Maybe overpayment not sure just passing along info.

Wow, that's absurd. He's being paid more than Datsyuk.

You're right, he's a good player but he's far too close to that $7mil salary range.

Exactly, when teams make stupid signings like that it really screws up the market.

How much can Modano make there if they're throwing around cash like this?

Well they already have something like 15 forwards signed and 2.3 left. If anyone snatches Modano I would think it would be San Jose. They have 9 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goalies signed and have 6.1 to play with still.

Have you seen the way his deal is structured?

Sources: Koivu's deal is 7 years, $47.25 million. $6.75 AAV, no-trade, 5 signing bonuses throughout. Richest deal in #mnwild history

Check out the details : http://capgeek.com/players/display.php?id=925

EDIT: The copy/paste of the table didn't translate well.

Koivu is a very good player, but not that good. I guess its because Minny has money to spend. I think Koivu would be good aruond 5 million for that kid of term, not 7. Thats 2 million too high

I'm pretty sure the Wild are just scared of losing another superstar. Losing Gaborik was a big hit to them. It's a lot like the Sabres and Vanek after Drury and Briere left. I know Vanek got an offer sheet, but same idea.

Mikko is no superstar.

"You look around the league at all the No. 1 centers in the league, and you ask yourself honestly, 'How many players are better than Mikko?'" said Wild GM Chuck Fletcher.

Boy, I don't think he's going to like the answer to that question.

Lets get the list going

Datsyuk

Zetterberg

Crosby

Malkin

H. Sedin

Getzlaf

Backstrom

I would dare even say Stamkos

Thorton

anyone else want to add to it?

Hold on a sec. $9M in the LAST year? ...Does that make sense to anyone?

The reason it is backloaded is to make it easier to pay for the owner. 9 Million in 7 years will not be worth as much in terms of spending power as it is today. This is why most players want front-loaded contracts. Contrary to what Ben_USMC says on this site... inflation is very real.
