Doc Holliday 1,888 Report post Posted August 2, 2010 (edited) I bet Canadiens fans would welcome him back. The crowd at the Bell Centre constantly chanted his name, especially after he fought. Probably because he was such a tease in Montreal when it came to fighting. Edited August 2, 2010 by Doc Holliday 1 Zeowingsfan reacted to this

titanium2 867 Report post Posted August 3, 2010 If Williams and Maltby can make the team, why can't Downey? He at least gives us something that we don't already have. What did those players add to the team last year? Williams at least provided an incredibly easy scapegoat. 1 55fan reacted to this

redwingfan19 293 Report post Posted August 10, 2010 kinda hope miller and ritola can fetch something in a trade.... abby/helm/eaves draper/downey rotating in and out of the lineup. draper for injuries, and downey for when we play teams like vancouver and the ducks. with miller and ritolla gone, if there are injuries we can call up tatar/mursak etc and let them get their feet wet. but that is just me. 1 hookah reacted to this
titanium2 867 Report post Posted August 10, 2010 I guess Kenny and Jimmy Nill really believe Abdelkader is the next Dallas Drake or something. Seems like they want Draper and Ritola as the reserve forwards. Hopefully Abs can keep the flies off.

Seems like they want Draper and Ritola as the reserve forwards. Hopefully Abs can keep the flies off. I don't see why Abby couldn't be. Their styles are extremely similar. Abby is just as hard of a hitter, will probably put up 40 points a season in his prime and I think Abby will start fighting more. I wouldn't be surprised to see 10 fights from him this season. I like what an above poster said for a lineup IF Downey comes back slightly improved at least. Have a bottom line of Abby Helm Eaves. Trade Miller and Ritola and Meech. Then we have Draper rotating in and out of the lineup and Downey on a league minimum contract getting in for some of the tougher games/injuries. What I wouldn't mind seeing is Tardif get some time as the 13th/14th forward. He can fight and is probably better at hockey then Downey. He's also homegrown. I think he should at least get some games this upcoming season.
cjm502 165 Report post Posted August 10, 2010 Tardif tries to fight, and he does it at good times and sticks up for guys buy he gets his s*** rocked 90% of the time.

newfy 695 Report post Posted August 10, 2010 Tardif tries to fight, and he does it at good times and sticks up for guys buy he gets his s*** rocked 90% of the time. Yeah but hes a solid middleweight and can throw a big hit. I think its worth him getting a shot with the big club, he is also a pretty solid PK guy. I dunno I don't see him being any worse of a player then someone like May or Downey the last couple years.

I agree with this. While I would like to see Ritola in the NHL for the Wings, it seems that Mursak and Tatar have better potential. Therefore, Draper and Downey could sit and be used regularly and someone could be called up in the event of a long-term injury. If Ritola were the 13th forward I would keep him, but Draper is ahead of him. If the Wings are going to have a ~30 game player, I would rather it be Downey than Ritola. I know, i've said this time and time again, but i'll be fine with Abdelkader fighting, as long as he ditches the helmet before the fight. Fighting with a visor on is a big no-no in my book. Fighting with a visor on is a big no-no in my book. If Abby is full time in the NHL this season which he will be then he might lose the visor completely. I don't blame him for wearing one last year since you have to in the AHL and it would make no sense trying to get used to it in the NHL when you might be sent down at anytime and have to put the visor back on. I would rather have Ritola get his chance than let Downey watch from the presser 3/4 of the season. The wings need to find out if they are going to get any return on Ritola and if not trying to get something for him, and if they do pass on him theres still miller sitting ahead of him on the depth chart. Bringing Downey to camp I truly believe serves a three fold purpose #1 being that he can teach some toughness to the kids, #2 Provides some competition for ice time/roster spot (never hurts to lite a fire under kids' asses to get the best out of them) and finally #3 a nod to him as a person, I think both the Wings management and Downey know hes not going to make the team, but, being the class acts Downey and the wings are, hes been given an invite.
