...If you were starting an NHL franchise, there was no salary cap, and you had your choice of any 20 players in the league, who would you chose and why?

I've posted TSN's latest (1-28-11) NHL Player Rankings (not fantasy-related) below as a reference point of sorts: http://www.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/feature/?ID=10467. I've cut out all those 31 and older (though I'm sure I'm going to get some Pav, and even Nick, requests) and reposted the list.

I'm really looking forward to hearing the responses!

I like some of your picks, but it's kind of hard to take you seriously when you're taking Eaves and Carcillo, etc.

Both can play physical and put up points. What's wrong with that?

you can have any forward in the league - not even thinking about the salary cap here - and you want eaves on your third line? really? to each his own and all...but, man.

My Team

Zetterberg Crosby Nash

Ovechkin Stamkos Towes

Kessler Getzlaf Kopitar

Duchene Seguin Gaborik

Doughtery Weber

Green Seabrook

Burns Letang

Miller

Fluery

Crosby said himself he would start a build around Zetterberg. List is irrelevant.

When did Crosby say that?

The winning team is:

Getzlaf/Zetterberg/Stamkos - Getz plays the Bert role of net presence and playmaker, Z is Z, Stamkos is primarily the gun.

Ovechkin/Backstrom/B.Richards - Richards mirrors Ovechkin, providing another quick sniper on his off wing for Backstrom to pass to.

D.Sedin/H.Sedin/L.Eriksson - Eriksson's two-way play and overall skill should mesh with the twins

Kesler/Toews/M.Richards - You have to like it when your fourth line consists of three of the game's top defensive forwards, all of whom are offensively capable.

J.Staal - All-around forward for spare spot.

Letang/Weber - Letang's puck moving matches well with Weber's style.

Enstrom/Keith - Enstrom/Buff has been great this year...and Keith is an upgrade on Buff in most respects. His style should definitely mesh at least as well with Enstrom.

Doughty/Johnson - Two excellent young defensemen who actually do play together.

Byfuglien - Having a great offensive season without any real defensive responsibility.

Rinne - Potential Vezina candidate this season

Quick - Best goalie in the league under 25, and having a great year.

Iginla - High end power forward for the spare.

Letang/Weber - Letang's puck moving matches well with Weber's style.

Enstrom/Chara - Enstrom/Buff has been great this year...and Chara is pretty much an upgrade on Buff in every way possible.

Doughty/Keith - Norris finalists from last year, both are having worse seasons this year but still doing very well.

Johnson - Doughty's partner, arguably having a better season.

Rinne - Potential Vezina candidate this season

Quick - Best goalie in the league under 25, and having a great year.

Chara and Iginla are 30 or under?

Interesting responses so far...

Here's my defense:

1) S. Weber

2) D. Keith

3) D. Doughty

4) R. Suter

5) B. Seabrook

6) D. Byfuglien/M. Green

E. Karlsson/K. Letang/T. Enstrom/K. Yandle/B. Burns/M. Green/M. Staal/J. Johnson

...I watch about 90% of the red wing's regular season games, and 100% of their playoff games, but I don't watch many other teams because I'm watching a lot of Pistons and Michigan basketball games as well. So - sadly - a lot of my picks are based on 2010 olympic performances. If you were young and made team Canada (Ken Holland's all-star team, essentially), then you make it (Weber, Keith, Doughty, Seabrook). Ryan Suter was incredible in the olympics as well, so he makes it. Then I guess I'd go with Byfuglien as my sixth guy because he was so incredible in the playoffs last year. And I guess that Green would be my seventh guy because he was so incredible in the regular season last year. But I'm really interested in hearing what the board has to say about the other all stars I listed...and don't get to see very often - Letang, Enstrom, Yandle, Burns, Staal, etc.

Enstrom is Atlanta's top defenseman, not Byfuglien. The only thing Green is incredible at is scoring goals and passing the puck to the Caps' offensively talented forwards. He's not nearly as good as the hype of the past couple of seasons has suggested, and he's terrible defensively.

1) Enstrom v. Byfuglien: Didn't realize that Enstrom was considered #1. But there's still something to being 250+ lbs and being able to neutralize the physicality of someone like a Chris Pronger in a playoff series, isn't there?

2) Agree on Mike Green...there was a reason he wasn't chosen for team Canada despite leading all NHL defensemen in points at the time. My top 5/6 is pretty much set, but how would you rate the rest? Green/Enstrom/all the other guys I listed.
