Who's going to replace Lidstrom for next season

Even if it means landing the soon to be premier defensemen in the NHL? Smith MAY become a great defensemen. Doughty, at the age of 20, already is, and at a level Smith will most probably never reach.

Here's the way I see it. In today's NHL, drafting and player development is more important than it has ever been. While it would be great to get Doughty (obviously) I question whether it would really be worth it or not. I see people on here throwing out names of prospects like Tatar, but I find that completely ridiculous. Tatar is the number one prospect in our system. He is also the youngest player to ever play in the AHL. I mean come one guys, he is only 19 years old! He has the chance to be something special. You also have to keep in mind that by the time he hits his prime, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, and Franzen will all be on the tail end of their careers (what did you guys think they would play forever?). Eventually, somebody will have to replace them. Scouts and Wings' brass believes Tatar can do that, so why package him for Doughty? Just because we all think that once Nick leaves its all star defensemen or bust?

Yeah maybe Chara is a good option until Smith and Almqvist etc is totally ready... he is UFA too so just gotta give him the big cash and good chance to win cup etc (right :D)

Chara, IMO, would be a good replacement. He has a few years left and can still play first line minutes. He's got a booming shot (obviously, NHL record) and he absolutely punishes opponents (except for Datsyuk  ). I feel like by the time Chara's career is over, our young guns will be ready to step in and get the job done. However, it is very unlikely that the Bruins will not resign him before he becomes a UFA.

I agree with this heartily. Nick retiring will definitely leave a gap, but I don't think that means we should try at all costs to fill that gap exactly. As many have pointed out, there's really no "replacing" Nick; so I think there may be more shuffling to build other strengths, and solidify the defense rather than just trying to find a snap-in part to play Lidstrom v2.0. Babcock, Holland et al. will have to make that call, and decide how to fill the gap. Maybe they will choose to give up prospects. That approach just makes me uncomfortable, though, and I hope it doesn't come to that.

As much as I'd like to see Jovanovski here,he doesn't make the team much younger. No way Los Angeles let's Doughty go.Weber won't leave Nashville, especially after being named team captain.I think Tim Gleason would be a great addition.Hard hitter, plays solid on both ends.I wouldn't mind seeing Chara either.Brent Seabrook would look good in a Wings jersey.Someone mentioned Bogosian, wouldn't have a problem with that.Keith Yandle played well against us in the playoffs last year.

Its been my dream to see Doughty in a Wings uniform. He's my favorite non-Wing player and I'd be willing to part with Zetterberg if need be to get him here.

Hate to burst your bubble, but I don't think that Holland will trade a guy he gave a 12 year contract to and the future captain of the team

I'm not expecting him to in the least. Similarly, I'm not expecting Doughty to come to Detroit in the least. I do think Doughty's value to our team for the next decade would be greater than any player that we currently have, though.

I was suggesting the trade with my assumption that in 5 years Doughty will be the best player in the NHL, much like Lidstrom was for a large period of time. I know Tatar is intriguing, and I do think he will grow to be a good player, but in my mind Forward depth is far easier to replace then defensive. There will always be pure offensive talent in the draft/free agency, obviously not to the extent of Datsyuk or Zetterberg, but players who can score enough will be available.

Just my opinion though, feel free to disagree. If giving up Tatar and a ton of first rounders gets us the defensemen of the future, I'm all for it. Tatar is great, may even become an all-star, but I don't think he will ever be among the true elite. This is all obviously hypothetical though, as we all know LA won't let him leave for the time being.

Tatar is 19 and had a decent season in the AHL, Doughty at 20 already has een nominated for the Norris for god's sake. You guys are saying we shpuldn't give up Smith or Tatar for Doughty, thats jst dumb. Smith is older then Doughtyand hasn't even been in the AHL, Tatar is projecting to be a speedy Hudler and proably a 70 point guy. Doughty younger then Smith hasa norris nomination and an Olympic gold medal to his name. Its not like we're trading the farm away for a 30 year old, this is a guy who is the same age but has potential to e the est defenseman of his generation. I can't believe you wouldn't give up Tatar or Smith for him. It is much easier to find 70 point guys like Tatar in free agency then it is to find the soon to be est defenseman in the NHL.

Pretty much this ends much of any debate. Doughty on our blue line > All prospects we have right now. End of story.

I would (and essentially did) go a step farther and say Doughty on our blue line for the next decade > any player's contribution over the next decade in our system right now.

Ken Holland > Every single person on LGW. I put my faith in him and will stick by whatever decision he makes.

