Nabokov claimed by NYI, refuses to report, suspended

So if the islanders wanted him so bad why didn't they sign him in December when he first became a free agent?? Why wait till another team tries to pick him up, and then put a claim in??

Their only useful goalie got injured the night before Nabby went on waivers.

Based on what LeBrun & Bob McKenzie have tweeted already, I think that's the first step to the Isles being able to go back to the league and in essence make the contract binding next season as well. Wouldn't hold my breath to see Nabby in Detroit next year either.

Correct. If the Islanders keep Nabokov suspended into the summer (no reason for them not to), it's very likely the NHL will force him to honour the contract he has before letting him become a UFA.

anyone out there know what would happen if nabokov files for retirement? does his current contract then end? can he then come out of retirement? what happens after that?

Filing retirement papers forces the player to sit out for at least one season.

I just read the best idea for Nabby yet. Tell Snow you're ready to play. Show up, play a period or so, then fake an injury. It's been working for DiPietro for years now.

Then he can go where he wants when the season is over, and there's nothing the Isles can do about it.

that seems pretty unreasonable. so, if a player retires in june after winning the stanley cup and then, over the summer, decides to come back for one more year, he would have to sit out that season and try to make a comeback the following season?

This keeps getting repeated, and while I can see it happening... I'm going to repeat myself...

I'm not sure that there is precedent for upholding a waiver acquisition contract such as this.

I have to imagine that Nabokov signed the contract he did for what would end up being an abbreviated season, with a contender.

It certainly seems that Nabokov, his agent, and the NHLPA would have a case against this contract being upheld for an additional year.

I would think the Isles will move to trade Nabokov after July 1st, once the waiver issue is over and he has a dirt-cheap contract for 2011/12.

If the contract is upheld for the following season and Snow does this, he will be vilified as a GM... but it'd almost be genius, and someone will bite.

I don't think he is going to be in Detroit next year. I think the whole purpose of signing Nabokov this year was to get him to help Jimmy. If he can't get him this year, I don't think he is going to get him next year.

If the above mentioned trade after July 1st is in play, it'll depend on what Snow wants for Nabokov.

He can still help Jimmy next year. We will need to sign a backup. (I don't think Osgood will be back.)

I believe that Holland wanted to see him this year, almost an audition situation -- in addition to helping Jimmy, while he still had Osgood as an additional backup.

If he's a FA, has his heart set on coming to Detroit, and the price is right, I see it as a possibility.

I'd take Nabby as Jimmy's back up for next before some of the other goaltenders that have been thrown around here on LGW.

TSN report states :

New York owns Nabokov's rights and could keep him out of the NHL for all of next season should Nabokov not report.

why would be out for NEXT SEASON? isnt his contract until end of this year? come summertime is he not able to sign anywhere else?

The NHL would argue that the player has an NHL contract and he's required to play for whatever NHL team owns his contract. I would think how he got there is irrelevant. Though I don't doubt the 'PA would argue what you're saying.

Why sign him, when you can just wait until someone else does and pick him up on waivers?

exactly. the rule, as it stands now, actually prevents teams from signing overseas players. the only way you can get a player is if another team signs him and then you try to claim that player off waivers. i understand that this rule prevents teams from signing a whole bunch of KHL players (for practically nothing) towards the end of the season in order to help them in the playoffs. however, would it not have been simpler, and fairer, to make a rule that says you are allowed to sign only one of these such players and that way you get rid of the whole waiver nonsense. the waiver rule just doesn't seem fair to anyone involved.

:yowza:

He has drawn heavy criticism for not reporting to the team and later for hanging up on Islanders GM Garth Snow.“Yeah that was a misunderstanding,” Nabokov said. “I thought he was that Canadian reggae rapper Snow, you know the guy that did that song “Informer?” Dude hasn’t left me alone since 1993.”

"It's bulls*** really," said Wings GM Ken Holland. "It was all a plan to get some playoff team to ****** him up. Then for us it'd be one less team to worry about."

Realize it's a joke but, maybe not.

A-ha! I was right! Earlier when that article was first posted on here, that same quote said Dave Holland instead of Ken Holland. I didn't think it was part of the comedic aspect of the article.

Sorry about the gloating post. I just wanted to proclaim how right I was. :P

Fistly, before anyone jumps on, I know how waivers work. Right, got that out of the way.

Having a gander over on HF Forums I'm just amazed at the comments being made defending Snow for attempting to grab Nabokov. "How was he (Snow) supposed to know Nabokov didn't want to play for the Isles" seems quite a popular one. Hint, he signed for the Red Wings.

Yes, as I said, I know how waivers work but the head scratching and "whodathunkit?" type comments over Nabby not wanting to play for the league's comedy element, backed up by similar comments from Wang and Snow are just gobsmacking. Are the Isles really trying to play the "we're a great organisation, why would anyone want to turn us down" card against all the evidence that counters such claims?

Its a funny old world.
