First of all, the Bowmans didn't "go for broke" and sign a million players, that was the all-knowing Dale Tallon, the Bowman's simply inheretid that mess after the deed was done. In what way are they doing a good job at all? They've already lost about every single player that could. They only reason they are getting picks is because they literally do not have any other financial option but to dismantle their entire team... I love the Bowmans but... a used band-aid could be doing what they are doing right now... Take off your Homer glasses and see the facts: Chicago Blackhawks 2010 Stanley Cup Champions. I did mention the cup, btw. However, we are now talking about their FUTURE. The Cup happened, they gambled and won... that was last season... and now... they are completely screwed. I don't think its homer glasses at all... how can you not see this as well? How many players have they lost this off season? How many more will they lose? I don't understand this blind assumption that stockpiling draft picks gaurentees a good team in the future. Explain to me exactly what Bowman "did" that was so commendable so far? Who are these periphery players you speak of? So they're going to fill two whole lines and a two D pairings with people who will sign for league minimum? He may be a great GM but this isn't a demonstration of it. He's forced into this action. It's not genius or cleverness, it's the only thing he CAN do. And picks hardly ever pan out. It could work for them, but they'll have to suck for 3 or 4 years to get to that point. Lidstrom for life 20 Report post Posted July 10, 2010 So if this works out for San Jose are they just going to let Devin Setoguchi go? I am not sure they will be better than they were last year. Hjalmarsson is an upgrade over a 40 year old Blake so their D will be better but their goaltending situation is much worse and now their offense isn't going to be as good as they also lost Malhotra and have not signed, nor will they have the cap space to sign, a decent replacement forward for either of those guys so I am really not that worried about San Jose. They only have 5 forwards signed that had at least 20 points last year (Draper had 22 points last year for goodness sake). Does anyone else agree? If there are credible sources suggesting this, I would genuinely like to read them and I think it would add a LOT more validity to this argument in my mind... i dont have the source with me, other than reading that on message boards. It was an idea that Bowman apparently talked about on Chicago radio, with regards to what he will do with Huet Of course, with his "we don't need to make any more trades" and "offer sheets don't concern me" statements proving to be the worst smokescreens in a while, this could be another smokescreen. I'm of the opinion that whatever the hawks do, they won't be having Huet against the cap once the season starts, whether it be loaning him to a European league, or burying his ass in the AHL. Ok, heres the skinny on that: While they can do that, they can't do it till the beginning of the season, meaning that he will count against their cap... so until that point they still only have 3.6 million to play with. they can go over by 10% meaning they have 3.6 to sign 6 players meaning all players will need to sign contracts at .6 million. I know they can't get rid of his cap hit until the season starts, and that hurts them since they don't have flexibility in bringing in free agents. whether they send him to Europe or the AHL, his hit comes off only when the season starts Edited July 10, 2010 by jeff48109 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Dave Tallon built it, and the mess that came with it. As far as the off season, it's not a stroke of brilliance it's the obvious move to get draft picks for players. There isn't an option A B C or D... there is only an option A... shed salary, get picks in return... any GM would be doing the same thing, the best one and the worst one would have to make the same decision. No one is arguing that Scotty Bowman isn't one of the greatest minds in hockey and that his son Stan probably inherited some of that knowledge...
