Tomas Kaberle's no-trade clause has kicked back in, meaning trade speculation involving him is over....for a couple days, anyways.

Leafs sporting 8 NHL defencemen (Or 7, plus Jeff Finger) heading into camp...

  1. Dion Phaneuf
  2. Mike Komisarek
  3. Tomas Kaberle
  4. Luke Schenn
  5. Francois Beauchemin
  6. Carl Gunnarsson
  7. Brett Lebda
  8. Jeff Finger

Plus younger players like Korbinian Holzer and Keith Aulie.

You mean 6 plus Jeff Finger and a pylon... I mean, Brett Lebda

That's actually a pretty damn good top 5 and Gunnarsson isn't a slouch either and is still developing... I still can't believe they signed Lebda and for that price, that was EASILY one of the worst signings of the off-season and they will regret it BIG time when he's in the press box, eating up cap...

Don't underrate Gunnarsson. He was better than most of those guys last year at times. Steady and reliable. He's got that Swedish poise.

Regardless of who they trade, the Leafs have a great defensive unit. Hopefully they can move Lebda and pick up some scoring before the season starts.

Lebda appears to be press-box bound at this point, though somebody is bound to get hurt.

Not trading Kaberle has certainly opened up a spot in the top-six for Kadri.

Do you know which defensemen (if any) the Leafs are going to try to trade now? I followed the Leafs a bit last year (watched ~30 of the games), and I'd like to see them contend for a playoff spot as they're one of the few teams in the East I like. The East will be fun to watch this year (especially the Atlantic) as the arms race (enforcers) this summer was ridiculous.

I really don't see them trading any of them right now. I think Kaberle gets shopped at the deadline and this whole fiasco starts up again.

Komisarek, Beauchemin really aren't worth trading because of the money they are owed. Kaberle is obvious. Lebda just got here. Schenn & Gunnarsson are too young to trade unless you get an offer you can't refuse. Phaneuf is the captain. Finger is an anchor and is probably bound for the AHL.

kaberle didn't get moved because he only has 1 year left on his contract and it's open season with the UFA anyways. if a team trades toronto a 1st rounder and a good player and kaberle doesn't sign with them after the season, then they've wasted potential for a guy that's not gonna put them over the top as contenders most likely anyways.

good job by the other GM's not blowing their wad on kaberle.

Strong defence, good goalies, weak forwards. Bozak, Kadri, Kessel, Versteeg, Kulemin, Grabovski? Not a very good top6, is Burke looking at making any other moves Mack? Dont think he's quite satisfied yet.

I really have no idea. Kaberle was the one expendable asset Burke had to get another forward, so I have no clue what the next move is, if there is one.

Free agent pickings are pretty slim.

I'm pretty shocked he wasn't traded actually. I think Burke dropped the ball, he gambled at high stakes, lost, and now he has to try and save face.

Kaberle could walk at the end of the season for nothing (and I think that's more likely than him re-signing). Hopefully T-Kabs OK's a deadline deal, signs an extension (which would require someone like Komisarek be moved you would think) or it's going to hit the fan in Leaf Nation.

yup, pretty much what i was getting at. burke wants too much for kaberle and he's gonna get nothing when he walks as a UFA next summer. burke was offered ryan malone, and he was offered a 1st and some D prospect by the sharks apparently. personally, i would have taken the D prospect and a 1st rounder and got kaberle off the books. yzerman wants to get rid of malone and his salary that feaster did before he got canned so he would have atleast traded salaries and had kaberle's off the books to either let him walk or sign a new deal. either way, leafs fans are gonna be pissed if they get nothing at all for him.

Was it ever confirmed that Burke got those offers? I thought it was just the usual B.S. on blogs and Twitter.

I would rather lose Kaberle for nothing than take on Ryan Malone's contract.

From TSN :

"While a number of clubs made offers to trade for Tomas, none of them reflected Tomas's value to our team," Leafs general manager Brian Burke said in a statement. "I understand a period like this is stressful to the player, and we are pleased that there is a resolution, and we can all continue to prepare for the coming season."

I think Grabovski is still being shopped around. The defense is stellar. No reason to trade Bauchemin or Komisarek. Burke seems to like Schenn. The defense situation will be interesting. Burke seems to be looking for a top 6 forward with a bit of an edge, and that's what he was after when negotiating a potential Kaberle deal.

This protracted saga is the number one reason I thank God the Burke isn't our GM. Imagine Kenny pulling this kind of crap with, say, Franzen? Never happen in a million years. Kaberle doesn't deserve the soap opera Burke and the Toronto media are putting him through.

finger over lebda

Worst porno ever.
