GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 8, 2011 I really hope the Tigers can somehow get Chase Headley and an arm for the rotation at the deadline. I expect Dombrowski to be pretty desperate to improve so hopefully he goes all out, just not at the expense of Jacob Turner.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 9, 2011 I hate Derek Jeter and the Yankees even more, but congrats is well-deserved on a terrific feat. Gotta respect something that has only been done 28 times in baseball history.
Barrie 900 Report post Posted July 10, 2011 Congratulation to Derek Jeter. I'm a Tigers fan, but I've been a big Jeter fan for years. One of the local sports channels picked up the game so I was able to watch it. Unbelievable that not only Jeter's 3,000 hit was a HR, but he went 5-5, and got the game winning RBI! cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted July 10, 2011 Don't forget, his Dad named him after a hockey player. My favourite part of the photo is the guy, three-quarters over to the right, in the red/white striped shirt and his facial expression. And, how about Christian Lopez, the guy who caught the ball and gave it back to Jeter...from New York Daily News : ...Lopez received a "suite" deal from the Yankees: four luxury box tickets for every remaining 2011 game - including the playoffs and World Series - plus a ball signed by Jeter and a slew of other Yankees merchandise. ... GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 Yea hopefully we can hold on to the lead this year. We should, we're the best team in the division. That's not saying a whole lot, but I do agree the Tigers are the best team. I would be lying if I said I was confident the Tigers will pull it off though with their second-half history under Leyland. rwfan007 18 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 I think DD is going to be busy on the phones the next 4 days. We absolutely need another rotation pitcher and a everyday second baseman. If he can swing decent trades for both of those spots without losing Turner, I think we will have a decent shot the rest of this season. Jim just needs to forget resting his players until we have mathematically locked up the division. Every game now is critically important and he cannot be resting people for the playoffs like he did the last few years... especially since we never made the playoffs. The rest of this year may be the last chance Leyland has at coaching, and he knows it, so I expect him to go hard through to the end. We need to pounce on this weak division and start to play ball and pull away and not let the other teams stick around.
Travis 576 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 How so? Because Dick Williams was the manager of the '84 Padres team that the Tigers beat in the World Series.
Travis 576 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 It's great to see the Tigs grab the top spot right before the All - Star break. My confidence for the second-half comes from the fact that they just sort of hung around throughout the end of the first-half. It's not like they played lights out baseball, which would have me worried that they'd come back flat. They've just been there the whole time. Fitting that JV gets that win, too. Last Tiger to win 12 games before the All - Star break?
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 I don't think second base is even the most pressing need on the infield: that would without question be the need to upgrade at third. Everyone likes to harp on Raburn (and I'll admit it's more than justified), but Brandon Inge can hit .184 and his job is safe just because he's a good guy and has been here for a long time? Raburn is tearing the cover off the ball compared to Inge and honestly at least Raburn is showing some signs of coming around where as Inge somehow looks more lost at the plate than ever. Alex Avila isn't getting AB's because teams would rather take their free strikeout from Inge instead. Enough is enough with the loyalty garbage. The Tigers shouldn't have re-signed him to begin with; let's not prolong the mistake by playing one of the worst players in MLB on a daily basis while trying to win the division. I would rather platoon Kelly and Worth at third - Inge's defense is way overrated now anyways so the defensive dropoff would be minimal.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 11, 2011 (edited) Inge is better at 3rd than Raburn could ever hope to be at 2nd, though. Neither one of them can hit. Completely agree and I would never argue otherwise. I just don't understand the seemingly "free pass" Inge gets from Tigers fans and yet there's outrage over a guy hitting 30 points higher than Inge. Just because Raburn blows and plays every day doesn't make it right for Inge to continue to do the same. Like I mentioned before, Raburn is at least showing signs of swinging the bat better and if Leyland stuck with him through July 10th, we may as well see if he can catch fire like the second-half last year. If he doesn't, then maybe Guillen gets and stays healthy and takes over the position. In order of priority, I think the Tigers need a starting pitcher, 3rd baseman and then 2nd baseman at the deadline. The Tigers had a second baseman and he's hitting .287 for the A's now so I'm pretty much out of patience with a guy like Inge who is among the worst every day players in baseball. His defense isn't THAT good to let him play on a team in the midst of a playoff battle. Chase Headley would be an amazing addition for the Tigers. That's the fundamental difference between Inge and Raburn, though. Inge is a solid defensive 3rd baseman who balances Jhonny's lack of range and exceptional plate prowess. Raburn just sucks. He's horrible in the field and streaky at the dish. Hopefully Guillen can come back shortly after the All - Star break, even though he's made of glass. If he can just field his position and hit .270 we'll be better off.

Hopefully Guillen can come back shortly after the All - Star break, even though he's made of glass. If he can just field his position and hit .270 we'll be better off. Fair points. Not to overly defend Ryan Raburn here, but he's more out of position than anything at second base. Raburn is actually a pretty adequate outfielder defensively, which is where he probably belongs still. Unfortunately though, Dombrowski felt the need to pull the trigger quickly on a mediocre left-handed reliever forcing Raburn to take over at second. The Tigers have an abundance of outfielders so I understand the shift from that perspective, but it still comes off to me as a desperate move by the Tigers front office, similar to the Rick Knapp dismissal. Back to Inge though, you can't hit .184 in the big leagues and play every day. I will stand by my belief that Inge is still playing because of the loyalty factor and not on merit. He's probably the third best defensive third baseman in his own division so I find myself struggling to believe his defensive skills are enough to warrant a place in the starting lineup every day. Like I said before, Danny Worth is arguably Inge's equivalent on defense, or at worst a slight dropoff based on lack of reps at third.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted July 17, 2011 In a stunning turn of events, the Tigers have lost their first two games after the break. Let's hope it doesn't get anywhere near six straight like last season, but man is it hard not to start thinking about another second-half meltdown. Carlos is back at least and Inge hasn't played either game against the Sox. Scherzer pitched pretty well, but the Tigers somehow managed not to score a single run on 9 hits. Hopefully they can salvage a game tomorrow. I keep saying it, but the Twins are winning a lot again and they play the Indians and Tigers 8 straight at home starting Monday. They scare the hell out of me as they have been wrecked by injuries and they have a killer instinct the Tigers could only wish to have. Also interested to see who starts on Wednesday for the Tigs. Rumor tonight is they have interest in Derek Lowe. Or do we see the phenom Jacob Turner jump to the bigs in a playoff chase?
