Brad Stuart is expected to miss 6-8 weeks with a broken jaw. No surgery was required, per mlive.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart won't need surgery for his broken jaw, but he will be out six-to-eight weeks, general manager Ken Holland said.

Stuart saw a doctor this morning in Vancouver. He was injured midway through the third period of Friday's 5-4 shootout win in Edmonton, on a blindside hit to the head from Tom Kostopoulos that Red Wings coach Mike Babcock described as "disgraceful.''

Holland said he isn't planning on making any moves right now. Rookie Jakub Kindl will replace Stuart in the lineup. The club also has the option to call up veteran Doug Janik or top prospect Brendan Smith from Grand Rapids, if needed.

"We got guys in Grand Rapids we think can play in the NHL, or are close,'' Holland said. "I might make some calls, but everybody is looking for the same thing -- more defense and more scoring.''

I swear, we are cursed since December. Every time we get a win, we lose a player to injury.

FYI, the usual time missed for a broken jaw is 3-6 weeks.

It's such and easy call to make, 5 minutes and a game. He didn't try and make a play in the corner with Stuart and get an elbow up. It was basically a drive by elbow to the head, he had no intention of playing the puck, just Stuart's head.

It's funny. Reading the game day thread on the Calgary boards, you wouldn't even know Kostopolous hit anyone let alone broke someone's jaw. They literally have said nothing about it.

Total bulls***. Stuart's a big loss. I almost wonder if he wasn't head hunting because he knew Stuart already had those stitches. Likely not trying to break his jaw but trying give him a good sting. In any event, the play was bulls*** and the league better review it and serve out a suspension.
