This is an important point. Without Hudler, would you say Detroit lacks scoring? No. Complete opposite. But does Detroit have the defensive strength for a long playoff run? Not at all.

Doesn't have to be Hudler, just he offers nothing except scoring so if I had to trade a forward in a situation like that I'd choose him.

Exactly, people sometimes seem to forget that you have to give up something in order to get something back. Hudler with his salary and for what he provides is our most realistic player to move.

In order to seal up our defence maybe our offence needs to take a little bit of a hit, but if thats what is necessary to stop this team from giving up so many goals then that is what must be done. We are simply not going to win much in the playoffs if this team doesnt seriously crack down on the back end.

Chris Phillips and a 4th for Hudler will do the trick I think. We need to get a legit stay at home type defenceman that can play like pre concussion Lilja did. Right now the wings have a bunch of guys who ALL try to play offensively. Salei even jumps up in the play quite a bit and plays a little bit risky. A shut down stay at home, shot blocking, PKer is what the wings need to get. Phillips is a good person to look at

I think the problem is fans have short memories.

When we had everyone healthy on this team at the beginning of this season,..including modano,..this team was unbeatable.

When we get everyone back,..we'll still be unbeatable.

Now i'm the one who typed all that up and all,..but even I know the rebuttal to this has merit, When we won the cup in 08 we brought in Stuart who was exactly what we needed then.

It stands to reason something similar wouldn't suck either.

I agree. I don't think we make any moves this season. Getting Stuart back is big and then getting Modano back before the playoffs will be very nice.

This off season will be worth watching for the Wings.

If Detroit can get another defensive defenseman with some physicality and potential for a few points every so often, I say we get him. I don't trust Kronwall or Rafalski defensively enough for the postseason.

Hudler is showing he can still be a great complimentary player in the NHL again and I am sure GMs will not ignore his short term potential.

I wouldn't mind Phillips, but I think there are better options out there. Phillips turns 33 in March, and the last thing we really need is another aging player. Ideally, i'd like a younger stay at home defenseman that we could lock up for a few years after this year, like Ladislav Smid from Edmonton, among others. Our defense hasn't been consistent this year and I think Kenny is going to shake things up, although we have looked a bit better these last few games.

Replacing Salei with Phillips would be great and would seriously upgrade the defense. My only reservation is the fact that we'd be replacing a cheap defenseman ($1.1 mil with bonus) with a much more expensive one ($3.5 mil cap hit for Phillips). But we'd be asking Phillips to play a smaller role than he's used to (and paying him more than you pay a player on the 3rd pairing).

Also, in his last two playoff runs (20 and 6 games, respectively) he's put 0 pts up. That makes me wonder how good his first pass is. Maybe it's just his role that limits his offensive output in the playoffs, but you'd like to see a bit more offense when it counts from a guy being paid that much. Stuart is a good comparable-- he's asked to play the same role as Phillips but can play the PP in a pinch. Phillips is a more imposing physical player but Stuart fits the Red Wings team better. I really don't see enough Senators games to make an educated judgement on this.

Lastly, Phillips is a UFA this summer while Hudler is locked up at a reasonable price until next summer. With the prices continuing to inflate I can't help but wonder how much more Phillips would get this summer.

Radek Martinek is 34, makes $1.5 mil and plays for the Islanders so he can probably be had for a bag of pucks.

So losing Hudler would improve the team's scoring? No. The difference between last year's roster and this year's roster is scoring depth. Subtract Hudler and you're asking a 40 year old Modano coming off a serious wrist injury to be the difference in scoring depth.

Moving forward, this team will have one less young forward who's a proven scorer. I'm not sure how positive that is given that we have far more proven bottom 6 players graduating to the NHL than we do top six players.

I highly doubt there's going to be any kind of trade happening this trade deadline. The reason being is that we don't have enough cap space, if there we're to be a trade Filppula needs to be involved in this trade because his a NHL decent second line player and is still young. Either then that I only see some of the kids being a potential trade baits but if I'm a GM of another team I would be going after Filppula. His great defensive play and offensive upside gives him the edge.

All tho I highly doubt Holland is ready to part ways with him.

Although seriously, I don't see how Hudler is adding to our scoing depth when guys like Cleary and our bottom 6 guys are chipping in with more goals than before. They're the difference this season. Not Hudler.

For the record, I don't expect much from Modano when he comes back. He was struggling to begin with and now hes been out the game for so long...I've got some spiced potato wedges with some ketchup and they taste good.

No changes right now Stuart is our add on... E actually looked decent these past 2. Kindl isn't ready though. If anything add a depth defensemen.
