noone else is on the move wings fans. Sharp is staying... HUet will be bought out or buried in the minors. The Hawks are in the Clear. They may have to dump versteeg, but thats it. What a steal!!!!

Yeah-- assuming you ignore math that makes sense.

This move was a tour de force by Hawks management; an unqualified success no matter how other fans try to spin it. They cleared $4 million+ in cap space, making room for the current roster, providing protection against un-matchable offer-sheets to Niemi and Hjalmarsson as well as qualifying space for Ladd who would otherwise be a UFA, and they dealt three guys they couldn't afford to keep in the first place. They gained a first round pick for Buff despite everyone saying this was impossible, upgraded prospects by getting Morin, and got a younger cheaper replacement for the departing Madden. Of course this move weakens them slightly, but it is a far cry from the hilarious predictions of Hawks' management begging in the streets for other teams to take players off their hands.

This move gives them a huge amount of breathing room and most people, myself included, think they won on value alone not even considering salary cap implications. All in all, a flawless victory for the Blackhawks.

I don't necessarily disagree with most of your post, Atlanta did get hosed, but honestly I don't see how it's really Chicago's wonderfulness that made it happen. Every team will always start the bargaining high, its Atlanta's fault that they were stupid and paid too much, rather than an awesome tactic from Chicago's side.

This deal was a complete shocker to me. I didn't detect a hint of Chicago wanting to move Bufyglien. I guess Chicago figured his value would never be higher than right after a Cup win.

Same here, he was instrumental to their cup run and this one REALLY caught me by surprise...

It's not so much Atlanta getting hosed as it is the Hawks extracting the maximum value from this deal. Frankly, I think it will be helpful to the Thrashers over the short term. Either way I give the Hawks management credit for getting the deal done, especially given that so many people thought something like this was literally impossible, given the Hawks' cap situation/desperation. If nothing else, give them credit for identifying and taking advantage of a mark.

Woah. Chicago fans showing up in the offseason to talk about how amazing their team is... no wai!

Hawks mngment duh best + kane n tayves best playerz evuh!!!!

HAWKS ROOOL

LOL DETROIT SUCKS LOL

All kidding a side, I think it's a good deal for both sides. I think it's great to see Atlanta trying to build a team without it being center pieced around one or two elite players with a bunch of random garbage. It's a steep price but it's good to see a southern market making a real effort.

If they can manage to hang onto to their key free agents they'll have a half decent looking team. Especially if Brian Little(30 goal scorer) can bounce back and they get some progression out of their young players.

Evander Kane - Nik Antropov - Maxim Afinogenov(or FA)

Dustin Byfuglien - Rich Peverly - Brian Little

Clarke MacArthur - Todd White - Niclas Bergfors

Ben Eager - Jim Slater - F/A

Pavel Kubina - Tobias Enstrom

Ron Hainsey - Zach Bogosian

Johnny Oduya - Brent Sopel

Borris Valabik

Ondrej Pavalec

Johan Hedberg

They could ice this roster and still have like 17 million in cap space to improve anywhere they see fit. They're in pretty good shape if you ask me.

Lol. I'm sure their internal cap is significantly lower but they still have plenty of room to pick up another forward or two. Not a high end forward mind you but another solid addition nevertheless.

They were willing to spend on him but he didn't want to play in Atlanta.

In all seriousness, I can't see them making a run at any high end players, maybe try and re-sign Kozlov and Armstrong and make a run at another mid-end guy like Torres, Stempniak or Lehtinen... that alone would take up another 7-10 million, couple that with rounding out the roster with their RFA's and they'd still probably be 10 million or so below the cap and with a pretty decent roster at that...

the Thrashers should toss a few of those extra dollas at Nabokov. that would make them all around not that bad...it would at least give them the best goaltending that the franchise has ever had.

With all due respect (and remember that I said with all due respect) - that is one of the single worst ideas I have ever heard of in the history of hockey... we are all less intelligent for having heard it!

haha, ok, that was a little bit of an exaggeration, but seriously, why would they want him? They have Pavelec and Hedberg already that they need to re-sign and both of them are VERY good, YOUNG goalies... if anything, I would think they'd rather roll with these two for a lot less money and with more upside...

No, I agree. They aren't going to go get guys like Frolov or Marleau but I could see them picking up somebody like Ponikarovsky. Probably a second line forward of some kind that's in the 20 goal to 40 or 45 point range. They've got solid young talent and pretty respectable defensive core so there's not much to address there.

I think Ponikarovsky thinks he's worth more than he is and could even end up KHL bound if someone in the NHL doesn't give him north of 3mil a year, which I don't think anyone will with the abysmal post-season he had...

Entirely possible. The Trashers definitely have the advantage of having a surplus of prospects where they can make some deals and not be hurt too bad. I'm kind of curious to see if they have any more trades in the works.

It will take years before they get returns of those picks and its unlikely that they will be as good as the players that they are trading for them. In the mean time they will have to plug those holes left by their lost depth/role players with low paid scrubs.

They can wait years for return on those picks...they aren't where next years players are coming from. I don't understand why so many people are assuming the hawks will have to fill their roster with scrubs.

Yea, lets ignore the fact that Kopecky is still under contract and that you can't just "get rid of" Huet's contract, not to mention that even in this magical world of make believe where this is possible, the team is CONSIDERABLY weaker...

Where did Huet go?

The AHL? Trade?

If Kopecky goes won't Hossa pitch a fit?

OK ok the last one was a joke but the first two, where does the HUGE contract for Huet go?

It's 4 million in bonuses, but even then that roster does fit under the cap. Where did Huet go though, trade, AHL?

AHL..Europe...bye. I don't think the Hawks have a problem paying him what they owe him. They just can't afford it on the cap. Even if they don't move Kopecky they will some similar salary. Yes, they will be weaker at the beginning of the season but who knows.. Beach and Skille were 1st round picks. Dowell and Bickel have played well when they have played for the Hawks. The Hawks like Lalonde...it might work out. It certainly isn't the doom and gloom hoped for by some.

Fraser who was do an increase on your roster is now gone, 700k freed up, but yet another player they need to fill their roster spot.

Also if the Wings 3rd and 4th lines looked like that as well as the 3rd pairing most of this board would s*** their collective pants, juicy, runny, smelly, hungover mudbutt s***s at that!
