If Lidstrom retires....

In the 2008 playoffs, I thought Kronwall was terrific, and was on his way to becoming a number one defensemen at some point.

I don't feel that way anymore about his play. He hasn't live up to those playoffs since.

Rafalski won't be around much longer than Nick, so we'll definitely have to think about getting another top notch defensemen in the near future, with our top pairing retiring.

develop from within. smith, almqvist, lashoff... see how they pan out first. we may have our own doughty/weber... if a player becomes available without a big hit of draft pick compensation or sending one of the better wings players/prospects packing, go for it. too many teams throw all their stock in a couple players and have a mediocre supporting cast. i would like doughty, but his price tag will be quite high. and draft pick compensation will be higher than kessel.

offer sheet to doughty, give him lidstrom money for the next 10 years if thats what it takes.

Doughty hasn't been so great since his injury this season.

I too thought Kronwall was the next in line, but I think he has pretty much reached his potential. Rafalski I have never thought to be a truly great defensemen, especially at defense. He also makes way too many unforced errors. He is a compliment to Lidstrom, but by no means a replacement.

But yeah... there simply is no replacing him. I shudder to think about when he retires, and hope it never happens. I think Stuart could potentially step up as the number 1 guy for a couple of seasons.

I dont think they should take Nick's cap space and just fill it with another defensemen, I'd rather they spread the money around and go for more depth signings and then in a few years go after a big D man who is available.

If Lidstrom retires, the entire team has to play 5x harder in the defensive zone, no matter who we get.

He's that irreplaceable. Smith may be the next Doughty-type player, but the next Nick Lidstrom won't appear in our lifetime, just like there won't be another Bobby Orr.

He's easily the #2 defenseman ever in my book, and he's just barely behind Bobby Orr. You don't find a replacement for that with $6M. You pray that he plays until he's in his late 40s like Chelios and Howe.

Edit: as for what I'd do with his salary when he retires, maintain our D with another $3.5-4M guy and use the extra cash to go after more depth at the forward position; we should have some good (possibly great) dmen coming through the system soon, specifically Smith.

I said it shortly after Steve retired (though I wasn't a member here at the time), but Nick's retirement is going to be harder to deal with both for the fans and for the players, than when Steve hung 'em up. Steve is irreplaceable and always will be, but there were players being groomed to follow him when he was gone. We have no such system in place re: Nick. When he finally decides to call it a career, there's going to be a giant hole to fill that may never properly be filled for years.

I said this a couple of years ago when Brad signed his contract, and boy did I get lit up! I guess that is because Kronwall was Nick, Jr. and he just played an awesome 2008 playoff and Ericsson was supposed to be the next best thing behind Kronwall. Fast forward to now and it looks like Stuart is gonna wind up being the #1 guy here after Nick retires, especially if its next season. Both Brad and Rafalski are signed thru next year, I can see Stuart getting a raise and Rafalski taking a cut. But next season, if Lids goes, we have Rafalski for the offensive end, I believe we need to get better (or tougher) on the defensive end. Someone maybe like Wisneiwski. We all know there is NO replacing Lidstrom, but the time is gonna come when you have to deal with it. Since we seem to have no choice but to have Kronwall here, we have two offensive minded defensmen in him and Rafalski, Stuart is their best defensman right now (uninjured) anyhow, and then add Wiesnewski, then let the young guys battle it out for the 6th and 7th spot. (assuming Salei isn't gonna be around either) I refuse to give Kindl the 6th spot because I just don't think he is good enough... Honestly the UFA defensive pool is not that good this off-season...

Sorry fellas im new to the forum. Probably should of looked over past topics before posting so my bad.

don't sweat it.

:D

i'd personally like that money spread out for a couple of quality players. some of it will be eaten up with the advance of our more talented players. lidstrom is as close to perfection as a player can get and i don't see us replacing that or that contract anytime soon.

I think sending Doughty an offer sheet is the best option. I want this kid on our team more than any other player. He would not "replace" Lidstrom, but would be the next best thing to securing a young defense man who will win his fair share of Norris trophies down the road.

Doughty, Kronwall

Rafalski, Ericsson

Stuart, Kindl/Salei

Smith

that looks bonkers to me

not sayin' , just sayin'

Nick just needs to hang on one more year.

By then Robo-clone Lidstrom will be complete, and he'll have laser-skates. Probably a hyper-quantum plasma stick too. Pre-programed with a cap-friendly atomic contract. Kenny is working on getting rules allowing laser-skate equipped Robo-clones with hyper-quantum plasma sticks into the next CBA. Shanny and Stevie are his allies so we're optimistic.

2014 will bring us 3-headed-Mechahudler and possibly Laserface-GhostOzzie to dominate the annual Moon Classic. Future Hockey is awesome.
