Mike Babcock impressed with several young players during Red Wings prospects tournament

DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said he was impressed by several players during the club's prospects tournament in Traverse City.

He mentioned defensemen Brendan Smith and Brian Lashoff and forwards Tomas Tatar and Joakim Andersson.

The Smith kids impressive,'' Babcock said. "Hes got to clean up some of the details of his game, but hes very impressive.

"Tatar is like Huds (Jiri Hudler), flat out the puck follows him around. The Andersson kid is going to play in the league. Hes big, hes heavy, he knows how to play with and without the puck. They always said he couldnt skate. I cant tell that. He looks like a fine skater to me.

Tatar was really good. And he's one of the younger prospects out of players. Lashoff sounds like a beast. Sounds like a 'Stuart' type guy. Smith was relatively quiet and didn't score but one assist. Good to hear about Andersson. I am really high on Nestrasil, but by looking at his stats, looks like he had a brutal tourney.

Things that stand out to me is (aside from the Minny game), the RW prospect team was high scoring with a low GAA. It sounds like nobody outside of Tatar was a 'star' player, but rather they all played a mature and smart game to win. The team went 2-1-1 and was tied for 3rd best. Not bad imo. Tatar is looking like he's the real deal. Lashoff sounds like he's going to be a solid top 4 someday.

Anyone know what happend with Ryan Oulahen? He was very promising, then had a serious injury but shouldn't he be back by now?

McGrath signed for second tier team VIK (Lidstroms old club) btw...

I haven't kept up to date with the team lately, but I am happy to hear that some of the young guys I was high on have been playing well. Tatar sounds like he just has major skills, and will be an exciting player for us. Smith has all the skill and poise in the world, so it's great to hear that he is looking better. He and Kindl coming into the rotation in the next couple of years will be a big boost. As for Andersson, I've been interested in this kid for a while. He has the size and a solid all-around game, and from the original post, it seems that he has improved his skating too. I agree with the Franzen comparison, and I hope that he continues to grow and add that offensive touch to his game like Franzen did.

that sounds pretty good. the wings future is always bright. i really wish that nyquist could have made the rookie camp. him and tatar may be on a line together in a couple years on the wings. i heard somewhere that nyquist got a comparison to zetterberg who happens to be my favorite player, so i'm really interested to see some more of this kid. hopefully we get to see alot of video on sheahan this year too. sounds like a good sized kid with skill.

I agree with the Nyquist talk. I am VERY excited to see he and Tatar develop. If Sheahan develops like we all hope he will, those three may form our first or second line in a few years.

I like this idea quite a bit. Might be a little bit for Sheahan to catch up with these two guys, but we'll see. I could see maybe Mursak playing on a right wing with them until Sheahan develops.

Tatar-Nyquist-Sheahan/Mursak

I'm happy to hear that Babcock is high on Andersson. I've liked him for quite some time, and I think he could turn into a pretty effective third line center if he can boost his offensive production a bit. Glad to hear he's high on Smith too.

I, for one, am very, very excited about this next crop of young stars! - Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan, Smith, Kindl, etc. It seems like we're really starting to pull away from the rest of the NHL in the salary cap era with our superior scouting (braintrust).

Amazing how much talent is just sitting in the system, ready to come up. I like those lines already!

era 2 - hudler-filppula-franzen...ericsson-kindl

era 3 - tatar-nyquist-sheahan...smith-lashoff

:)
