evilmrt 636 Report post Posted February 1, 2011 Nobody in the hockey world thought that a team that is out of the playoffs would have any use for a 35 year old goaltender for a period of 3 months. And how does that bode for Snow's future signings? Seems like players would be much less inclined to even deal with him. Signing a player when you know he doesn't want to play there...mmmkay.... yeah that makes for a great reputation....
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted February 1, 2011 Nobody in the hockey world thought that a team that is out of the playoffs would have any use for a 35 year old goaltender for a period of 3 months. Apparently one person in the hockey world did. Honestly the Islanders goaltending situation seemed to get dire right around the time Holland signed Nabby, so the whole possibility fell in Snow's lap. But I seriously can't blame him for claiming a good and inexpensive goaltender when all his current ones are terrible or injured or both. This was a worst case possibility for Nabokov, and unfortunately for him, it happened. Still, he's a fool if he thought he'd be starting for the Wings this season and/or the playoffs. He would've had to clear 27 teams on the waiver wire and then clearly outplay Howard for the starting job. Those are two pretty substantial obstacles. And how does that bode for Snow's future signings? Seems like players would be much less inclined to even deal with him. Wingzman91 134 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 via the Dreger Report: "Nabokov remains firm on his decision not to report to the New York Islanders. Nabokov's representative, Don Meehan doesn't expect that to change and says his client may have to consider returning to Europe to continue his career next season if it's determined the Islanders retain his NHL rights." I kind of figured it would be a pipe dream that Nabokov would play out a full season at 570k. Well this might just end this topic, its been fun, but, I think Nabokov is officially done in the NHL. Nabby's rights are worthless unless Nabby says otherwise. Well in particular I meant if he thought he would be starting for the Red Wings in the playoffs. He would've had to clear waivers (extremely unlikely) and outplay Howard enough to convince Babs to start him in the playoffs (also unlikely. Babcock tends to have his horse and stick with it until painfully obvious it's not working). So a more realistic assessment of his situation could be sitting on the bench for the Red Wings, or being a starting goaltender for the Isles. It seems much more possible to outplay Dipietro in NY than Howard in Detroit, assuming Dipietro even stays healthy. drwscc 212 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 No, Snow has the equivalent of a Topps Hockey card with Nabokov's name on it,and it's worth about as much. Looks like Nabby will be heading back to Europe if they toll his contract, so what exactly did Snow get besides more of a bad reputation?

While Nabokov may not want to play for the Islanders, he claims to want to play in the NHL. If that's true, then Snow has a tradeable asset, one with good value, which he acquired for free. And anyone who thinks Snow is an idiot for picking up Nabokov not only shouldn't be an NHL GM, but shouldn't even be playing NHL GM because they don't understand that adding something for nothing is GOOD, even if the something you add turns out to be nothing. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 When can he try again, if ever? And I assume Snow would still have rights to him? So if that's the case, probably never...? Snow doesn't have "the rights" to him. Snow has a signed contract. Nabokov can be traded and play the same night. If Nabokov wants to play in the NHL, but not for the Islanders, all he has to do is talk to Snow this summer about getting traded. For how long must I repeat myself? drwscc 212 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 Noone is disputing that, in a vacuum, and with a different asset, Snow made a smart move for his club. He needed goaltending, and there was a pretty good goalie on waivers. The problem comes in when you factor in the contract he signed, which is definitely a "half year for a playoff team" contract, and not an "I don't care where I go, I just want to play" contract. If ANY playoff bound team had picked Nabby up, he'd either be playing now, or be sitting on the bench, because a Wings rival would have grabbed him, just so the Wings couldn't. The fact that a team with no hope of making the playoffs, and a history of mismanagement, picked him up is where the problem lies.

Selliria 76 Report post Posted February 2, 2011 so, why didn't the devils and/or oilers put in a claim too? by your logic, they should have. right? The Devils and the Oilers goalie situation was nowhere near as dire as the Islanders was. Everybody continues to forget that the goalie the Islanders were relying on got injured the night before Nabby was placed on waivers. I really don't understand how anybody could NOT see why Snow would grab Nabokov. You have to have some awfully rosy red glasses. If im not mistaken....nabby didn't sign a contract with the isle like you keep saying...he signed with the wings. He signed with the Wings FULLY AWARE that any team ranked below the Wings could scoop him up off of waivers. He signed that contract and he effectively agreed to the risks when he did so. He took a risk. He lost. Move on.

I don't know why you keep defending Snow. He has a contract for a guy that refuses to play for him. It's embarrassing that Nabokov would even refuse to report to the team. He could have avoided that with a simple phone call. The team sucks so badly that the guy is refusing to even put on the uniform and has said so publicly. Kenny signed a guy with the hopes that he would clear waivers and unfortunately he didn't. That happens all the time. In fact it happened to St. Louis twice recently. I am not sure how Kenny embarrassed himself. There was no way that he could have known for certain how it would turn out short of calling all 29 GM's. It was a long shot but no harm, no foul.
