Blackhawks doing their best to embrace change

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

All over NHL.com, and the hockey world in general are statements like:

"Blackhawks embrace change!"

"Blackhawks revamp!"

"Blackhawks really look up right now!"

Heh...bulls***. They changed out half their team, because they were the first team to really "buy" a cup under the salary cap.

After watching them work this post-season....I now realize.....they're desperately just trying to fill holes that they could not afford.

Bottom dwellers? Likely not. A Stanley Cup competitor? Yeah sure, maybe, anyone can be.

But next year when they say "The defending Stanley Cup Champions!!!!!!"

I will simply laugh, smirk to myself, and say, "Yeah, a few of them."

At least Pittsburgh, after losing in the finals, primarily kept the same team.

Chicago...one hit wonder.

They have by far the most changes of any post-lockout champion.

2006 Carolina Hurricanes Offseason -

IN

G John Grahame (FA from Tampa Bay)

D David Tanabe (FA from Boston)

D Tim Gleason (trade from Los Angeles)

F Trevor Letowski (FA from Columbus)

F Scott Walker (trade from Nashville)

F Brad Isbister (FA from Boston)

F Eric Belanger (trade from Los Angeles)

OUT

G Martin Gerber (FA to Ottawa)

D Aaron Ward (FA to Rangers)

D Oleg Tverdovsky (trade to Los Angeles)

F Matt Cullen (FA to Rangers)

F Doug Weight (FA to St. Louis)

F Josef Vasicek (trade to Nashville)

F Mark Recchi (FA to Pittsburgh)

While not exactly losing any big names like Staal or Brind'amour, the players they lost to retirement or free agency were duly replaced, and Carolina looked just as good, if not better than the previous season.

2007 Anaheim Ducks Offseason -

IN

D Mathieu Schneider (FA from Detroit)

F Todd Bertuzzi (FA from Detroit)

F Mark Mowers (FA from Boston)

F Bobby Ryan (rookie)

OUT

F Dustin Penner (FA to Edmonton)

D Scott Niedermayer (temporary retirement)

F Teemu Selanne (temporary retirement)

F Shawn Thornton (FA to Boston)

F Ryan Shannon (trade to VAN)

2008 Detroit Red Wings Offseason -

IN

F Marian Hossa (FA from Pittsburgh)

G Ty Conklin (FA from Pittsburgh)

F Ville Leino (rookie)

OUT

G Dominik Hasek (retirement)

F Dallas Drake (retirement)

D Kyle Quincey (waivers, picked up by LA)

F Mark Hartigan (FA to Russia)

2009 Pittsburgh Penguins Offseason -

IN

D Jay McKee (FA from STL)

D Martin Skoula (FA from MIN)

G Brent Johnson (FA from WA)

F Mike Rupp (FA from NJ)

OUT

D Rob Scuderi (FA to LA)

F Miroslav Satan (FA to Boston)

D Hal Gill (FA to MTL)

G Mathieu Garon (FA to CBJ)

All in all, no major depth losses for any of the teams that weren't adequately replaced. Now let's look at Chicago thusfar.

IN

F Marty Reasoner (trade from ATL)

D Ivan Vishnevsky (trade from ATL)

F Viktor Stalberg (trade from TOR)

Six prospects

OUT

F Dustin Byfuglien (trade to ATL)

D Brent Sopel (trade to ATL)

F Andrew Ladd (trade to ATL)

F Ben Eager (trade to ATL)

F Kris Versteeg (trade to TOR)

F Colin Fraser (trade to EDM)

F Adam Burish (FA to DAL)

That's seven players who played roles in the Stanley Cup win.

Its funny how i keep seeing Hawks fans saying

"Great trade"

"Thanks Toronto"

"We made out great in that trade"

seriously.....what are they smoking?

Thought this was interesting -

Hawks will be without - (so far)

Regular Season

70 Goals, 93 Assists

Playoffs

22 Goals, 23 Assists

If Madden goes it will add 10, 13 to Regular Season and 1, 1 to Playoffs.

they had a +62 goal differential last year.

we went from a +51 the year before, lost - what was it, 60 or so goals when Hossa, Huds, Sammy left, and finished last year a +13. Injuries had a lot to do with that obviously but Chicago is looking at the kind of swing we saw after last year.

To quote George Malik

" As someone who was nothing less than furious at the fact that the NHL allowed the Blackhawks to get away with not qualifying five restricted free agents, I can't help but laugh my rear off as the salary cap catches up to them, and those theoretically unrestricted free agents leave town. The Hawks won't bring back John Madden, and have lost Dustin Byfuglien, Brent Sopel, Ben Eager, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd and Adam Burish, and remain mashed up against the salary cap, with only $3 million (per Capgeek.com) to sigh three forwards, two defensemen and attempt to re-sign Antti Niemi and Niklas Hjalmarsson. In the words of Nelson Muntz, HA-HAH! "

Hjalmarsson deserves 2.5M while Niemi could get 4M/year easy. Who's next?

Would love Madden on this team. His video game kicks ass.

EDIT: Kidding aside he kills penalties very well and would be a good addition to the 4th line. Realizing he is somewhat similar to Helmer but he has proved he can win a Cup or 2, maybe 3? not too sure. Either way sign him up.

No thanks. He made 2.75 million last year.

I am more interested to what the plus/minus shift will be. Remember Buff screened goalies, Madden and others did a great grinding job playing defensive forward. I think people forget too often that players, even if they are putting points up also have to make sure the other team isn't... cough cough, not like we have any of THOSE players cough cough.

This could hurt Chicago even more than the points, but that Playoff point count is disgusting.

Love the legwork! These are the posts that make me come to these sites. I apprecate the hell out of it!

One thing you can give them some credit for is that they didn't lose but one player without getting something back... I mean that is somewhat impressive with their cap problems that they get back a bunch of prospects.

They have to have a strong farm system right now, because they had so many bad years and now they have so many prospects from Atlanta and Toronto... who has had so many bad years!

Wow Buff was a -7?! Can't wait to see what happens when he goes to that "hockey haven" of the south.

Yeah you have to remember with him that most of his role is that of Homer. Stand in front during the power play where you get no plus for contributing to a goal. To figure out the true plus minus worth of a player remember to remove the points scored on the PP from his total points. That is the amount of pluses he was out there for, and then compare to the negitive to see how many goals he was out there for. If most of his points were on the power play odds are that the amount of goals he was out there for is lower than you would initially think. If he had no power play points what so ever, or very low, and alot of even strength points then you get the idea that he was out for a lot of negitive points.

I always handicap that for players, because that is the only real easy way you can tell a statistical skew for some players.

If the Hawks somehow finished fourth in the Central in the next two years, it would almost make the Cup worthwhile.

Ummmm.... serious?

A cup is always worth wild. If you were to finish in last 50 times in a row and get a cup afterwards then it was worth it. I mean ask Chicago about that, they practically did! lols.
