry that I wanna see some grit on this team, I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat,.

Agreed, but a tough 20 goal-scorer also cost 2 to 4 times as much as a wimpy one.

Surely you can see this team has a bit of a cap constraint, and at the end of the day 20 goals is 20 goals.

He hit the nail on the head there. Filppula is as good as his confidence will take him. That goal he scored from the outside of the circles last year against the coyotes last year is a perfect example of that.

No, your not alone on this. I fully agree with you and I do talk up North American and more importantly Canadian players. I'm Canadian and I Love the way we play the game and I miss having good Canadian players in the mix on our team. I don't hate euro's but for the most part they do play a different style then NA players. My opinion is that we need a better mix! A better mix will give us a more exciting product on the ice... we haven't had what I am looking for since losing Yzerman, Shannahan, Old Mac, a Prime Grind Line. I'd rather see moves made to bring in a Carcillo or Asham rather then sign an unknown Filpula especially since i am not satisfied yet with the current Filpula.

Totally, have been in this camp for years despite the success. The Flip was a big flop in the S.J series ; no grit injury or not. I believe his no show along with the crappy goaltending did us in. Grinders, in Detroit has become a remote dream. Imagine were wondering abou the fate of Abdelkader - oh no another Knuble gone. Were far of course - I'll take a guy from PEI any day over ...

What are the realistic chances of him playing with the big club with the wings being so deep at forward and with some many good forwards in GR that could use their NHL cherry busted when injuries do occur?

Very slim i'd say, detroit's system is all about having wheels, and Ilari must improve his speed and overall skating ability to even have a chance. SM-Liiga is alot different than NHL

The odds of him getting on the team are pretty slim. Talking about something hockey-related in the offseason that hasn't been hashed and rehashed is what is keeping this thread going.

That said, if he comes along and puts all of his competition to shame, I'll be the last to complain. I can dig it when anyone comes along and shines surprisingly bright for Detroit.

If he does make it, I hope we can trade for Selanne so we can find out what the Finnish translation is for "two kids and a goat".

I really hope the Val Filppula line does well. Amongst all four it seems like that's the one with the most question marks. His brother said it best, "More courage". To me that means Filppula shows that he wants to own the puck and be the firm decision maker for that line. It's great to watch him so confident without the puck. Now I'd really like to see him a lot more confident WITH the puck.

for the people complaining about toughness. looks at how the wings are drafting the last few years. I know its tough right now but we will have our big, skilled, tough team in a few years time. Just be patient. you have put up with one of the softest teams this long, whats another couple years?

VFlip has stated that Iflip needs seasoning in GR. zero chance he makes the team. if he does well maybe an injury call up. if not it will be back to europe.

yeah he's flips bro but hardly anything to get excited over.

iFlip should be called Goldfish for now on lol.

The Detroit Red Wings today assigned eight players to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League and released two players from their professional tryouts. With the moves, Detroit’s training camp roster currently stands at 40 players.

Those headed to Grand Rapids are forwards Willie Coetzee, Ilari Filppula and Jamie Tardif, defensemen Travis Ehrhardt, Sergei Kolosov, Sebastien Piche and Logan Pyett and goalie Thomas McCollum.

I don't get it, why gold fish?

Watch the video. When vFlip was asked what sea creature iFlip most resembled, he said "I dunno, something that everyone loves and that everyone could get along with, how bout' a Gold Fish" in which iFlip responded "Valtteri would be most like a shark, but not as mean, probably a dolphin"

Just realized that I like this signing for another reason. Ilari has a chance to be a decent prospect but also I like how he can provide somewhat of a "mentor" presence for Val. It seems like no one else knows Val's struggle with confidence and "courage" as he put it than his older brother Ilari. He can be there to encourage him and push him at the same time, which is a kind of quality influence that is much more salient when it comes from an older brother, especially when they're as close as they are.

Shhh don't say that!!!!!! Remember, it sparked a huge flamefest earlier!!!!

iFlip looked awesome in the preseason, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had near a PPG in the AHL this season.

He just seems like a really nice guy and plays a smart great game of hockey. I hope to see him, Mursak, and Emmerton next season for the Wings full time. He's paid his dues over in Finland, seems to be a real professional team player, and is having no issues adjusting to the North American game.
