Red Wings Making Play for Modano

I am sorry how many cups did Quincey help the Wings win?

Cheli was a mentor as well as D-man.

And what exactly did the Wings lose in Quincey?

The Wings top 4 is solid, Quincey breaking into it would have taken an act of congress or a complete falling apart by Stuart or Kronwall.

Then look at his salary, how would the Wings have kept him with out sacrificing depth.

In order to keep Quincey the Wings would have to lose Kronwall or Flip.

Besides IF Modano is signed the Wings could easily trade the very affordable contract that they just gave Miller. Ritola could be the scratch, as Meech could also be traded.

A top pairing defenceman (in Colorado) and a current 3rd pairing defenceman in Detroit and going forward, a 2nd pairing on this team. Holland doesn't like the look of our depth on defence, well imagine a 3rd pairing of Quincey and Ericsson and having Kindl as our 7th. Brilliant. So keeping Chelios was a mistake, whether you like to admit it or not. He was a mentor fine, but get him on the associate coaches staff to perform that role. On the ice he waa regularly a healthy scratch.

And how do you know it is 5+ years of Ritola, bigger names have hit the NHL and busted, lesser names have hit the NHL and been huge stars, the odds are Ritola is some where in between and is an ok to decent 3rd liner, which in a year the Wings will have an abundance of that.

So Modano this year, Mursak next year, Tatar the year after, still with Abby, and Helm and you also want to keep Eaves and Miller, Plus Cleary, Bert, that is an awful lot of 3rd 4th line guys for him to compete with.

Maybe just maybe the Wings front office knows more about the situation than either or I, maybe just maybe.

And it is not that I want 1 year of Modano over 5 years of Ritola, it is that I want the proven over the crapshoot. Ritola may not even be in the league in 5 years.

You're right, but what about next years UFA class, does he have a better shot than any one in that class, better shot than Mursak?

You continue to ignore the prospects behind him that I keep bringing up and instead focus on Modano, this year it is Modano he is competing with, next year it is some one else.

If the Wings brass thought he was as valuable as you did they would not be looking to add Modano at the expense of him, if it is even him they lose!

I do agree with most of this, but how about giving Ritola a full season to accurately measure if he's got solid 3rd line NHL potential before throwing him under a bus for 12 months of Modano? I hope you're right, I hope we trade Miller, keep Ritola as a 13/14th forward, but I'm not sure.

The Wings brass loves these golden oldies, guys who have achieved so much and want that last little bit more. How successful has it been? In recent years for Chelios at the expense of Quincey, and even the most biased Wings fans could see it wasn't worth it. We're about to repeat it, this time Modano for Ritola.

He didn't impress in the games he played in the nhl and his numbers in the AHL are mediocre...

Fair n Square.

Edit: ahl not nhl.

Eaves is yet to sign his offer, which was given to him long before Modano was anywhere near a reality, he has his offer, if he wanted to be here he would be. This is not a case of Holland leaving Eaves out in the wind, Eaves knows what the Wings offer is and if he had signed it, the Wings would have less cap space to throw at Modano.

Eaves was a Wing for less than a year, what makes you think he will stay here for years, or even be able to crack the roster in years to come?

That was so they could hold onto his rights. I will bet they just added the 10% to his contract but they knew he would not sign it.

The 1.5 million dollar man is gonna be sitting in the press box if Modano signs. What a waste of cap space

I don't know why I got rated down for this remark but its the truth. Splitting time or not its a waste.

Yes, those two games (all of 10 minutes TOC) in 2007/08 when he played on the 4th line with Mark Hartigan. Managed an assist too.

And this year, was very impressive in his 5 game stint when we were banged up. Finished up getting PP time because his play was so promising.

And I assume you made a mistake and meant AHL numbers? As I said, you'd know, right?

I am sorry I read the bolded part and forgot everything else you said, how successful has it been?

Where should I start, the last four years alone include 1 WCF, 2 SCF, 1 SC, and beyond that one of the most successful franchises in the history of the modern sports era.

That is how successful it has been. Players are willing to come to, or stay in Detroit for less money than they would anywhere else. This is the best franchise in sports for the last 20 years, 4 cups.

Again Quincey does not crack the top 4 in Detroit, and as a bottom pairing guy seeing 10-15 minutes a night as opposed to the 20 he saw in LA or COL his numbers drop dramatically.

When Lids retires, Holland signs another top 2 D-man, which Quincey is not, thus moving him down the list, he does not have the physical side to replace a Kronwall or Stuart. Maybe he could replace Ralf, but that would be a weak top 2, and the PP would suffer IMO.

Aussie_Wing thanks for making sense in a thread where people are dreaming and making excuses. The entire league gets younger and faster, while we continue to sign every 40yr old that's up for free agency. WTF is going on here? Our you guys can play, just give them a f*cking chance.

It must be really tiresome to be a bottom six guy in the Red Wings organization. You get to play every single possible yr in the minors. Get squeezed for every cent come contract time. Get replaced by a 40 yr old every other season. Then finally you realize, you must go somewhere else to get a chance to play.

