so wait, with a 2 way we can keep him in the minors all year, until playoffs if needed?

We could do that with a 1-way contract too. A 2-way contract only means that a player gets paid different salaries in the NHL and AHL. Maltby will have to clear waivers to be assigned to GR, and if they recall him during the season, he'll be subject to re-entry waivers as well.

From the Free Press article:

That'll mean being sent to Grand Rapids, which isn't appealing to a veteran of 1,072 NHL games, 908 of them since he joined the Wings on March 20, 1996. Maltby, a four-time Stanley Cup champion in Detroit, will have to weigh whether he wants to stay in the area or see if another team is interested. His agent, Anton Thun, did not respond to messages seeking comment.

"We'd like to find a way to get him to camp, then sort it out there," Holland said.

A two-way contract would mean the Wings could recall Maltby, 37, at any point during the season, and so long as his stint is shorter than 10 games or 30 days, he can be sent back to the minors without going through waivers again (he would have to do so the first time).

A one-way contract would almost guarantee Maltby would be in Grand Rapids all season, because if the Wings called him up he'd have to go through waivers. That would open him up to being claimed by another team, and under CBA rules, the Wings would be on the hook for 50% of his salary, which could be a problem under the salary cap.[/Quote]

It looks as though Holland wants to get as many forwards to camp and figure out who fits best. They have to have a contract for Maltby to get him to camp.

Maybe he'd rather stay near home (as opposed to moving to another state) and play with the GR kids where he can be "the Man" and show them a thing or two. Then he can be a Black Ace for the playoffs. IfWhen we make it to the finals, he can hop in for an injured player for at least one game, still get his name on the Cup and retire with his good buddy Drapes.

Or maybe he has just been a Wing for so long that it would be icky to be anything else.

McCarty ended his career in GR and I don't think any less of him.

I'd be surprised if Maltby got five games with the Wings this year, and I'd be equally surprised if he played top six in GR. The AHL is where you go if you don't want to stop playing hockey and that competitive fire still burns. I could see him assuming a role as an ass't coach of some sort with the Griffins.

I don't see him wearing a suit every day and punching the clock as the fifteenth "assistant GM" in Detroit to get up into NHL management somewhere else. I see him as a junior coach in a couple of years and moving his way up to an NHl assistant's position a few years after that. I think he scored 50 in junior one year, didn't he? ;)

San Jose wanted Maltby back in June and he was seriously considering it. As much as it would suck for him to retire as something other than a Wing, I think it would be great if he can play for another team and have a good role there. Glad we'll finally know what's going on soon.

if he still wants to play, enjoys a paycheck, and doesn't want to move, than why retire?

he would be an idiot to just retire if he cant be "on" the wings.

if i am still desired in my world....i keep going.

take what you can get. f*** what the fans think. do what you need to do to be happy.

go malts....

i enjoy the wings because of the loyalty, not despite it.

the wings can't win the cup every year, but they can be considered the greatest franchise to play for every year, and that brings championships.

loyalty is something our favorite team has nailed down...now why don't WE embrace that same mentality?
