Mike Modano signs with Detroit

So when he's done as a player, he comes to Detroit who welcome him wiht both arms. We fell in love with the idea of the past Modano, not the washed up one of 2010.

Washed up? The Stars were washed up, not Modano. At 40, he's certainly not the player he once was but he's a far cry from washed up. The guy can still fly out there and even in a rather awful Dallas situation with minimal minutes, a weak supporting cast and backroom difficulties, he put up descent numbers.

In Detroit, he's getting a hometown hero's welcome, he's got a great organization that has already gone above and beyond to make him feel welcome and wanted, he's got a great surrounding cast of players and he's going to be working in a system and in a role that suits his style as well as his age. He's not going to have to carry anyone. He's only going to be adding to an already solid core, and he'll add a lot, no doubt.

Just like Bertuzzi last year, he may not be the same player he once was, but at that $1.25-1.5 million price tag, he's an absolute bargain. I'll go out on a limb and say that I have little to no doubt that you won't feel the same way about this signing by the end of the season. If he stays fairly healthy and plays say 70-75 games, I think he's fully capable of scoring 20-25 goals and putting up 50 points. I think 40 points is a given on this team. It's tough to find guys that can put up 40-50 points for $1.25 million, let alone guys with the kind of experience Modano has, not to mention the fact that he's already creating a buzz that's going to lead to merch sales and more people in seats. These days, that matters too.

I'M THRILLED!!!!!!!!!!

No, we're in love with the idea of having the highest scoring American born player in NHL history, centering our third line, being good defensively, scoring 20 goals and getting around 50 points, something that "washed up" Modano has been doing for the last few years on a lousy Stars team. No one here expects him to play like he did in 1994. 20 goals, 30 assists is fine with me. You're not going to find that kind of production on any other teams third line.

Yep. Echoing my thoughts. Can't say it enough, $1.25 million.

WE PAID JASON WILLIAMS $1.5 MILLION LAST YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By seasons end, this will look like a HUGE bargain.

williams sucks epically. modano...well, 30 pts last year in 59 games on the 3rd line in dallas playing with slugs. career: 1459 games, 557g, 802a - 1359 pts. same role as hull and robitaille had in '02. i'll take that and run with it for a 1.25mil cap hit. welcome aboard mike. have fun with all of the wings 3rd line exceeding 20 goals this year. but i guess haters gonna hate.

I am very happy Mikey Mo is Red Wing. It somehow feels right, the way it did with Dom, Brett and Luc. I like the way this is trending... besides, he's a great guy and a truly great player - no denying that. I believe Detroit will be a tonic for him and he will be amazing this season.

Who wouldn't want to wear the winged wheel and work with a club like the Wings? Welcome to Detroit, Mike.

I'm with Aussie Wing on this one. He'd better do everything up to and including walk on water to impress me. Otherwise, I'll still believe it was a waste of money.

Modano to wear either #89 or 90

"Also of extremely important note: Modano says that he has not ruled out playing for the Red Wings for more than one season".

I wasn't one to constantly dog on Williams on here, but this is a Check and Mate post if there ever was one.

Williams did butkus here last season, both Bertuzzi and Modano are steals considering salaries, and both are better than Williams even at the closing of their careers.

If you don't want Modano here because he's close to retirement and you think he's holding back roster spots from younger guys, cool, that's fine. I strongly disagree with you there, but I see your point.

No wanting him becuase you think he's washed up and useless and provides no production is extremely ridiculous when his numbers and output proves otherwise.

Just a note. Prior to signing here, Williams scored 19g/47p in 80 games for Atlanta/Columbus. The year before he scored 13g/36p in 43 games for Chicago. More goals and points in fewer games than Modano his last two seasons. He was looking pretty good until the injury, and he never really got back into it after he came back.

Williams turning out poorly doesn't automatically make Modano a good signing. Modano's performance this year will determine that. For now it looks good, but so did Williams at the time.

Right right.

At the time of Williams coming back for a 2nd stint here, it was a decent signing and kinda an emergency one to try to replace some offense the year before with Hossa and Hudler leaving. He wasn't going to replace all of it obviously, but hopefully some.

And he barely did a thing unfortuantely and just regressed further and further as the season went on (and was injured some).

Does he get an unfair rap? Some, but he didn't help his cause much, if at all.

I don't blame management for re-signing him at the time, they did the best they could with what was given/options available. Sometimes they don't work out, that's life and business sometimes.

Well if your expectations are unrealistic, guess what....you're gonna be disappointed.

Based on his price tag, Modano will blow *realistic* expectations out of the water. Grab some popcorn, that third line is gonna entertain all season long!

a washed up modano will generate more pts on the 3rd line than darren helm would this year. that's all that matters.

BINGO!! I think people tend to over estimate what kind of points guys like Abdelkader/Helm/Eaves/Miller are going to get. I like all of those guys but if you think any will have the offensive output of Modano you are dreaming. These 4 guys are role players not point getters. All 4 are great system players but the only one with any kind of offensive upside might be Abdelkader but why not go for a shot at the cup with a better offensive player in Modano?!?!?

Really? Your saying he has to be Paval Datsyuk to impress you? come on now. The guy is 40 years old, the best American player of all time, and still has hockey left in him according to KEN HOLLAND, MIKE BABCOCK, and MIKE MODANO. He is better now then Darren Helm will ever be. The guy makes our third line a legit scoring threat. 1.25 for a player of his caliber is far from a waist of money... Who else did you want with that money?

I'm not convinced. Why don't I want him? He doesn't strike me as the type who will be willing to drop his ego at the door, he is in it for the money only, and I just don't like his attitude. The world does not revolve around him. Now if you think you can convince me otherwise, good luck. I'm gonna be extremely critical of him. I want to see him sacrificing his body out there every shift, every night. Block shots, hit people who get in his way, fight for his teammates...everything. Leave your ass out on that ice every night - then I might be convinced. But don't bet on it.

Nobody was ever saying or implying that the world revolved around him.

In it for the money?!?!? Did you want him to play for free? He's worth about $3 mill a year with his stats. He wasn't near that and is playing with an incentive laiden contract. Sounds to me like he already left the ego at the door and wants to prove he can fit in on the 3rd line. I think you have read too many newspaper articles and drew your conclusion before he even signed. His signing makes our 3rd line one of the best (if not the best) in the league.

He's in it for the money making 1.25 million? Give your head a shake, eesh. I think you have this preconceived notion of Mike Modano in your head, and so you're going to be anti-Modano regardless. I highly doubt Modano is going to throw a ton of hits, block shots or fight... he never really has. Modano is coming to Detroit to provide scoring depth. It's like you're just aiming at his all of his weak traits so you can find a reason to criticize the guy. If Mike Modano has a 20-20 season at 1.25 million... that's huge. When that happens I hope you'll at least acknowledge that he was a positive for the team.

Maybe I'm alone in this statement but for some people here, this signing seems to be going over worse than the Bertuzzi signing last year. Welcome to Mo(dano)town!

No kidding.

If you don't want somebody to be on the team or roster, give reasoning that makes sense. A lot of the reasoning for not wanting him here for the ones that don't want him seem to just be of personal vendettas, or broad paintbrush assumptions that he's too old or whatever.

He still produces given his age for the most part.

He's certainly a steal at just over a million given he can still produce on a decent basis.

He's even more of a steal than Bertuzzi's salary at present and I think he could probably produce more than Bertuzzi.

And I'm not sure I'm following that he is a lazy player or whatever. I didn't follow him in-depth in Dallas, but I'm just not sure what basis there is for that. It doesn't seem to make too much sense.
