If I'm watching a game that i recorded so it's not live, but it's the first time I'm watching it, and the game has already been completed, is it still bad luck to say things such as sh*tout or ov*rtime? I'm curious because I seem to watch a lot of not-live games and am wondering about etiquette. What do you guys think?

At that point, there's nothing left to jinx, so I'd say you'd be fine :P But I can't say anything, I'll hold onto superstitions watching replays or hell - classic games like replays of the '98 cup win. I would jump up and get excited when goals were scored and my husband looked at me like I was nuts. ("You do realize this game was played 8 1/2 years ago.. right? And that -nothing- you do or say will affect it? Why are you getting so excited? You know you won already." "Shut up!")

I can't record anything, or its a loss. Everytime. Never fails. I also must wear the same Jersey and Leather hat to the games.

I do that too, I never say the S word or the O word because I'm under the impression that "they" knew I would say that in the future which is why it/didn't happened. Haha, but seriously it's fun to joke around with superstitions, but obviously it doesn't affect the out come. You're free to say whatever you want. ^_^

No matter what or when, I'm superstitious about saying "shutout" during a game (unless we're trying to jinx the opposition goaltender).

Yep, and you must specify that you are jinxing that goalie. It's good to know there are enough of us that have our "crazy" superstitions. :P

I would assume that superstitions remain the same regardless of live or replay. As for one of my superstitions... I'm not supposed to watch the game in class... This term it was Thursdays, last term it was Tuesdays. They have yet to win a game if I'm supposed to be in class... but I don't take superstitions seriously so I watch anyway.

In my opinion, it's bad luck to say those words even if there isn't a game on.

Im EXACTLY the same way...if anyone around me says that word during a game it is a sure thing that the goalie it is said about will let in atleast one goal...usually not too long after it is said...it happens every single time...hell even if the announcers on tv mention it...ive seen it hundreds of times...by far my biggest superstition

At first I thought this was going to be a thread about what Superstitions people have.

I think it still should be.

I grow a playoff beard. If I have a girlfriend, that can really piss them off :) I can grow a pretty thick beard pretty fast.

I don't say words like sh#tout, unless it ends up happening. Then I will say it, but only for that day. Next morning, it's back to not saying it. I do say Hat Trick though, unfortunately, I think I jinxed Hank in the last game :( Sorry Hank!!!!!

I use to have a lucky Yzerman Jersey, that I wore every time there was a game. I couldn't wear it at work, but I carried it around with me anyway. We won the cup the year I had that, but a girl stole it from me. I don't have a lucky jersey now.

I want to buy a Datsyuk Jersey, but I refuse to do it until the season is over. Sometimes Jerseys are cursed. I don't want to buy one of the cursed one's by accident, while the season is going on. If it's cursed I won't be able to wear it.

I'm not all that superstitious of a person and in the end I know what I think has no effect in the outcome of a game, but I'm in the minority, it's something that is fun or serious for other fans, so I'm not going to say they are ridiculous and what not for it. I get it. Let them be if they think being superstitious helps out.

The only superstitious thing I hate is when people start chanting "We got the cup!" during a finals game before the game is over. I have proof that the superstition is justified!!!

1) 1997 finals - I was in high school, and had some friends over to watch the game. They all started chanting it while I was telling them to shut the hell up. Moments after they started chanting, Lindros scores, bringing the game within a goal of being tied with 20 or so seconds left to play.

2) 2008 finals - I was watching game 6 at a bar in Royal Oak, and the whole bar started chanting "We got the cup!" with 2 minutes left to play. 30 seconds later, Hossa scores a goal, bringing the game within a goal of being tied. Yeah, deja vu.

You don't ever ever ever call the cup before the game is over.
