I would also like to point out during that fight that Mac kneed Claude right in the face when the refs held them against the boards.

He got absolutely rocked.

In that recent interview with Mac and Claude together for the first time... Claude was talking over the events and mentioned how Mac kneed him. Mac kind of smirked and went "yeah... I did do that."

I think my favourite part of that was when Shanahan tackled Roy because Patty was going for a cheapshot on someone. I can't recall who he was going for but Shanny saved the day. I loved Vernon pummelling Roy of course. That was the turning point for the Red Wings for sure. Up until that point the Wings were a skill team which did not show enough toughness in the playoffs. The Avs were in their head. I knew after that game the Wings had just won the Cup. They finally came together as a team. In 96 the Avs got away with too much crap. There was Patty's statue of liberty hack to Dino's balls. Claude's cheapshot from behind on Draper. Claude's gutless hit from behind on Kozlov. The Avs had it coming. I never hated a team as much as I hated the Avs back then. I was so happy when the Wings eliminated those idiots. McCarty scoring the winning goal in that March 26 game was great. The Wings came from behind and won and they were a much more confident team. In the playoff series, I thought the only reason in even went 6 games was because of Roy. I also recall Fedorov wanting to leave during one of the games in that series and Vladdy telling him to get his ass back out there because he didn't want him giving Russians a bad name. I think the 97 Cup win was my favourite and it really started with that March 26 game against the Avsnots. Great memories.

Mac was lucky to not get thrown out for two fights. He had gotten hugely lucky and only received a double minor for roughing for beating the snot out of Claude.

Right, I've read McCarty should have been thrown out of the game for going after Lemieux. One of the linesmen was telling the ref, when he was handing out the penalties, that McCarty should have gotten a game for triggering the brawl

Then DMac goes and scores the game winner, and the rest they say is history!

Yes, that was brutal! Lucky for Claude, DMac didn't land it right.

Too bad they didn't wait a couple years though, the 08 run isn't on it. I wish there were DVD's of that Wings documentary from 03 we could buy.

Yea I think they need a part 2 for the Wings. Along with 2008, the OT winners against Chicago from the 09 WCF could be on there.

Maybe they're waiting for a 2011 Wings Championship ;) before the next set comes out.

The guy doing the game with Mickey on PASS sports is annoying.

Beyond annoying. I remember a number of people on the board arguing that it was actually Colorado's announcer.

I love the off their feet hit between Shanahan and Roy.

I think my favourite part of that was when Shanahan tackled Roy because Patty was going for a cheapshot on someone. I can't recall who he was going for but Shanny saved the day.

Roy was headed for McCarty and Shanahan cut him off. The two of them meeting in mid-air is my singular favorite moment in Red Wings history.

Resuming...

Kocur was scratched for this game. I'd like to know why he was, knowing all the animosity brewing.

Wife pointed out that the score and time in the game are almost never shown. It's like radio, gotta wait 5 minutes to know the time.

3rd period starts slowly compared to the rest of the game. Continuas play though, something this game lacks until this point.

Big Scrum, Ozolinsh goes after Maltby. Maltby going ballistic after biffing on a breakaway

McCarty dings the post! Ahh. Down 5-3, waiting for a furious comeback...

LaPointe! Nice rebound goal.

Shanahan! Had to be less than a minute later, banks it of Roy's leg. I remember that goal especially. I mustang flipped out pretty good at the time.

Wow, they showed that 8 players scored 50 or more goals the year before this. That's wild considering the stuff these guys are getting away with.

Starting to get some end to end action. Shots are 41-16 Detroit near the end of the third.

Federov looks like he's far more talented than almost all the players. Like its just too easy for him.

If you were introducing someone to the game of hockey, just show them this game. Hitting, fighting, tons of goals, breakaways, 2 on 1's, good passing, agitating, rivalry...its incredible. No real goaltending though. Lol. But you already knew that.

Wow. Sandstrom was playing Gretzky, pass to himself off the back of the net, then a beautiful pass to Homer out front.

I forget about Sandstrom being on that team.

I wish Toronto was still in our conferance.

Last five minutes of the third are pretty intense, all Wings though.

OT is very short...but man I love that goal. Beautiful. Larionov to Shanahan to Mac. And who wouldn't have wanted Mac to get the goal. Just wonderful.

Yeah I recall Sandstrom. We picked him up from the Pens for Greg Johnson. He didn't score much but he was a valuable checking forward.

1st period - Soooo much hooking, holding and interference! :D

Vernon and Roy!

Greatest call in Redwings history :siren:

I hate how we have to watch Jones on Versus now.

Yeah. This is a little off-topic, but after the injury to Brad Stuart, the Versus crew was talking about it and Keith Jones (I'm 90% sure he was the one) referred to it with "Now let's go back to namby-pamby land..." and then proceeded to spew sewage about how it was a travesty that anyone was upset, it was a good hit, and any action by the league would ruin hockey bleh bleh blah.

I haven't been able to watch Versus coverage since.

Well, that was an awesome watch last night

Loved seeing Maltby + Draper in their prime, after all the hate thats been spewed on this forum towards them the last few years, to see them skating, hitting and agitating was a joy.

And lulz at the Ward - Severyn fight, when Severyn loses his jersey you can actually see the fear in Ward's eyes "Oh F*&k! I'm gunna get my face pounded! :scared: ". Luckily for him Devorski intervened, cos Severyn was in no mood for mercy

He played on a line with McCarty and Yzerman.

Funny - was watching the DVD series, and this game in particular just a few days ago.

{sigh} - brings back memories of the type of hockey that I fell in love with many years ago...These heated rivalries are few, and far between these days for any number of reasons.

Yup, I love watching those 90's games, those are the ones that really got me into the Wings and hockey. Arguably "The Brawl" was a defining moment for the 1997 team that brought them together right before the playoffs. I remember watching that game (man, I was 15 lol) with my buddies after playing a bunch of street hockey that day, which was our high school pre-game tradition. Good memories.

On a side note, I think its crazy watching these older games, and comparing the graphics they use for scores/time and what not, to whats on TV now. It looks soooo dated, and it wasn't that long ago. Makes me feel old!!