Funny how people talk about youth when Detroit's "veteran" team was able to beat one of the younger teams in the league back in 08.

Eh, f*** that. I WANT YOUNG PLAYERS!!

Honestly, you sound like the media after the 2001 playoffs. And last time I checked Holland was able to prove them wrong considering he knows more about the game and the players in his system than anyone on these forums.

Who is saying anything about his numbers? Can he play in the NHL? Yes, without question. Could he be a tremendous bottom pairing guy for us that would shore up our defence? Heck yes.

As for your unrelated spiel about our recent success, how is that in any way attributed to our obsession with the squeezing out any NHL left in the oldies? We won mainly in part due to Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom, they haven't got anything to do with your point.

Guest Hatethedrake!

I don't see Helm or Abdelkader being squeezed out. Hudler paid his dues and got his chance. Same with Filppula, Ericsson and Kronwall. Look at Jimmy Howard. Bottom line is that young players can succeed here but they will not make it on the sole premise that they are YOUNG PLAYERS. You earn your spot. Well unless your name is Jason Williams and you have revealing pictures of Holland and Babcock dry humping squirrels.

You asked how successful the approach had been, read your post I quoted, I bolded it for you in that one, so I am not sure how it is related I just know I responded to your question.

Cleary, Homer, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, Flip, Sammy etc.. had a lot to do with the Wings winning, Dallas Drake for one was a beast in the last cup run and that will not show up in any stats you can drag up, Ozzie won a game or two as well, so to say it was only those three is BUNK!

In this NHL depth is key, ask the Hawks, their depth was massive in winning the cup this year, the Pens didn't win because of only Crosby, Malkin, and Gonchar, they again had a lot of depth.

Please don't respond to my posts, It's beyond moronic and we've done this dance before. I'm so sick of this "OMG WE WONZ DA CUP and can't do anything wrong mentality s***"

Chicago just won the cup and half their team just left because of poor management. DETROIT has lost good players from bad decisions just like that. To think otherwise shows a real lack of understanding. Some of it was cap related, some was NOT!

If Holland Signs Modano, it will mean losing a good young player (mistake). This has Chelios written all over it.

Hang on, so let me get this straight.

Sign Modano= amazing depth?

The Wings had it right a month ago when they were saying how Abdelkader was going to really step it up this season.

Hank - Dats - Homer

Franzen - Flip - Bert

Huds - Abby - Cleary

Eaves - Helm - Miller

Draper, Ritola.

Looks like decent depth to me. But I guess adding this current beast Modano means success, and a whole lot of it. I'm sorry but possible success in 2010/11 has nothing to do with Mike Modano.

Abdelkader does not have enough offensive upside to center a third line atm

And I think Modano will be more succesful in the assist department than abdelakder

MODANO TO HUDLER SCOOOORES

How about taking a gamble and finding out, especially given we're about to take a gamble on whether Modano still resembles a somewhat decent hockey player.

Again the hope is Abby can step up and fill the third line role, where as Modano's skill and even last season's stats show he can fill the third line role.

Remember this time last offseason when Helm, Abby etc where going to replace the scoring lost by Hossa, Hudler, and Sammy.

How did that work out, banking on unknowns to provide what was lost?

This is the Detroit Red Wings, hoping on making the playoffs is not how things are done.

Hoping Abby can all of the sudden become a scorer at the NHL level is not what the Wings are in the Business of doing.

Modano is still a .5 ppg player, Abby is not.

Honestly though, I would be shocked if he's not amongst the top 2-3 by the time all is said and done as long as he stays healthy. I hate him, but the dude is talented.

He's talented, but I doubt that he'll overcome Modano as the highest scoring American player, or Chelios/Leetch, two of the best Americans at their position. Heck, a young Jeremy Roenick was more dangerous than Kane, Roenick scored 149 goals in three seasons.

I don't see him overtaking Hull either. Surprised he hasn't been mentioned at all in the side discussion of great american hockey players.

Modano has proven over the last few years that he's still capable of putting up around 20 goals and around 30 assists. That's pretty good for a guy that playing on the third line (and sometimes 4th line) with not much help around him. Plus, he's still pretty fast, is good defensively, is a leader and playing for the Wings in what will likely be his last year, he'll be even more motivated to win the Cup in front of his hometown.

I hadn't even thought of him. I think that most don't consider him a TRUE American, considering that he was actually born in Canada, and a reason why so many Canadians were sour that he played for the Americans during the Olympics rather than the Canadians. But regardless of that, I don't see Kane topping 500 goals, much less over 700.

Abdelkader hasn't played 82 NHL games yet in a season. He'll likely struggle as he paces himself. It's understandable that they want a more reliable veteran in there.

And he never will if they keep signing washed up 40 yr olds to play in front of him. Hey I know lets sign Maltby and Chelios probably still wants to play I'm sure? we could sign him up again so we could lose Kindl on waivers. Makes total sense.
