Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended

Man, people are taking this harder than I thought they would. It makes all the sense in the world for the Isles to claim him. What was the contract pro-rated at, like $250k? They hardly have a healthy goalie right now. If anything some fans on Long Island might find it worthwhile to go to a game right now. Stop the garbage that Wong was just out to screw us. What benefit does he have to screw the Wings? I'm over it. On top of it, he's going to an eastern conference team. What if he had gone to a playoff contender in the West?

Cause they're getting him for 30ish games?

I don't see the point of a bottom feeder claiming a playoff goalie, on a one year contract. It's not going to do anything for them. The can't trade him, so they can't get anything out of him.

I mean, at this point in the season, it's a shame that a s***ty team would grab a good player like that. If they were a playoff contender, it'd still bother me, but not nearly as much. Hell, if it was a team that even had a CHANCE at the playoffs, and improving their goaltending would get them there, it would make sense.

The Islanders have just proven again that they are morons and are a joke in this league.

My thoughts exactly.

Irrelevant. So Detroit works out a good deal and now every gets a crack at "our" deal? How is that fair?

esteef

Who said anything about being fair. Until the rules are changed, that is what everyone has to work with.

Again, incorrect. Why do people keep posting on here like they are experts.

First and foremost, the contract type (1-way or 2-way) determines if a player can be sent to the AHL. Secondly a players experience also determines whether or not he can be sent to the AHL. Thirdly, the rules for players coming over from Europe dictate if a player can be sent to the AHL.

No movement clauses protect a player from being waived and being traded -genrelly requiring the player's permission. A no trade clause only protects a player from being traded but not waived.

You will find zero contracts written with no movement clauses when a player has AHL eligability (for conditioning purposes if a player is returning from an injury) because the player generally doesn't have that type of bargaining power yet.

I quit reading right here.

It isn't fair to us or him, but the rule is clearly in place to punish him for not putting his chips in with the NHL in the first place. It hurt us this time, but would you have wanted Hudler to have left for the KHL only to return by signing with the Penguins???

Wait... no, I DIDN'T BRING THAT UP!!! AHHHHH! *ducks and covers*

also, I know Hudler was never a free agent so this doesn't apply. Just pointing out the absurdity that players can leave the league and come as they please. That is why the rule is in place folks.

It is just because someone got the better of the Red Wings, even though it is within the rules.

More I think of this, the more I think it was shrewed by everyone involved. The Islanders do nothing more than try to boost ticket sales.

However, Holland knows that this will make all the players in the league notice how bad we want to win a cup and how much players are willing to sacrifice to come here.

It makes a powerful agent happy because he was the only GM willing to go through this waiver embarrassment to get Nabs a job.

It makes Howard notice that there is a ton more pressure on him and lets us see if he will respond.

It highlights what has happened to St. Louis with Svatos and creates a bit of good will with some of the GM's, while making some rivals scramble to figure out what to do in response.

I think they knew that, for all the effort of negotiating, they were not going to get him but the worst case scenario would be that they DID get him.

A smart cliff note summary of 1000 posts...Thanks ! Everyone of these points is right on target.

The only thing hurt in Detroit by this situation is our pride.

Holland doesn't seem to mind, and I bet money the players and fans do a bit. Maybe this is motivational psychology 901. PhD for Kenny.

I know, but that is supposed to be the intent of rules correct? Fairness, parity? Every team was able to make a deal with Nabby and didn't. Now that Detroit got something done other teams can swoop in and take him, and not just other teams, ALL other teams. Again, if Detroit already had him before he went to europe I can see where it might be construed as they were "hiding" him, but that's not the case here. Just doesn't seem right, and not just because I'm a Wings fan either.

Will it be announced if any other teams had claims in? So if the Isles waive him, who is next in line?

esteef

Unfortunately we'll never find out who else put in a claim, it could have been every other team between the Isles and the end for all we know.

Regardless, if no one else put in a claim and he doesn't work out there for whatever reason, they release him and he's ours.

I don't think, if the Isles waive him, it goes by whoever put in a claim the first time. Rather, it starts all over and everyone (including NJ) will get a 2nd chance to put in a claim if they want.

Nice post but one correction: being sent to the AHL has nothing to do with whether you have a 1 or 2-way contract, 2 way contracts simply mean that you make less money in the AHL. There are lots of examples of players sent to the AHL on one-way contracts [e.g. Wade Redden, Jeff Finger makin bank riding the bus].

Effin Islanders! What exactly does picking up Nabokov do for them? They have no shot at a playoff spot, they're in a rebuilding phase, most of the team is young players. How does a 35 year old goalie playing for them for a couple months, help them? They should be getting DiPietro as much ice time as possible or seeing what they have in the minors. Nabokov should be going to a team heading for the playoffs and just need a veteran goalie to make a serious run. Him going to this disaster of a franchise is stupid.

Being an original 6 team I have to defend my fellow original 6 team. The Islanders getting Nabokov is crazy. He's already said that he wants to play for a Stanley Cup contending team, and if that doesn't happen he will not report to the team that picks him up. He will have to sit out this season and the Wings can then sign him as a FA. Granted it blows, however, it looks like that's how this is going to be played out.

From Capgeek.com

A no-trade clause means a player cannot be traded without his consent. Consent is not required for waivers for assignment to the minors.

A no-move clause means a player cannot be traded, waived for a claim by another team, or assigned to the minors without his consent. This does not protect the player from a buyout.

Limited and modified NTCs and NMCs simply mean the player's contract includes specific terms for the clauses, usually allowing the player to specify a no-trade list of undesireable teams or a trade list of desireable teams.

If a player waives a clause to accept a trade to a new team, it is rare he will do so without a promise that the acquiring team will continue to honour the clause.

Flip the situation. If we had been the team to claim him, I doubt you'd have the same view.

Ok. I was wrong.

But this makes no friggin sense. The Islanders will not make the playoffs but they are going to use a 35 year old goalie who they will lose in 3 months instead of letting one of the youngsters develop?

And I thought that Chicago was a train wreck of an organization. I guess I forgot how poorly run the Islanders franchise is.
