I also hope Ozzie can come back and play. It would be nice to see him move up a couple more spots on the wins list. He seemed to be turning it around and some of the iffy goals he did let in could be at least partly blamed on the injury he was fighting through.

I was thinking about this happening this morning.

A 38 year old goaltender who has suffered multiple(?) groin tear(s?) over his career...getting injured again when he's very close to the end of his hockey career.

Does anyone think that the odds of him recovering are low? (Considering most goalies retire <= age 38 [Proof] (And what I mean is that he never plays in the NHL again.)

I do.

I hope I'm wrong.

He'll be fine. I don't think this is going to be a huge deal. He's been playing well with soreness and ideally he'll come back in much better shape. I think this has more to do with addressing this issue all the way now instead of letting it fester when it's looking more and more like Osgood is as likely if not more likely to be the playoff goalie.

Well... at least this will get people to stop suggesting we play him more because jimmy is slumping. Don't wish his career ending because of an injury though.

nothing to laugh at there. i wish the wings would bring him back. i'm certain he can still get it done.

Honestly, me too. It'd be way out of left field but he could back up the team for a few months with no problem, I bet.

On the plus side, MacDonald looked good tonight, maybe he can handle a 50/50 rotation for two months, playing against the weaker teams? It's absolutely essential Howard is rested.

And on the bright side, maybe Ozzie can keep up his excellent play when he returns, he's had such bad luck the past two seasons he really deserves a good break like a chance to show he's back to form. At any rate, he should be rested come playoff time if Howard falters, right?

Ozzie's out, so Joey is the backup. JMac showed he's perfectly capable of performing that duty by cleaning up Howie's mess. The question is... when Ozzie returns, will Howard have solidified his position, or will he be going on a conditioning stint to Grand Rapids?

Babs and the staff actually chart out the goalie starts for the whole season before it happens. Barring injuries or complete meltdowns - thats how it works (plus or minus a game here or there). McDonald as as good or bad as he may be, will take over the starts Osgood would have had (as good or bad as he may be). Personally, I can't see McDonalds numbers being worse than Osgoods over the last couple seasons, so I figure its a wash on the backup goalie. Playoffs not included.

The curling took out Ozzie and Flip. http://www.letsgowings.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/hehe.gif

Oz has probably has played his last game. I don't say this because I'm a hater, but because I don't think Babcock trusts him - especially if McDonald performs adequately

I have a feeling its season ending, or indefinite to how long he will be out and he's had this injury since the for a while now, maybe they held out until he got his 400th win...Now hes done for the regular season, gonnna come back, ride the pine for the playoffs, i think he's played his last game ever..

I get a little suspicious at surgeries or long term injuries like this. Just like Malts and Drapes surgeries I get the feeling that its moderately elective and just a way to make some room for the kids and a graceful way out should they choose it (yes I know Drapes wasn't going anywhere because they're on the hook for him anyway). The timing is a little suspect too.

nothing to laugh at there. i wish the wings would bring him [Hasek] back. i'm certain he can still get it done.

No way in Hell Dom would come back to Detroit. He could still get it done at tha age of 46, since he's still playing very well in Europe and winning championships (last season) and in Russia, currently.

Back on topic: When Ozzie comes back, it won't be at 100% for some time. I would not expect him to take over the #1 spot in Detroit though I can understand how one can dream of that. A groin injury/surgery on a 40-year-old goalie is a serious problem (Hasek excluded, one has to accept that he is a unique specimen in athletics).

My fear is that Ozzie gets into some critical games and pulls a Derian Hatcher, because his body won't or can't do what he needs it to do. He doesn't deserve to go out like that. I would almost rather he retire having won his 400th game, on a top note.

I think this is Howard's time to show that he's the man. Joey Mac is clearly capable of backing up for now.

Is this really the question? Why would the wings send Howard to Grand Rapids in favor of a tandem of Ozzy, recovering from an injury and MacDonald, a number 3 goalie. This seems very unlikely even if he hasn't been playing his greatest.

Howie's mess? LMAO. Did you even watch the game? Some really really bad turnovers by the Wing skaters....

Howard not solidifying his position... You are really reaching bro

What is really funny, in your head you think this is a well thought out post filled with valuable insight.

LMFAO

Honestly, I'm wondering if Babcock isn't already thinking Osgood might be the playoff starter. Howard's not playing well and it's been going on for awhile and during that time, Osgood's improved and we know that it's despite injury. I think they sent him to surgery so he's ready for the playoffs and this doesn't become a lingering issue. He even said last night, "we did this now so we can get him back with 20 games left to get him warmed up and ready to go."

The second, fourth, and fifth goals were all on Howie.

Second goal: Howie gave up way too much on the fivehole and was super-slow closing it.

Fourth goal: Howie overcommitted to one side, and made no effort to cross back over when the pass back was made.

Fifth goal: Howard was in a one-on-one situation and just gave up with no real effort to try and save the shot at all.

Those goals are s***, and an NHL starter should not be giving up that stuff. The fivehole one was a positioning mistake, that might be acceptable as a mistake for a starter. But making no effort to make a save? That's the kind of stuff where he shouldn't even be playing in the NHL in any capacity.

Howard was not in net for the 5th goal you idiot. Bab's pulled Jimmy after the 4th goal. Here is a link to the box score, you can project whatever schizophrenic numbers that have no relevance

You must have been in sleep mode during this.

Kind of proves a bit about what you were actually watching or watch in general. Jimmy was bad on 2 of those goals, nothing more or less. Go in the GDT and thumb through, really. Will probably give you more of a general idea as to what was going on.
