"Everybody Hates Lebda"

Can anyone find the article where Eklund (I think that's who it was) praised this move in the offseason, saying it was one of the best signings of the summer? He predicted Lebda was good for "at least 40 points" and that Detroit would sorely miss him.

Honestly we could lose about four or five more defensemen and I still wouldn't miss Lebda.

lol yes. That's when it was first announced. There's one other article I can't find, possibly by someone else, about the leaf's chances preseason, touting Lebda as the reason they will have a fast jump on the blue line.

But lol... if Lebda is Burke's best move to date, the guy seriously needs to be fired from hockey.

This is hilarious. No one took us seriously when we laughed at Burke for signing him. How Burke has the reputation he does in the media is baffling. Dude's on par with Lamoriello in terms of vastly overrated GMs.

He's worse. He's only made 2 good deals in his life. Getting Pronger in Anaheim, and getting rid of Blake and Toskala last year. Other then that, it's stupid overpayment (Kessel), stupid FA signings (Komisarek), or anything he did in Vancouver that wasnt drafting the Sedins.

Throw that on the pile of reasons why that guy has no idea what he's talking about.

I love how on hfboards Wings fans have a reputation for thinking their players are the best at everything. It's not totally unfounded, but that should be a red flag when we all rip on Lebda.

Honestly I feel bad looking at that stuff because it seems to cross the line into personal hate. I've got nothing against the guy, I'm just glad he's no longer playing on the Wings.

In a thread on hfboards, they'd started calling him Lebad.

Not just signing him, but signing him for $1.45 million.

For more lawls read the comments on TSN report of him signing. Some examples:

u say lebda is not a good depth signing...ok then why has detroit kept him around for YEARS as a depth defenceman ? Because he was no good ? I can see making a mistake and getting rid of him after 1yr but he was there since 05/06 !! He must have done something right! Sounds like sour grapes to me !
Another stanley cup ring coming in to our locker room! Can't hurt one bit
another solid signing by Burke.. a lot of haters (as usual) but come game time they'll see then what Burke sees now. A speedy, talented depth dman at a reasonable cost which makes kaberle just a little more expendable. Great job Burke! I love it everytime the Leafs make a move and the haters have a fiesta.. just lets us true leafs fans know were scaring them a little more every day.

anyone who doesn't like this signing doesn't understand roster building. DEPTH

The following comment

1.45 million, for what? Something Detroit no longer wanted. Rocky and or Bull Winkle must have owed his parents a favour. Ba Ha Ha Ha. Can't wait for this season to start.....Ba Ha Ha Ha. This is the best comedy act I've seen in years. Ba Ha Ha Ha.

got a -21 even though he was telling the truth.

Yeah, I always found the articles around the time he got signed hilarious, with writers saying Detroit made a big mistake letting him go, and the Wings fans would be upset, and he would help Toronto win them the cup. Its like Toronto fans and writers are delusional and completely unattached from reality.

I know a LOT of Wings fans from all over, and not one of them was sad to see Lebda go.

What on earth do you think made him believe he should get a raise? Maybe he thought picking up the Wings' scraps was like hiring the worst student at Harvard.

It's baffling.

Over at hfboards there was a thread on the signing, and when I brought up the overpayment a few Leafs fans were saying it's because he would obviously fulfill a larger role on Toronto than he did on Detroit.

My response was basically, "for your sake, you better hope not."

Lebda, I believe, is on pace to have one of the worst +/- seasons in the history of the NHL.

In any event, I suspect he'll be in the AHL by next season at the latest.

Leafs have 6 wins in 21 games with him in the lineup. They're above .500 without him.

So much for Dave Poulin being the magic elixir in his career.

If you're right, the Marlies D will soon be paid more than the Islanders top six. :scared:

I laughed at his signing back when it happened. I have no idea why they thought he was worth that much.unsure.gif

Ohh well... hopefully they learned from it (but sadly doubt they did).

When was the last time Leafs fans actually liked any defenseman?

This is not on Lebda. It's on that whole franchise and it's inability to sign/draft/trade for good players.

Overpaying Lebda to suck is on the Leafs. Lebda himself is responsible for the fair market value of his suckitude, but not a penny more. So, essentially anything beyond an old boot, a rusty license plate, and some cold fries is on the Leafs.

They did the same thing with Jeff Finger.

I honestly can't remember the last time they had a great player besides Sundin. Maybe Belfour and Mogilny, although both were well past their primes in Toronto.

It's a legendary franchise that seemingly no top NHL star wants to go to.

Leafs fans liked him? I wouldn't think so, but I guess you know more about that fanbase.

I just remember all the love Aki Berg and Bryan McCabe got from Leafs fans. Those were the days.

People generally loved Markov and his quirkiness. But I'd say most people are fans of Luke Schenn.

Yushkevich was well liked, too. And Leetch. I don't hear many bad things about Gunnarsson, but his minutes are pretty limited.
