According to a tweet by Michael Russo (Minneapolis Star-Tribune), it wasn't a kid or even a teen:

@russostrib

yeah, that confirms this guy is a douchebag. he is a grown man and instantly resorts to lawyers. what a fricking coward. regardless of what the law says, dude was not harmed. the law needs to change apparently.

We ALL have different interps of the law. Personally, going 5mph or 5KPH over the speed limit isn't speeding in MY eyes, but for the law it is. Let's just hope that the fan doesn't sue Rypien in civil court, that's where he can get emotional distress and other legalities against him and the team(both) and the arena.

I'm with ya on that. Its just laughable to sue someone for grabbing your shirt in MY eyes.

Okay, we do agree on this. I still think Rypien assaulted him, no matter which way you cut it, in the eyes of the law he was assaulted. And I still think Rypien should be dealt with accordingly.

BUT, this guy, whom I thought was a teenager, has lost some points in my book. Dude, you've got an awesome story, you weren't hurt, take the free tickets I am sure you were offered and run. How ******* typical we are, the FIRST thing we do is run to the laywers to sue for millions. I hope if a case is brought up it gets thrown out, no grounds.

How many people get to say they went face to face with an NHL Tough Guy? I'd take the tickets and free food!

yeah, we are probably 95% in agreement. i have no problem with a suspension as long as its reasonable. my only complaint with all this is they are making way too big of a deal. if what rypien did was 'assault' then the law needs to change. what rypien did was wrong; however it was pretty inconsequential and trivial.

i have a feeling this guy is going to turn out to be a class A idiot. He will claim to be such a loyal hockey fan only to turn around and attempt to sue his own Wild, the NHL, Canucks and Rypien.

While a TRUE hockey fan would expect a round of drinks from his buds while talking about how awesome it was.

Absolutely 100% agreed.

Have to agree with some of the comments, I think it's very cheesy for "the victim" to try and immediately cash in on this. Yes it was inappropriate, but nothing came of it, he should laugh it off.

I guess we should be thankful the fan wasn't black, otherwise Rypien would be looking at a hate crime and jail time..

Hate crimes go from fifth degree down to at least 3rd degree and a felony, yikes! Maybe it was afterall, maybe Rypien attacked him because he was American? Lol.

Engquist said he didn't receive an apology from the league, Rypien or the Canucks. He said he hasn't heard anything from the Wild.

That's messed up.

He's a great article for all you "pro-shaking" people.

Spector

Let’s face it: I shake a margarita harder than Rick Rypien shook that fan in Minny on Monday night.
“I can see why he did it,” said an NHL player Monday. “I’m not saying it’s right, but I can see why.”
“It’s like being a caged animal,” said a sympathetic Oilers heavyweight Steve McIntyre. “If somebody keeps poking you with a stick, you’ll take a bite out of his arm.”
In fact, depending on which television broadcast you were watching, it was hard to discern who was at fault Monday night. The two accounts of the incident were wholly opposite:

Minnesota announcer: “That’s going to be suspendable right there. When you start mixing it up with the fans, that’s when it’s going to get ugly.”

Vancouver announcer: “Where's the security there? You can’t have the fans reaching over (the railing). You paid your tickets to watch the game not to be part of the game. That guy’s got to go. Sorry.”

Minnesota announcers, upon seeing the replay: “That fan should not have been kicked out of his seat. He did nothing. He shouldn’t be ejected. They should move him up to a suite.”

“I just think the fan got a little bit too involved,” Malhotra said immediately after the game Tuesday, where Rypien reached into the stands, grabbed a clapping fan with both fists, and gave him a momentary shake. “There's just no place for that in our game.”

Remember that, Canucks fans. No more clapping. And never stand.

The fan wasn't wrong standing and clapping..Its unfortunate Rypien reacted the way he did. You pay big bucks to sit behind the benches. Security shouldn't have to be everywhere. Players should have more control than Rypien did, but at the same time, he JUST grabbed the guy's shirt. Nothing major at all. 5 game suspension seems adequate. Not too harsh, but sends the message that no matter how subtle, physical contact with fans can't happen.

While I agree that Rypien was an idiot for doing what he did, the fan is being an absolute child about this. I had some compassion for him when I thought it was a teenager, but knowing that he's 28 and trying to squeeze this for all it's worth is just pathetic.

It's hard to put yourself in his position, but I'd like to think that I would wait for the club to call me and address it. Give me a jersey, some tickets, and a few beers and we're even.

If I got tickets and a free beer card for life at the Joe for being grabbed by, let's say, Clutterbuck/Ott or something, I would deem that an ultimate dream.

LOL! Reminds me of the Duncan Keith/fan incident, at least Keith had a great sense of humor.

That was Sullivan, not Keith.

Nothing quite like taking advantage of our legal system.

Yeah, no joke. I teach CPR/FA/AED; our legal system necessitates laws to protect first responders (those who do CPR/FA/AED, etc., and aren't paid) from personal injury lawyers. Our legal system makes it easy to go after people for their money, and not necessarily because the defendants have actually done anything wrong.

Sorry, but that article seems to be a litany of hockey players claiming why they shouldn't be responsible for keeping their tempers.