Exactly. I have no doubt that Tatar and Smith will both develop into solid NHL players, but at this point trading them away for a proven commodity would be totally acceptable. Smith may very well become an all-star, but Doughty already has shown potential to be the next Lidstrom.

Well of course, but just because he doesn't make a move doesn't mean he didn't want to. I understand what you're saying though, and seeing as all this thread is purely hypothetical anyways, it's fun to speculate trades LA would realistically entertain.

Easily. And that is in no ways disrepectful to any of our prospects. Tatar may become an elite winger, Smith a quality number one, but Doughty has already shown potential to have a HoF Career. Feel free to quote me on this, in 5 years Drew Doughty will be regarded as the best defensemen in the league baring injuries.

Yeah I know what you mean. Just out of curiousity, wasn't there some trade talk last season about Pitt trading Malkin for Doughty? I can't remember if it was just rumored or if there was something to that.

In terms of what LA would entertain for Doughty, I would assume that one of Datsyuk, Zetterberg, or Franzen would have to be thrown in plus a pick or prospect...or both

Brian Burke doesn't seem to think so lol

If I was Pittsburgh I would have done that deal.

I doubt LA would though, or want Zetterberg/Datsyuk for us as their needs would be defensive relief for the void left by Doughty. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are both great players, but LA already had a ton of young talented forwards, maybe not as good as the Euro Twins, but good enough to be cup contending in a year or two. Malkin may have been a different story since his age, but seeing as both Z and Dats are over 30 now they most probably would want something else in return. Any deal that would pique the King's interest would presumably include a Solid youngish defensemen and a lot of potential for the future. I wouldn't be suprised or upset if we had to ship Kronwall and Ericcsson as well as a few 1sts to get him.

He is going to be a stud no doubt, but its not worth it to dismantle the team to get him.

Are you referring to the Datsyuk/Zettberg suggestion by another poster, or mine of Kronwall and Ericcsson. I hardly feel that trading Kronwall, Ericcsson and a plethora of prospects/picks would be dismantling the team.

Edit: Before I get misquoted here, I have never said that I think Doughty should be Holland's first option. I would actually prefer a Chara signing, as it is both more plausible and will let us retain other assets. I have just been answering people's questions about what I feel to be realistic trade proposals that would be needed to obtain a player like Doughty. We all know neither of these will happen, but what the hell, its the offseason.

So you're thinking

To Det: To L.A.

Doughty Kronwall

Ericsson

2011 1st Rd Draft Pick

The would probably either want one of the following: more picks, a prospect, or a roster player (more than likely Hudler, Cleary, or Filppula).

When you actually look at that though, I feel like we are giving too much for Doughty. However, that is just my opinion

More like Kronwall + Hank/Mule + a good handful of prospects/picks. It would have to be something like the Lindros deal, or even more since Doughty actually plays, and is probably a better prospect.

We could probably offer every prospect in our system and every one of our draft picks next year and LA would say, 'No thanks'. I suppose we can hope for a slump next year to drive his value down, but right now he's looking like the most valuable commodity in the league. Anchor defensemen who can play every situation have passed goalies/top centers as the key to team building, IMO. Nick saw to that.

I never said that. They would easily want more picks. I was thinking Kronwall+Ericcsson + 3 First rounders (or substitute one first rounder with a prospect), or the previous example with Kronwall Tatar and 3 first rounders. I agree that that would be a heavy price to pay, but in the end, I think Doughty would be worth it. He is the future number one defensemen in the league in my eyes.

Possibly. Burke seems to think he has already turned into the defensemen he will always be. I don't know if thats true. He could have been pulling some Jedi Mind trick stuff seeing how it was a few days before the draft.

Kevin Bieksa would be a solid pickup for Detroit. Is this Rafalski's last year of his contract too?

I'm pretty sure Bieska is available now via trade. Vancouver has a backlog of Dmen and need to shed some salary before the start of next season. Salo being injured long term helps a bit but they still need to free up some $. Just to be clear though, I'm not saying I approve of him coming here.

In the end it will probably be more of a D by committee thing than find one high end superstar to replace him.

Most of the Wings' players that are any good are ten or so years older than Doughty. The ones that aren't are markedly inferior. And the Wings' draft picks are almost always in the bottom ten. They have virtually nothing LA wants.

Chara is probably the best option for the next 3-4 years if he doesn't re-sign with Boston. He's not as good as Lidstrom in nearly any category, except he's a bigger and better hitter, but even in that Chara underutilizes his massive frame. But short of witchcraft I don't think they could get their hands on anyone better.
