Kostopoulos suspended 6 games

Calgary Flames forward Tom Kostopoulos has been suspended for six games and will forfeit $29,569.92 in salary for delivering a blow to the head of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Brad Stuart in NHL game #609 on January 7, the National Hockey League announced today.

"A number of factors were considered in reaching this decision," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "Kostopoulos delivered a blow to the head of an unsuspecting and vulnerable player. As well, he targeted the head of his opponent and, while the hit was not from the blindside, the head was the principle point of contact. The fact that Brad Stuart was not in possession of the puck when the blow was delivered and the serious nature of the player's injury were also considered in my decision

I guess I'm okay with the 6 games.

I think he should have to be out as long as the player is out for. I know that is harsh but he gets back on the ice after 6 games. Stuart misses the rest of the season and he gets to come back and help his team try to make the playoffs. Stuart was having a great season in my opinion. I think Kostopoulos should have to sit out as long as Stuart is out. Like GMR said, it doesn't make me feel any better but you take what you can get.

Glad to see it was a pretty decent suspension based on the other suspensions this year. But like it was said already, it doesn't bring Stuart back any sooner and that's what really matters. I also fail to see how he only got a 2 minute minor for the hit during the game.

In that case, Bertuzzi will be out a while. ;)

Or at least garnish 1/3 of wages to injured player ...

I don't know what ever came out of that case but I hope Bertuzzi did the right thing and settled with Moore fairly, couple of million?

Only way to get these kind of 'intent to injure' hits out of the game would be mirror suspensions based on the length of period the player they injured will be out.

reading the calgary forums has just made me dumber.

Yeah, I read some comments on one of the forums and found the number of "the league NEVER hands out discipline unless a Red Wing is hit" comments funny. Its like some people just hate the Wings so much it makes them retarded and causes them to make statements like that.

I'm glad something was done, seeing as the Wings usually have no luck when in comes to retribution for injuries to our players.

I think that in order to make the point more clearly, the punishment does need to be more severe. I wonder if it would be better to enforce steeper fines since some of these goons are third and fourth liners whose lost minutes are not felt as much but who would certainly feel the pain more if it was coming directly out of their pocketbooks. Should we maybe start having them pay the injured player's medical bill? Or even better, how about the salary the injured player loses for the games he is out? That might get it through their thick skulls that these types of hits are disgraceful to the game of hockey.

the response from the Flames and Tom K. not that im surprised.

Flames response

The Flames issued a statement regarding the suspension on Sunday afternoon.

“We strongly disagree, not only with the length of the suspension, but also with the fact that Tom was suspended," said Jay Feaster, acting general manager of the Flames.

"While we are sorry the player was injured, we maintained in the hearing the hit was a legal check. The player was batting at the puck and Tom hit him in the chest and finished his check through him.

He did not target the head, and we do not believe the head was the initial point of contact. We respect the difficult job Colin Campbell has to do in these situations, and we appreciate the opportunity we were afforded to present our case; however, we simply do not agree with the decision.”

“I’m extremely disappointed in the League’s ruling as I believe I have not done anything illegal," said Kostopoulos. "I’m sorry that Brad was hurt on the play and I hope he returns to play soon, but it was never my intention to injure him and I definitely did not target the head. I maintain that I delivered a legal check to an opponent playing the puck. While I am upset with the League’s decision, I will serve the suspension in preparation for my return to the line-up to help my team.”

They're also the ones who think that the NHL fixes games so that Detroit will win. You'd be best served by not venturing over there.

As for Kostopoulos, about what I expected.

Gery Bettman LOVES us, the NHL fixes games in our favor, Dan O'Halloran loves us, players always get suspended for stuff they do to the Wings, the Wings never get suspended, our lively end boards make us cheaters, and the War Room is always on our side. If you want to argue with any of those you will instantly be flamed on by fans of 29 other teams that hate the Wings with everything in them.

I personally love this one.

Color me biased just like Colin Campbell.

North-South hit.

Stuart was hit in the front.

Stuart had his head down.

Stuart attempted to play the puck.

Are players really suppose to hold up on their hits and ensure that their opponent has their head up and indeed touched the puck that was swung at?

I don't care if a jaw was broken or not. The 2 minute roughing call was garbage to begin with. That and once again the refs let Holmstrom have his way interferring with the opposing team's goalie. Set of rules for superstars and the Detroit Red Wings and a set of rules for everyone else.

I would love to meet that guy IRL and tell him, to his face, what a complete and utter moron he is.

This one is a real gem too.

I'm glad he nailed that punk Stuart. Stuart is garbage, was beaking all game and deserved what he got. Enjoy your broken jaw chump.

You stay classy, Calgary.
