Jonas Siegel with a great piece on Kessel. Finally someone on in the media there pointing out the obvious. http://www.tsn.ca/talent/kessel-scorn-has-gone-too-far-1.207895

Kessel, for one, had no hand in the management failures of John Ferguson Jr., Cliff Fletcher, Brian Burke or Dave Nonis, which are at the real heart of a decade with just a single playoff appearance. Kessel didn’t botch draft picks, signings or trades. Nor did he fail behind the bench. Is Kessel a “coach killer” (as one publication described him) because management misallocated $36 million to David Clarkson or $23 million to Mike Komisarek? Or because that same group spoiled a compliance buyout on Mikhail Grabovski? Or because management, over the span of a decade, has been unable to replenish itself properly through the draft?

Looks like Maple Laffs acquired Olli "the great pumpkin head" Jokinen from predators, laffs are on their way to the top!

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Sunday that the team has acquired defenseman Cody Franson and forward Mike Santorelli from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Nashville’s first-round selection in the 2015 Draft, and forwards Brendan Leipsic and Olli Jokinen.

Preds got franson and santorelli for a 1st rd pick

Leipsic is a 20 year old prospect. Leading scoring in the WHL last year... Nothing to scoff at.

How we got to a first rounder and Santorelli in the mix...

I'm guessing it went down something like this:

Poille: "I've got a second round pick and Leipsic for Franson"

Nonis: "Well... we really want a first."

Poille: "I'm not giving you a first for a rental. What else can you do?"

Nonis: "Well, I'm not..."

Shanny: "Ok, David... How about Franson and Santorelli for the first and Leipsic?"

Nonis: "But Bren..."

Shanny: "Look Dave. Neither Cody nor Mike are gonna re-sign here, let's get that first round pick we need."

Nonis: ...

Poille: "Great. I can give you an expiring contract back if it'd make you feel better about this deal."

Nonis: "That sounds fair."

Poille: "Olli Jokinen"

Shanny: "...whatever..."

BTW. I wasn't trying to slight the guy, all I seen was the ticker before the full details came out that grandson and Santa went for a first.

I didn't even see jokinen was part of it until it was posted in the grandson to preds threads.

Did your phone change it to SANTA as well? Okay, that could be short for Santorelli... but autocorrect is such a nightmare.

Haha. Nahhh, the couple of leafs fans I reluctantly refer to as my "friends" call him Santa so often that I just started referring to him the same way.

But yeah that was a pretty effin good auto correct.

Usually it pisses me off but that one gave me a good laugh...

I wouldnt even have noticed it had e.t. not pointed it out.

Sorry for OT but that's the differense I've noticed after switching from my BB to Android too. Auto-correction has basically driven me insane especially if english isn't your native language because for whatever reason the two bigdogs (Swiftkey and Swype) decided it would be a good idea to have 2 language suggestions active at the *same* time ---> instead of just swiping left or right to activate them...Thanks to the handwriting feature of the S-Pen it's not as bad but man it has the potential to drive me insane.

Yeah I just turned swipe off, because its WAYYY worse with it on ha.

But back on topic.

I think tml fans deserve better. Sure.

But I'm glad they finally deserved to scorch earth rebuild.

It'll be nice not hearing them think they're the bees knees for about a month every year

I think their knowledgable fans really deserve better, the obvious "I jump on the players bandwagon when he's good but will give him hell if he makes a mistake" bandwagoners don't. Franson just talked about the whole pressure there, I mean having 30 guys in the room even after practice ? That's insane like freaking insane.

Also I'm not sure what Shanahan is doing there, they've acquired another cocky heavily undersized kid ind Leipsic...are they trying to become the smurfs ? Instead of such a hard hitting fun to watch in your face team, which made the playoffs and almost beat Boston with that type of game ?Personally I wouldn't trade for or draft anybody under at least ~ 190 lbs.

You wouldn't draft anyone under 190 lbs?

I'll stop and let you reevaluate that for a second

McDavid's off the table for you then. And Eichel, and pretty much most of young draft eligible players

Given where this team is and what we currently need no because we need size at the forward and especially back-end position.

Which doesn't mean I would pass on a can't miss prospect...but at let's say 25 I'd go size and physicality first.

Guys like McEichel are obviously can't miss prospects but in the later rounds or maybe even at around 15 if it's washup I'd go with size and local boys to make it easier for fans to identify themselves with the team. I mean look at Toronto they didn't draft a GTO player till the later rounds.

Scouting be damned. It's all about measurements and POB.

To be fair both McDavid and Eichel are at around 190lbs. But yeah, to never draft anyone under that mark is a little ridiculous...

Yeah, Actually Eichel's listed at 194. My bad. McDavid's 187. I thought I remembered them being listed at less a while ago. And, yeah, my point was that a size cutoff of 200lbs would exclude a lot of skill players especially since they would be young and could put pounds on later.

Shows their commitment both are already talked about as phenoms and they still keep working hard and adding muscle. When I've made my point a very important one got lost (intentionally?): given where this team is and what the needs are. I believe a power-forward is needed and while it's true players will put on mass a guy who is already 190 lbs + will still do the same and maybe turn into another Lucic, Bertuzzi..I'm sure teams like the Blues or LA would have other priorities because their teams are already at an average 200 lbs + level.

I also don't know why the concept of drafting a Michigan boy is questioned identification plays a huge part in fandom, so if the kid has the talent and may be only a bit worse than someone else drafting him makes sense in a lot of ways.

Anyway back to topic Siegel has mentioned the Wings here ( http://www.tsn.ca/shanahan-should-emulate-wings-in-rebuild-1.208987). I know, the new TSN layout sucks but I still haven't found a better site for hockey-news which is very unfortunate.

The Leafs drafted Luke Schenn with the fifth pick in the 2008 draft – trading up to do so – and had him in the NHL that fall as an 18-year-old. The Wings, by contrast, picked Gustav Nyquist with the 121st pick that year, making him a full-time player only this season.

"You see [Tomas] Tatar, [Gustav] Nyquist, they spend lot of time in the minors, they went in the minors, they paid their dues and they wait and they wait and now boom they're ready to come in," said Stephane Robidas, who contended with Detroit for years in the Western Conference. "It's not always their first rounders [either]."

Detroit believes in over-cooking its prospects. They would rather wait too long than move too quickly. Toronto hasn't shown near that kind of patience amid a revolving door of managers and strategies.

Back when the Leafs drafted Schenn he sadly is the perfect example of ill-advise and rushing him. Kid came in with great size and was a bruising well playing force then their management wanted him to put on too much muscle too quickly so he lost a stepped and never has been able to play and hit like he used to, which is sad.

But this article doesn't mention something very important overcooking can also lead to players wanting out, thanks god Tatar and Nyquist had the patience but not everyone will.
