Let's stop and think for a minute here. Wings reportedly offer Modano and contract, 3-4 teams jump in too. Wings reportedly offer Maltby a contract... huh? huh? Yeah.

Holland's basically cheating here. It's like when a guy sets his g/f up with another guy so he can dump her without feeling guilty. Kirk Maltby is being dumped.

Nothing to get too worked up about.

Young guys will get playing time if they deserve it or earn it or whatever. Maltby possibly re-signing here and the status of young players should be viewed as independent of each other.

It's either last forward slot or he's down in Grand Rapids if he comes back I think.

And this money isn't going to break the bank in all likelihood.

Maltby's on his last legs but I'm not going to lose sleep if he's re-signed.

And I will jump through my computer and strangle anybody who suggests this prevents Lilja from coming back. I want Lilja back like everybody else pretty much, but they already offered him a contract, he's exploring the market/probably going to sign somewhere else, well BEFORE all this Maltby stuff started.

Just had surgery, and he will know his place in the lineup. He knows the system and can still, along with Draper, keep a good morale in the locker room. I'm sure Malts would be hungrier then an old Modano who might come here and try to coast his way to a cup in front of his home town...he's got nothing else to prove. We know what we'lll get out of Maltby....with Modano, its up in the air.

If Modano is not signed, Maltby will....at least it seems this way. And if Modano isn't signed (which seems to be the way its turning out), then Abby will be the third center. Meech will likely be dealt. That leaves Helm and Eaves as the 4th line. Miller and Draper are the rotating guys and Ritola (yet to be signed?) will be the odd man out. Malts will be a good practice guy, and comes handy when someone gets injured. Modano would provide more of a problem then Maltby would. 500k vs 1-1.5 mil for Modano. I'll take Malts.

True or not true, which I'm sure it is...I'll take Malts, probably his last year anyway.

I love Maltby as much as the next guy, and I thank him for everything he has done for this team over the years, but part of me hopes he just hangs up his skates and calls it a day. Still, if he does end up signing though, part of me will feel good just to keep this guy who was so good for us for one more year before the core of this team all retires. I guess that sort of attitude is probably a good fit with Wings management.

I am thinking this has to be a loyalty two-way contract. Not that Malts can't contribute in some form, but there are better players with a similar game in the system. Look for Malts to spend most of the season in GR unless there are significant injuries.

I think it's funny that they offered him a contract and he didn't immediately jump all over it. I wonder if San Jose and Minnesota will be making him an offer as well...

Maybe it is a 2 way contract and that's why he isn't jumping all over it. Or he could be mulling retirement. This might be an indication that Holland is no longer confident that Modano will sign here.

I really don't see a place for Maltby on the team with Helm, Abdelkader, Miller, Eaves, Ritola and Draper.. I hope this doesn't mean that Holland won't be getting Helm or Abby signed.

I had heard Maltby was considering San Jose, so it may depend on what they have offered him since he'd have to re-locate his family. But if he wants to play for more than just next season, he won't take the Wings offer if there is something else out there.
