You can buy a jersey at the Joe but you'll pay 30-40 more than you can get it elsewhere. I really like Fanatic U but it's in the suburbs. Hand sewn Jersey's there are around 115.00 out the door. As far as entertainment, there are a few nice breweries in Detroit that are fun to visit. Just google Detroit Breweries. You can always gamble we have 3 casinos I think MGM is the nicest and has three nice but pricey restaurants. There is Campus Martis which has ice skating, and a Hard Rock Cafe right across the street. As far as entertainment you really have to travel outside the city itself to get to museums there is Green Field Village in Dearborn, our Zoo is open in Royal Oak, You could check and see what's playing at the Fox theater... That's downtown, Chelios owns a bar downtown with some hockey stuff in it and there's Hockeytown Cafe not to far from the Westin.

I stayed at the Doubletree Guest Suites.Doubletree
It was a nice hotel, and within walking distance of the Joe.

Does anyone have an idea of the cost of a cab ride from DTW airport to the Doubletree? Mapquest says its 18.5 miles or about 24 minutes... a solid approximation of cost would be greatly appreciated.

I would contact the double tree and see if they have a shuttle available to pick you up from the airport. If not give checker cab a call 313-963-7000.

edit: Better yet, if you dont mind spending like $40, call a company called metro cars. They have nice Lincoln's that can pick you up. Much cleaner and drivers are good guys.

Places I'd stay if coming in from out of town for a long awaited get-away to see Wings game with wife:
MGM Grand Casino (Hands down best...IMO) - Pricey, but beautiful hotel, the best rooms downtown, great location, tons to do pre/post game, great restaraunts (Woflgang Pucks, Bourbon Steak, Saltwater, etc...).
Book Cadillac - Again, a little pricey but great rooms, great location, great restaurant in lobby (Roast - Top Chef contributor and elite chef Michael Symon's restaurant).
MotorCity Casino- Nice rooms, kind of pricey for overall package, but good location in Greektown.
Holiday Inn Express - Adequate rooms, great location, great price.

Where I wouldn't stay:
Atheneum Greektown - Place used to be really nice and great location in Greektown. Stayed there for a party a few months ago....OMG...not good. They told me they are renovating the entire hotel within the year...I'd hold off until then.

May I be the first to say prematurely.... Welcome to Detroit...we're really glad to have you visit!! Have fun, and if you can, forget about all the stereotyping that you hear about Detroit, and you'll have a great time, meet some great people, and experience a great city that was once (and will be again someday) the worlds most respected and envied cities.

Hey guys. This post is pretty late, but I wanted to take a few minutes to post a follow-up after our first trip to Detroit and the Joe.

We ended up staying at the Westin Book Cadillac. Since we were celebrating our anniversary, I reserved a suite. I was quite pleased upon checking in when the front desk guy upgraded us to an executive suite (i think that's the name). the hotel and, specifically, the suite was amazing. absolutely incredible views, the staff was ridiculously friendly and the food was great.

I will say that all the typical stereotypes I had heard about Detroit were shattered during our trip. Quite literally everyone we met and/or spoke to during our trip was very warm and welcoming (ok warm is probably a poor choice of words considering it was February). This was true of all walks of life...from the people who in the hoity toity hotels, restaurants, etc that were being paid to be nice to us all the way to the "regular joe" folks and even the homeless people we encountered. We were really impressed/touched by the sense of pride and the overall positive energy in the people of Detroit. Given the economy and overall situation in many parts of the state, that was very impressive.

I will, however, say that we were afraid that the stereotypes were true early on. i kid you not, we decided (probably not the best idea) to take a quick walk down the block just outside the hotel. literally within 2 minutes of walking out the westin door, we had the pleasure of seeing a homeless gentleman stumble toward us on the sidewalk and then vomit on himself. mind you, this was at about 2:30 in the afternoon on a wednesday lol. luckily, things turned around quickly and that was the last such encounter we had hehe. had to share that though.

we had great seats at the game...unfortunately we just happened to pick what would turn out to be their worst game of the year to that point (vs stars) and we had to wait until late in the 3rd in a game that was already out of hand to see the wings score. even with a bad game and a loss, it was an incredible experience. so much so that we're actually considering making a return trip if (knock on wood) the Wings make it into the next round of the playoffs.

anyway...just wanted to say thanks again for the help picking a hotel and more importantly, salute the people of the D for being incredibly friendly during our visit. it was a *very* pleasant surprise!
