Chicago Blackhawks are putting pizza ads on their practice jerseys. Seems like it will only go downhill from here, especially because of this comment:

Here's the official NHL line on jersey ad sales, via deputy commissioner Bill Daly in a Q&A/speech in Washington, D.C. last weekend:

"With regard to ads on uniforms, the whole business area of sports evolves over time. People in this room probably remember a time when there was no advertising on dasher boards, and now there is. So things change.

"We have not taken the step of allowing clubs to advertise on their game uniforms at this point. We did enact a new policy -- and I do think we're a little behind the other sports leagues in doing this -- to allow clubs to sell advertising on their practice jerseys.

"But we are not actively considering changing that rule, at least at this point. But who knows what the future might hold."

I guess a team that sold out all their home games in a 22,000+ arena and won the Stanley Cup, has to find some way to make a profit. Maybe they'll put a Little Ceasars add on their sweaters.

I'm kind of surprised they have enough people attending their practices to get advertisers just for that.

Maybe they feel the captive market of 23 with a collective income of $57M is enough. Them boys gotta eat after practice.

Toews : "Good practice guys. Anyone hungry?"

Keith : "Yeah, for some reason I'm really craving pizza. Let's all go get some, except Hossa, he really sucked today."

Hossa : "Maybe 'boo' in Slavak mean 'Marion gets Cheese and Pepperoni".

I had a huge problem with this until I saw that it was for Giordano's Pizza.

Holy f***, that is the BEST pizza!!!

Giordano's is good, but it didn't wow me when I had it. It's the same as Pizzapopolis. I know I'm going to get pounced on by the Blackhawks lurkers for that comment.

If I want pizza, it's Buddy's for me, or that awesome Tomatoes Apizza place in Farmington for some delicious thin crust. Nikki's is awesome too. Now I'm hungry... :pizza:

Did you get their stuffed cheese? Their regular pizza is just okay, but the stuffed cheese is my favorite.

Not a NY pizza guy, so I don't see Jersey changing my mind...

I can respect that.

I had Chicago-style pizza once when I was out there in 2004 and while it was good, it was just too heavy for me, almost more of a novelty. That said, I probably didn't get it from the right place anyway. And I've gotten enough bad pizzas out here in Jersey too, so I'm just thankful I've found a local place that kicks ass and knows how I like my pie.

(Are we off topic?)

f*** YOU CHICAGO, YOU RUIN EVERYTHING!!

I hope to god that this doesn't spread (but if it gets somebody money then you know damn right that it's gonna), watching the NHL is very easy on the eyes... just players, their names, their teams logos, and ice. I hope this doesn't end up like that s*** in Europe

if we disgrace the winged wheel with some bulls*** like that I will be PISSED

What did their core have to say about this?

The best pizza is from Ai Marmi in Trastevere. Fact.

Edited in order to stay on topic:

I don't see this becoming a widespread trend. Not with a revenue-sharing system in place...

all they are are novelties, and anyways most places around lake/cook counties don't even have deep dish, it is just a gimmick that places like uno get away with

This!

I live in Chicago now, and while deep dish has its place, I grew up in New York and you simply cannot beat that style of 'za.

I do not like ads on jerseys, ESPECIALLY an original 6 jersey. This thread makes me hungry.

Ads on the boards, jumbotron, above the trough, whatever. Those don't bother me. You kind of expect every square inch of an arena to be littered with advertising. However, messing with the jerseys is a surefire way to get people to stop supporting the NHL in droves. I know this is only a practice jersey, but those slopes tend to be slippery when the commissioner has $$$ in his eyes.

To be fair advertising on jerseys alone is unlikely to put people off watching hockey. Over here in Europe the amount of adverts squeezed onto jerseys, socks, helmets, hell even the goal posts, is ridiculous but attendences in some European leagues is pretty good. Not NHL levels, after all hockey over here has to compete with the dominating presense of soccer for fans, but pretty decent levels nonetheless.

Would I want to see adverts on Red Wings jerseys? Definately not, but lets not be fooled into thinking what we think really has any relevance.

As an aside though NHL players already have plenty of adverts on their playing kit, whether that be the Reebok branded jerseys, the Bauer/Warrior etc branded gloves, very obviously branded sticks or Vaughn pads sported by Jimmy Howard. Do you think all hockey players pay going rate for their kit or do you reckon there might be some sort of discount for using certain makes?

Ok, you're probably right...

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case. Free equipment for an on-ice endorsement is pretty cheap advertising.

As for Reebok and Bauer adverts on equipment, doesn't bother me as much because its related to the product. Its different than having a BP ad across your helmet.
