Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 http://detnews.com/article/20100713/SPORTS0103/7130334/1128/rss16 Mike Modano likely seeks better dealDetroit --It's about the money. It's always about the money. If the money were right, Mike Modano would've already signed a one-year deal with the Red Wings. The money, obviously, isn't right, but the money isn't going to change, either. "We made an offer, we made our pitch," Wings general manager Ken Holland said Monday. "But this being a cap world, we've made lots of commitments. We don't have a lot of wiggle room." Therefore, he has about $3 million left. Restricted free agents Derek Meech (who could be signed this week), Justin Abdelkader and Darren Helm are going to get a piece of that $3 million. Looking more and more like Mike won't be a Wing. 1 GoWings1905 reacted to this
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Seriously Mike is retarded not to come to detroit at this stage of his career with all the stuff that's going on, best chance to win, coming "home", getting the most out of veterans, top notch classy organisation etc.... mind boggling how he picks another team than detroit... How can still money be the most important factor at age 40? s***... Keep in mind he still hasn't chosen, but I'd be very disappointed to see him go somewhere else. I hope Kenny is offering him at least 1 million.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 Keep in mind he still hasn't chosen, but I'd be very disappointed to see him go somewhere else. I hope Kenny is offering him at least 1 million. $3 mil remaining. Roughly: $1 mil Helm $1 mil Abdelkader $750k Meech (might S&T, waive) Holland says he wants $700k up his sleeve just in case, I don't see how that's possible, ESPECIALLY if we were to sign Modano. Because that "approximately 3m left" includes another about 700k... We have about 3.7 in cap space right now and that does not include the salary (750k) we'd dump by moving Miller if we signed Modano... also, Meech will probably get no more than 600k even IF he went to arbitration and he will almost certainly be moved as well... So it's more realistic to say: 1m to Helm 1m to Abdelkader 1m to Modano -750k from Miller Meech moved... and that leaves us at about 1.4m in cap space left to sign a vet d-man AND give us cushion for call ups... It's VERY possible and plausible...

How can still money be the most important factor at age 40? s***... Tough to argue with this *only becuase* we're talking about a guy who's made a ton over the course of his career and the difference isn't an earth shattering amount. I've always said "it's easy to tell a guy to take less when its not your money", but if Mike's gonna split hairs over $500-$750k *at this point in his career* he's clearly valuing destination just as much as cash. Of the 4 he's considering, either team other than SJ or Detroit makes zero sense unless he wants money...plain and simple. In that's the case, enjoy pissing away your last season in ANA or MIN, because a cup chance is not in their immediate future.
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 (edited) Fair call, but given what was mentioned in the above article, I don't think Modano is coming. That's pure speculation. We have no idea what Modano is thinking. If we trade/waive Miller & Meech, Helm/Abds resign at $950k/$850k, sign Modano at $1 million and someone on defense for $1 million, we'll have about $550k in space. But doesn't it make you wish Lidstrom, Holmstrom and Bertuzzi would have taken just a little bit less? Holmstrom's deal was spot on, Bert's a TAD too much, but overall not bad. 1 GoWings1905 reacted to this

I wanted Lidstrom back no matter what and the fact we had to pay $6.2M to get him I am fine with that. But at the end of the day, even getting him at $6M would have made this much easier. stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 But doesn't it make you wish Lidstrom, Holmstrom and Bertuzzi would have taken just a little bit less? The fact is, that all 3 of them took less here than they would have got on the open market and we should just be grateful we still have them, than nitpicking over small variances on the cap... 2 55fan and vladdy16 reacted to this

Same discussion this board had at the time he resigned. Would it have been friggin sweet if he took less? Of course. Are we thankful he's back? Absolutely. The end. Just trying to save others the hassle. 1 55fan reacted to this

Jesusberg 1,256 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 This is not cool. A friend of mine is a Canucks fan and he predicted that Modano wouldn't make a decision until sometime in August. He cannot be right. I cannot take the gloating, lol.

yzerman_scores 1 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 This just in: The KHL and Dallas Stars are now in the hunt for Mike Modano (just because everyone else is). Mike says he could see himself fitting i well, with everyone. LOL!!!!
Booster313 138 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 All these beat writers are just speculating, none of them have any sources, the only team that can really offer him more money is Anaheim. The sharks and wild are in similar cap situations. Look I am not saying he's coming, but don't write him off based on the beat writers opinions with no sources, as time goes on what sells more newspapers, speculating he isn't coming or saying everything is fine, Mike is just relaxing this summer. No one except Mike knows what he is thinking right now.

I really think this dance with the Wings etc. was aimed at drumming up interest by the California teams where he actually wants to play.

TheDetroitRedWings 286 Report post Posted July 13, 2010 I'm officially starting to get annoyed by how long this is dragging out. Modano himself has already said he knows the sooner he makes his decision the better. Especially for the Red Wings, cause if he decides to retire or go to another team, the Wings need time to make a few signings. But with each passing day that goes by, the market gets smaller and smaller, leaving us with less options. Mike better make his decision sometime this week. Cause if he doesn't, I think it's time for us to move on and get our team's roster set.

Plan a is Modano, plan b is no Modano, it's that simple, and other late summer additions will happen either way. The difference will be the amount of cap space left over and if we have to move Ritola/Meech.
