mjlegend 155 Report post Posted June 24, 2010 As Red Wing fans, we're not used to paying guys like Pavelski beacuse he's relatively young while being a good fit on any of their top six, He had 59 points two years ago and 51 (in 67 games) last year. He's 26 and certainly not on the downswing. My thought as well was that with these deals, Thornton might be gone as soon as the summer, to try to get a starting goalie with a slightly smaller cap hit. They can't honestly be thiking Turco or Emery or (insert mediocre starter here) will be good enough when the chips are down. I would think there is still an interested market for a 6'5" first line centre who gets 90-100 points a year, even if he doesn't give a s*** in the playoffs. sharkfan20 32 Report post Posted June 25, 2010 Good signing. It might be a little high for Marleau, but he would have gotten over payed somewhere else like the flames or kings. If we would to lose Nabokov, we aren't going to lose on Marleau. Pavs; a great signing. HE played good for us in the playoffs, he saved the Sharks asses in round 1. We need to resign Nichol, Maholtra and Seto now. And Sign a D-men or trade for one. I expect Murray or Clowe to be tradebait to someone.

13dangledangle 965 Report post Posted June 25, 2010 Wait, why did San Jose take the "C" away from him last year, then resign him for this deal now? Not to mention there now "C" less and need one so does he get it? Thats weird to me.
Zion 93 Report post Posted June 25, 2010 I can't believe some of the idiotic things I'm reading on this thread. Pavelski: great player, worth $4 million Marleau: outstanding player, would make $7 on the open market, so this is a higher signing than I thought, and certainly takes the Sharks out of Niemi range. Thornton won't be traded, but when he coasts through another playoff this year, he won't be re-signed and will end up in Atlanta. 1 Uncle Danny reacted to this

Not to mention there now "C" less and need one so does he get it? Thats weird to me. McLellan took away everyone's letters, not just Marleau's. It wasn't a reflection of his captaincy ability per se, rather a coach wanting his captain to be the team's leader. Marleau did wear an 'A' this past season and is probably the most likely candidate to receive the 'C' as he has the respect of his teammates and is a leader on the team. Blake got the 'C' last season because he was a veteran leader with Cup experience. Now Blake is gone, and Marleau is the team's leader. He gets the 'C' back. Honestly? It would have been better IMO for team morale to decide on who were going to get the letters, and once Marleau was among them, for Blake to have just received an 'A' as he would have been able to talk with refs and such when necessary, but there wouldn't be any "Why did San Jose strip Marleau of the 'C' " questions. chrisdetroit 189 Report post Posted June 25, 2010 Once upon a time the Sharks were trying to unload him, but that was before Todd McClellan showed up. Since he took over as coach and installed that new system, Marleau has arguably been their best player. I think this signing means that Thornton is either on the trading block or they won't resign him after this year. Really? Last year, he was the captain and he had 3 points in 6 playoff games and had a +/- of even. He always good in the regular season but until this year he was not good in the playoffs. See Marian Hossa... so let me get this straight. Pavelski had 4 or 5 really good games in the playoffs and gets 4 mill a year. if I were a sharks fan I would be a bit upset. Imagine if the wings gave franzen the contract he has now right after the Colorado series. I understand that the mule had another year left in his contract and was able to show he was not a one hit wonder. The sharks better hope pavelski works out like they are hoping or this will be a very horrible cap eating contract 2 years from now Well said. This happens every year. 1 good playoff and everybody thinks the guy is great in the playoffs. Examples: Hosssa, Khabibulin, Buffy, Niemi

Guest GordieSid&Ted Report post Posted June 26, 2010 I don't mind the Marleu signing at all. All the dude does is play well all over the ice. How many guys in the league are capable of year in year out 30+ goals, 70+ points while playing in all situations? Now how much do you think those guys are worth? You know the freaky thing? He's been around forever it seems and is actually younger than Datsyuk and a year older than Z. Here's an interesting stat Penalty Kill minutes per game Datsyuk: 53 seconds Zetterberg: 1 min 3 seconds Marleau: 2 min 26 seconds Marleau is a fantastic defensive player and actually had a better offensive season than either of our two superstar, two-way guys. Dats makes 6.7 mil, Z makes nearly 6.1. Would I pay Marleu 7? I dunno. As a GM I probably would've like him to be in the 6.5 range. But to compare his contract to Campbell or to say its a grossly overpaid contract shows a very limited knowledge of the topic whatsoever. Personally, I'd be embarrassed to show up on a message board and clearly not know what the heck i'm talking about and apparently basing all my opinions on knee-jerk or personal feelings. 1 Uncle Danny reacted to this

What's always overlooked is that Marleau is one of the league's top DEFENSIVE forwards. He also happens to be one of the league's most capable offensive forwards. Top-end two-way forwards are hard to come by. Toews, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Hossa, Parise, Richards, Marleau, Kesler. How many guys are that kind of good two-way? Not many others, if any. Backstrom, Zajac, Koivu, Alfredsson, the Sedins are decent two-way players, but none fit into that group of the truly elite.
