Sharp next? or do they skip Niemi and then are set?

Not even close. According to capgeek they have $140k to sign 6 more players.

They'll need to keep Niemi, get rid of Huet and sign a Turco or Theodore type goalie. This probably means moving Sharp to pay for Niemi. Getting rid of Huet will allow them to fill out the roster with scrubs and sign a semi-decent backup.

If they bury Huet, trade Sharp and are lucky enough to get Niemi for $3.5m, this is their situation:

Brent Seabrook ($3.500m) / Niklas Hjalmarsson ($3.500m)

John Scott ($0.512m)

GOALTENDERS

Corey Crawford ($0.800m) /Antti Niemi ($3.500m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $4,157,753

SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $54,651,590; BONUSES: $65,000

CAP SPACE (17-man roster): $4,813,410

Just under $5m for a minimum of 5 more players. Not a desirable situation but probably their best case scenario.

Can a team with Kopecky as a top 3 winger really contend for the Cup?

Lets say Niemi gets 2.7 mil. Here is the hawks lineup. Overall, they retain their top 6 forwards, top 4 and #7 defensemen, and their #1 goalie. (In other words, they retained their core). Burish and Eager are replaced with Dowell and Bickell. (Upgrade IMO). Lalonde is a promising prospect as well.

Stalberg < Byfuglien

Makarov < Versteeg

Skille < Ladd

They lost 3 solid players and at the very least need one of the replacements to match the 35-50 pts Byfuglien or Versteeg would have put up. All in all though, not bad. They will still be a top 4-5 team in conference. Not quite the depth to make another cup run however, but nor do the Red Wings.

:hehe: I wish I knew a Hawk fan right about now :P

they are all happy and believe that

1) they have the best top 6 forwards in the league

2) the rookies who will fill out their bottom six will mostly be calder candidates

3) having either jose theodore or turco as their goalie will be fine since their goalies won't be called upon to make many saves anyway

4) there won't be injuries during the season

They probably would move Bolland before Sharp though, sharp is more important to them
