The Mike Commodore Saga

A few days ago, the Columbus Post-Dispatch reported that Mike Commodore - tired of riding the pine - asked to be traded out of Columbus. Today the Post-Dispatch published the following article, where he's fairly critical of head coach Scott Arniel.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. - The Blue Jackets placed defenseman Mike Commodore on waivers yesterday, less than a week after he approached general manager Scott Howson and requested a trade.

If Commodore's time in Columbus is finished, he went out swinging, specifically at Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel.

"I've enjoyed my time in Columbus. I liked being there," Commodore said. "I like the guys. I like the front office. I love the fans and the city. I love being there.

"But I've been scratched in seven of the last eight games. We've got guys going down with food poisoning or the flu, and I still can't get into the lineup.

"I've sat quiet and I've worked my (butt) off all year. I haven't said anything, while Arniel has gone to the media and said, basically, that I can't play. It gets to the point where I have to have some personal pride and I have to stand up for myself."

...

"I still feel like I can play," Commodore said. "Sitting the press box, I'm not helping anybody. This is a lose-lose situation.

"You have your highest-paid defenseman sitting in the press box and you refuse to put him in.

"It was frustrating at first. I'm not letting it frustrate me anymore. I just don't know what it is. (Arniel) wants me out of here."

I think Arniel refused to put him in the lineup because he's slow, gets out of position too often, and takes stupid penalties. If you're the highest paid defenseman, you had better play like it. I seem to remember that they used him on the powerplay quite a bit, which continued to baffle me. This guy has a poor attitude and I hope his days in the NHL are over.

The AHL is starting to look a lot like the NHL of 4 years ago. Well at least there's a lot of familiar names there. The could probably ice a pretty good allstar team of salary cap casualties.

I think it was more Babcock having problems with him being fat and lazy.

Had problems with Hitch, also. I'm sure none of that has to do with Mike though.

Broadcasting is calling; he has a face meant to be seen on the radio. Either that or making balloon animals at Chuck E. Cheese.

Sorry... all radio station positions have just been filled by a homeless man.

Didn't he have problems with Babcock as well?

He has serious issues with coaches trying to make him work. I don't quite understand it but he appears to be allergic to actually doing the bare minimum.
