I am a Finance Major. But in all seriousness I am not too crazy about the idea of Government's paying 100% for a new hockey stadium. If they do they should keep at the very most 25-35%.I thought you had to be ignorant TO BE a business major...

Cool images, but I agree with the Mayor. Its easy to throw out these beautifully rendered, detail-less forms with pretty lights and get everyone excited for USS Enterprise Arena, its another thing to add realistic construction detail, building codes, functional constraints, and budget.
It's worth keeping an eye on, but right now its just a VERY pretty example of sculpture at the building scale; not functional architecture. If it does get done it will look NOTHING like that, in form or texture. Its the building version of a concept car.

That does look pretty cool. Not sure it can be done, but still.
Oh it can be done. The question with 99.9% of all construction is whether it can be done correctly while staying on time and on budget.

Maybe they'll just keep throwing time and money at it until it's doable instead of starting from a feasible design at the outset.

Thanks TeeMan!

After all, the BOK Center in Tulsa, OK looks a lot like its drawings with a s*** ton of glass wrapping the building.

I really would have hoped the firm on the job could have come up with something a bit more substantial and "fleshed out", rather than some preliminary ideas sculpted by a tech-savvy intern with some cool lighting effects. That was supposed to be proof that a new arena was on its way? Don't get me wrong, its cool and all, but holds no greater weight beyond the images themselves.

Article says construction beginning in 2015, and even that is subject to change.shovel's supposed to turn this year, isn't it?

Comparing a developed idea like BOK to shiny curves with lighting effects is apples to oranges. Like I said, worth keeping an eye on, and the shapes themselves are not impossible, but time and budget will dictate that, as will code and the actual function of an arena. But as far as a building, I don't see it. I see jingling keys

This design is a stretch, but look at this

The way construction is anymore, that very well might be what EDM gets. I think the extra walkway is a bit of a stretch, but EDM can have a nice building that seats 18,500 for $450 million.

Orange.

Nothing about BOK raises an eyebrow, curved curtain wall. Feasibility aside, the Edmonton arena proposal is a LONG way from being a developed building design. Fun PR stuff, but hardly proof of a viable project.

According to an update on the downtown arena project released by the City of Edmonton, the arena as currently envisioned is projected to surpass the $450 million budget set for it, and no plan is in place to deal with any additional costs.

City councillors turned down a request for more public money for the arena project Wednesday, while the Katz Group now insists an “iconic” arena cannot now be built for $450 million.
The disagreement may put the future of the project in jeopardy.
Mayor Stephen Mandel wouldn’t say how much more money the Katz Group was asking for.
A bit of a "power play" by the city councillors?

The Katz Group says it won’t meet with city council to discuss the downtown arena, at least not yet.
This has the Mayor in a twist because he now claims that the city of Edmonton doesn't know what Katz wants.
Leading to this most recent lob:
From Sportsnet:
The Edmonton Oilers caused a stir Saturday night after a controversial tweet was sent from the team's official Twitter account.
RT @rjmackinnon #Oilers not locked into #yeg. #yegarenadeal fail would mean loss of #nhl club.
Good thing Katz still has the lease to the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton.

Oilers owner Daryl Katz led a group of team brass on a tour of Seattle's KeyArena on Monday, sparking speculation that he may move the team out West if he doesn't get an arena deal finalized in Edmonton.
Katz knows how to turn it up a notch.
