Wings Negotiating w/ Nabokov

So I guess guys can still pull a Sundin or Neidermayer, which I think is worse than this Nabokov situation.

Also didn't his Russian team just flat out get rid of him? Sounds to me they should be able to avoid the rule. But that little runt Bettman likes to act like a big shot.

I thought they said he came back to the states for family reasons?

As for Niedermayer, he didn't do anything that was shady in terms of the CBA, he just sort of put his team in a bind by not deciding for so long.

Maybe a "I'll only play for Detroit, don't claim me" vibe. He seemed to burn bridges with Philadelphia and obviously in San Jose (since Niittymäki just went on IR), so the list of Cup contenders with a goaltender need dries up pretty quickly.

If that is the case I will withdraw the last few posts I made.. Because this doesn't seem very Holland like if you just go out and bait other teams to claim a guy off waivers.

True to a point, but the main offseason issues with Nabokov was money and term and then waiting too long before compromising wasn't an option and openings dried up. I can't see a scenario where Nabokov would willingly sign with a team that isn't a Cup contender and that immediately eliminates a large portion of the league (the ones with obvious goaltending needs).

But he's been a free agent for a while now. And he's stated he wants to play in the NHL.

Plus, Nabakov requested to be released because of his family issues. He wants to be back in North America. so doubt since being a free agent money has had anything to do with being signed, which is why i think if a team wanted him by now, he would have been signed.

All I read was they parted ways, which I wondered was a nice way to say the team told him "bye bye".

Maybe after living in the USA for a while, after spending a few months in Russia again he was, "What was I thinking coming back here?"

Of course he has, but I was referring to his offseason negotiating duel with Philadelphia that went on for weeks. When Philadelphia decided to look within Nabokov didn't have options where money was good and the KHL came calling with bags of cash. Obviously he's realized money isn't everything and we find ourselves where we are today.

Things to consider...

Kenny has some serious man love for Chris Osgood and we are a pretty upstanding organization.

I have a hard time believing Kenny is doing this knowing he has about a 3.67% chance that no one picks up Evgeni. If that were the case, he probably just nearly killed Jimmy Howard's (what I believe to be) fragile confidance. All of a sudden, in one high risk (goalie moral wise) move, Osgood probably thinks Kenny believes his season (or career) is over, Jimmy thinks he isn't/cant be THE guy, and McDonald thinks he can't even be a backup during an injury. Since we've explored most other crazy scenarios, its seems that is indeed what is happening or the other 27 teams have been told by Nabby's agent that he won't play for them.

I also think its pretty far fetched that we would negotiate with Nabby 100% for another team in hopes that they would put Johan Hedberg or some other journeyman backup on the trade block for us. NJ knows theyd have first dibs on waivers, why dont they sign him? Why go through this mess.

I was just thinking about that too. Salei is pretty much Russian right? Markov too but other than them they haven't really dealt with many Russians.

Kolosov is basically Russian.

Great avatar, you know the season premier is tonight right?

I think one of his kids has health issues and the family didn't go to Russia/KHL with him.

Getting a lot of conflicting info here... but if all the presented info is true, I just don't see 27 other teams passing on him for that amount of money. I really don't want the Hawks to sign him.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Agreed on virtually all of this. It seems to me that the most likely thing is that Osgood's surgery, despite Holland's quotes today, was more intensive than previously believed. (Besides, Holland needs to play his cards close to his vest until something happens if it does, because he can't just let it be known if Osgood's rehab period jeopardizes his season.) I would like to think Howard would rise to the challenge, and I ultimately think he would -- the Wings aren't about to pull the rug out from underneath a goaltender they have spent so long molding into a potential Vezina finalist.

As I mentioned earlier, all of this is very, very intriguing.

Crawford is a good young goalie and Turco has a NTC. I don't see what they would gain.

After listening to Dregs on TSN just now, I think were gonna get Nabby. Theres a reason it's taking so long, there not sure why. And bigger news, Nabakov isnt the best FA goalie on the market right now. Emery is ready to go and his agent believes the interest is gonna pick up starting the next few days. Who knows, I'd definately like see Nabakov in the red and white though.

Please don't compare Emery to Nabakov ever again lol

not accourding to the people I have talked to. but if thats true that you cant trade for him then my bad but every one i have talked to said they can trade for him

I talked to Gary Bettman today on NHL hour SiriusXM radio. You cannot trade for him without him going through waivers again.

Maybe Kenny was kind of bored today at the office ... nothing much to do, no contracts to work on. He's thinking, "If we get him we get him, if we lose him, it took me and my staff 1/2 day of work." Why not generate a bit of buzz on LGW and TSN ... to remind everyone that I am still the Jedi Master :D
