Osgood may retire following this season

A lot of users on LGW are like that. Don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

Heh... I'm kinda like that sometimes. Though Doc definitely takes it to all new levels. I think it stems from boredom. At least in my case it does. :)

Plus a good debate does a mind good once in a while, even if it's about black tape or white tape.

This is where we are going to have to agree to disagree.

Once again, agree to disagree.

Yep, no where to go from here. I'd have had no problem if Babcock had followed your view either. I'm not arguing Ozzie should have been shut out of starting as he was. I'm just not seeing an issue with Howard getting all the turns since Babcock felt he was ready and now he's all the more experienced going into this year. I think the Junes were catching up to us and a young goalie who hasn't played that many games has us better positioned for this year. So I don't just see it working out in that Howard went the distance, but we're that much better off in October as well. But I got no where new to go. Cheers!

As the season progresses, I have a feeling that this is indeed his last year.

I'm thinking that too. I'm hoping he gets a chance to pass Fuhr on the all-time wins list.

And you just know that the Wings will keep him in the organization in some capacity. Unless Stevie Y snatches him up to be a goaltending coach.

I really was hoping he'd have a good season and before his injury it looked like he might have had a chance at it. Sadly, I have a feeling he'll be in the same boat as last year, lucky to get in and play. I'd like him to at least get his 400 wins.

I agree about the Wings keeping him here, hope it happens. He'd be a great coach someday.

No offense to Ozzie but I hope he does Retire. He has been my favorite goalie for years and I'm very happy and thankful he is on this roster and what he has done with this team. However, when it's your time to hang it up it's just that time. I wish him all the best and no matter what he decides I'll be happy for him.

Let's all hope so...

I think he'll retire, not because he can't play the game, but who wants to play backup forever? I think his heart is with Detroit, so he won't request a trade or sign somewhere else even though he still has talent. Aside from Yzerman, Osgood is the other player I most associate with Detroit from this most recent generation or so. The man has the Winged Wheel tatooed on his heart.

As long as he goes out with a Cup over his head.

I'd love to see him get one last Hurrah, but given that him starting would mean that either Howard gets injured or is playing badly (neither of which is good), I hope he at least finishes the season as a great back-up.

I think he's good in the capacity of being a back-up if he doesn't go too long between starts, and he has been doing a great job of mentoring Jimmy.

I'm not ready for the Old Guard to move on, but it has started (several years ago), and there are so few of them left that I'm clinging to the ones who still contribute, even if it is contributing as a back-up.

No. :( He needs more Cups. At least 1 or 2...and it makes it worse because if we had won it in 09 I think he would have gotten the Conn Smythe. He still hasn't gotten the recognition he deserves IMO, and he can't retire until he does.

Players who play forever: Gordie Howe, Chris Chelios, Chris Osgood?

Ozzie get's his 400 win and retires after this year, question, is he going to the Hall of Fame? With 3 Cup rings and 400 wins, I say yes.

The thing that bothers me most about losing to the Pens in 2009 is that Ozzie was robbed of a Conn Smythe.

Remember, anyone who says no is going to get a punch in the teeth from D-Mac.

Damn straight. I won't let a little reason get in the way of my comfort. That is why I believe in Jesus and write my letter to Santa Clause every. year.

Jesus, Santa and Osgood... all eating from the same trough. Interesting. Screw the HOF, you can't find better company than that. :)

Detroit, MI, United States (AHN) - Detroit goalie Chris Osgood realizes he's getting very close to the 400-wins plateau.

But the Detroit Red Wings goalie has his reasons for not wanting to make a big issue out the anticipated major achievement.

Osgood won his 398th career game in the NHL Saturday night by stopping 23 Nashville Predator shots in a 5-2 Detroit victory at Joe Louis Arena.

“He played well,” said Detroit coach Mike Babcock. “It was a bounce back game for him. It's important he plays well for us when he gets the chance to start.”

Osgood lost a start against Phoenix on Thursday night.

In past seasons, the aging veteran, who led the Wings to a Stanley Cup, has found himself more in a No. 2 role.

But Osgood has been pressed into action the last two games with No. 1 Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard sidelined because of back spasms.

“I just try to play the games and not focus on that at all,” Osgood said of the milestone. “I'm trying my best not to think about it while I'm playing and letting it happen. It's obviously taking longer than I would like. But I have to keep working and persevering and work hard.”

When he gets win No. 400, it will be an emotional relief, Osgood admits.

“Sure it will because it's taken a long time,” he said. “I'd be lying if I said I'd be perfectly fine if I didn't get it. But I'm trying not to think about it and make a big deal of it. When it happens. I'll celebrate it.”

The 37-year-old Osgood, drafted by the Red Wings in 1991, now has a 2-2 record this season with an .893 saves percentage and 2.76 goals against average.

“I felt a little rusty the start of my last game,” he said. “I felt good at the start because I played a lot at exhibitions. I felt good. It's my job to feel as good as I can all the time because I never know when I'll be going in. But the opportunity to play more helps.”

Osgood went from playing 43 games in 2007-08 and 46 games in 2008-2009 to 23 last season.

Toward the end of the game Saturday night, Red Wing fans at Joe Louis Arena were stirring up memories of years past by chanting “Ossie! Ossie! Ossie!”

“They're always good to me,” he said. “I didn't play at home the whole second half (of last season). I miss playing at home. It's a place I love to play at. They're behind me, it drives me to play well for them.”

Osgood likes Detroit's title chances this season.

“We have so much talent,” he said. “If we play a smart game and get pucks in deep and don't turn pucks over and let our talent take over, we'll win a ton of games.”

Osgood has especially been impressed with Detroit scoring sensations Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk, who have combined for 23 points in the Red Wings' first nine games and compares them to among the past greats in franchise history including Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov.

Thats another reason I hated losing in '09. Ozzie for sure would have been Conn Smythe winner.

I don't think many people actually make the HoF without having a good team around them. While I see the point you are making, I personally feel that he has done enough on his own to make it.

Some forwards do - goalies and defencemen almost never. I'm willing to wager Osgood doesn't make it, but I could be wrong.
