Visit to Hockeytown

Hi fellow Wings fans,

My family are big fans from Canada's east coast. 4 of us would like to travel to Detroit in March to see the Leafs (Mar. 26th) and Hawks (Mar.28th) games. We have never been to Detroit before. I'd appreciate it someone can help me out with:

a) How to get tickets. I've searched online (at ticketmaster, stubhub, etc.) and there doesn't seem to be much availability or even decent prices. Is there a better way? I need a block of 4 tickets for each game.

b) Accomodations: Any suggestions. We will be in town for 3 or 4 nights. Something in the $100/night range would be great. We will have a vehicle.

c) Fun things to do in Detroit: Any suggestions for must see venues or eateries (and drinkeries!)?

Thanks in advance for all your help. Can't wait to see JLA and the Wings!

Wayne.

Those are probably the 2 most expensive games ,especially the Leafs, being the amount of Canadians it brings to the game and they just don't play too often anymore. I mean ebay and stubhub are probably where you want to look but good luck trying to get them at any type of cheap.

Not sure about accommodations, but some of the suburbs like Rochester or Royal Oak would be a good choice. Downtown hotels for the most part are just a no lol. It's just not my preference anyway. I think the little towns are cool too because some of them you can head back to the hotel and then out to a pub or something and hang with some fans.

While you are here, though I would suggest going to Hart Plaza and maybe even seeing about getting a dinner reservation for the "Detroit Princess". Probably the best way to get a great view of the skyline plus they take a trip by the Canada border at Windsor. Also, taking a trip across the bridge is always a good time too. Caesar's Palace is a blast and they usually have someone performing there. MGM Grand and Greektown Casinos are something I can tell you won't be disappointed with. End of March the weather SHOULD be getting better so I would think that walking around Monroe St. that time of year with all the good eats and bars is a guaranteed hit for ya. Nemo's bar is a staple for games. They shuttle you to and from games and it's a pretty cool hang out spot I think. Great burger, just about every beer you could imagine, and wait staff is quick. Just some of my 2 cents about it all but hope you find some of this helpful and you have a great time at either game!

Parking at the casinos and catching the people mover over is a cool idea. Right after the game the lines to the people mover are huge so when I was in town last, I hung around the Joe and got to take pics, go down to ice level and all that jazz. Killed about 30 mins or so, by that time didn't have to wait long to catch a ride back to greektown. Plus it gives you something to do afterwards; the casino is always bumping when I've been there.

If you drive to the game, parking in the arena's garage is by far the most convenient route, esp if you don't know your way around. I did this for my first game and once you park, you just follow the mob to the arena, virtually no way you could get lost or mixed up. I can't remember exactly how much it was since it was a few years ago, but it couldn't have been more than $15, well worth the proximity and ease.

You should def swing by Hockeytown cafe at some point too (extra points if its right before a game). The atmosphere is awesome- everyone's in their jerseys, cool memorabilia, good food. Like they said, it runs a free 5 min shuttle to the Joe as well.

Is it hard to get in and out of the arena garage before/after the game? The casino/Nemo's idea sounds good, though...hmm, so many options. (I'm coming for the Wings-Pens game at the end of March, woohoo!) Does anybody know anything about the Holiday Inn Express in Allen Park? I've been thinking about staying there.

I really want to go to Hell (I love saying that), but I don't know if I'll have time. Is it worth seeing? Also, does the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame have a lot of Wings stuff?

If you want to park right by the Joe, I would recommend parking on Cobo Roof. It is cheaper ($10 instead of $15), and less of a pain to get out of than the arena garage. You will still have a little bit of a wait, but not nearly as much as the garage (this has been my experience, at least).

If you want free parking.. you can park at the Hard Rock Cafe's garage, go into the restaurant, go to the gift shop and have your parking validated. They have a free shuttle going over to the Joe, and they serve free shots on the ride.

I loathe the people mover after games because there are a million people trying to get on and it takes forever. I usually park on Cobo Roof or Hard Rock.

There are some hotels in Troy, which is not too far from downtown, that are nice. Also, Hockeytown Authentics is in Troy, if you've never been there, it is a fun place to visit/shop.

Good to know - thanks! Cobo roof sounds like a good deal if I don't end up going to a casino first. I'm not a huge fan of crowds/waiting in line forever myself, but like Sergei said, I'll probably take a ton of pictures and wander around after the game, so I guess I'll just wait and see.

Yeah, I HAVE to go to Hockeytown Authentics for sure! I don't think I'll buy a jersey since apparently the numbers on the back are smaller, but I know I'll find something good. I'm so excited. Everybody thinks I'm nuts for going to Detroit in March, but I really couldn't care less - it'll be like Paris in the springtime to me!

Not really a tour per se but definitely a great way to view both sides of the river. I do highly recommend if you plan on coming here. Usually provides some great scenic stuff. Really surprised people are suggesting the parking at the Cobo roof and all that. Nemo's is the best. I repeat myself a lot I just don't want people to get dooped into dealing with all that post-game traffic. Nemo's is a shuttle service that just plows through traffic and takes you back to the bar after. But, hey what do I know? lol

Thanks! Sounds really promising and I will check it out.
