I never claimed you hated the fact that they were trying to improve Detroit, and I suggested that you might not deem what they're doing important - because you seemingly wrote them off as 'wannabe artists'. It wasn't a personal attack on you, as I'm sure there are plenty of people who would argue that what these people are doing isn't important in the grand scheme of things. When the city needs so much more than urban farming, restaurants, and an artist culture - it'd be easy to have that stance.

as far as the "wannabe artist" as i reflect on that statement, artists are artists, there really is no "wannabe" artist. If you create art, you are an artist. As most artists are, they are a "free spirited" type of person, which explains that video to a T and why it does not reflect the city of detroit.

Im not taking your posts as a personal attack, just stating my position. I really think you read way too much into my post. I watched the piece like 2 months ago and thats what i got from it. it just doesnt reflect the city of detroit.

http://urbantitan.com/10-most-dangerous-cities-on-the-world-in-2010/

Take a look at this list. Number 2 in the world! It don't think it is quite that high, but it is up there in crime and murder rate for sure. It is not selective journalism. It's not some tale. Detroit is a very dangerous city and to say otherwise is denying facts. I love Michigan as much as the next Michigander, but Detroit is an awful place. Maybe not as much in the downtown area by Greektown, Comerica, The Joe, etc., but Detroit is an enormous city with a lot of problems. Obviously once you get 30 minutes outside of Detroit, in the suburbs, It is one of the most beautiful places to live in the entire country.

Seriously. You don't have to believe everything you read. Number two in the entire world!?! s***... I put Flint and Pontiac ahead of Detroit in a heartbeat. Go hang out in the city a little before you post any more of this swill.

Honestly, the core downtown area of Detroit, from the Joe to the Ren Cen and from the river up to where Comerica Park is, its all pretty safe. I hang out downtown a lot, mostly at night, and have never felt threatened. Hell, I used to live in Midtown by Wayne State, and loved it.

Like most big cities, the more populated areas are fairly safe. Foxtown/Greektown/Joe/RenCen square area isn't too bad, and there's a lot of places in the suburbs that are worse. Though I wouldn't want to hang around Hart Plaza or Campus Martius at night (though there isn't any reason to anyway).

Eastern Market, Cass Corridor, the bridge area, Belle Ilse, any of the projects...those are places to avoid. Fortunately, there's no reason to go there at night unless you're looking for trouble.

The real problem with Detroit is that other than the casinos, there's nothing there that you can't find better, safer, and more convenient in terms of parking/cabs in the suburbs. I love SE Michigan, and hate the bad rap the city gets, but compared to say Royal Oak, Ann Arbor, or even most of western Wayne county, it does kind of suck.

One thing to note in that article posted. Not only is it an OPINION, it also says that the cities are listed in NO PARTICULAR ORDER.

I just wanted to point out one thing to keep into consideration, and it goes along with everyone else pointing out that all cities have their 'bad areas'. I too have grown up in the metro area, but you have to consider that when there are statistics about "Detroit", it's not necessarily just about the downtown area, it's the statistics of the whole of the city limits. That's a huge area.

I love downtown Detroit, I've been there countless times for many things and I know that it has an unnecessary bad rap, please don't get me wrong. BUT when you go to places like (cliche, but very true) Harpo's, you can without a doubt feel the "Detroit cliche". I have been there hundreds of times and I have never felt safe in that neighborhood, which is not downtown, miles out actually, but within the defined city limits. Just something to keep in mind.

I also agree that the statistics, regardless of all this, are very skewed compared to most other cities due to the diminished population in every square mile of the city limits and beyond.

All that said, writers that go out of the way to bash the city as an attack on our sports teams are completely irrational morons who don't have a clue what they're talking about.

I've never gone to Harpo's as I've never had a reason to, but I've heard nothing good about its surroundings.

Ya. Standing outside in line can feel a little dicey sometimes, but I've been there a hundred times and have never had an incident. Ever.

I've been back and forth through downtown countless times at all hours and never an incident. Granted, I don't go poking around the surrounding neighborhoods and avoid the alleys, but anyone with half a brain would do that in EVERY major city.

Don't we hear this same crap from Pitts-turd all the time too? While Chicago fans like to pretend the entire South Side and Gary, Indiana don't exist. It's just great irony every time.

You know, it used to be those kinds of city-bashing articles were reserved for the playoff series, (and usually done with a little humor) but in Edmonton's case, it's not seeming like they've got that to look forward to this year.

I was in Pittsburgh when the Steelers won the Super Bowl. Someone lighting a couch on fire in the street made the news. That's like a Saturday morning in East Lansing.

Killed by who though? Someone from the surrounding neighborhood or someone else at Harpo's? I've seen some crazy s*** go down inside Harpo's. Being inside with a crowd of skinheads can be a lot worse than anything going on outside.

I don't know if it's the same person or not, but I know that the original vocalist of the Exploding Zombies was shot in the parking lot at Harpo's.

I'm probably lucky nothing ever happened to me there. I would always get trashed off my ass inside and then decide I had to go to that Coney Island that's nearby (or was, I haven't been there in years) by myself...

Im from Calgary, AB. I don't know why I get this on my cable but the channel Im watching right now is detroit news on ABC 7. They just ran a segment on the article and interviewed the writer! I feel bad that some crappy article from the Edmonton sun has everyone so butt-hurt.

P.S. I hate going to Edmonton, the city is a dump

Was it the guy who was beaten to a bloody pulp at the Take Action tour?
