Would he have to wait for the off season to re-sign with us?

He probably just wanted a chance to play in the NHL again. Nothing like having the Red Wings wanting to sign a player for other teams to take interest in him, with a small price tag on top of that.No matter what, there was a point to this. We just may not find out the actual one until this offseason.

If he makes it to NY.. NJ could claim him first and then move him or Hedburg...
Just Hedberg, if they try to trade Nabby they have to waive him first, all season, no matter how much he plays
We can not get Nabokov unless every team passes, I just don't see that happening.

They'd still own his rights until he fulfilled the contract, esentially forcing him into retirement...can't nabokov refuse to play for the team that claims him? what would happen then?
All I have to say about Holland and our off-season:
and finally
Holland is a damn good GM. period.

His contract will be over at the end of this season.Does a 1 year deal signed halfway through the year essentially mean a half year deal until the end of this season, or is it 1 year as in 365 days from teh date signed?

Yes you do. Whoever claims him, can't trade him unless he passes through Waivers again. This has been covered about 100 times now.
