Dustin Penner on the Block?

The Edmonton Oilers are open to trading Dustin Penner, and while the Los Angeles Kings are interested, the price may be too high right now.

TSN's Ryan Rishaug reports that the Kings and Oilers have and preliminary talks, speculating that the Kings would have to give up prospects Brayden Schenn or Kyle Clifford to make it work. It's a high price, but the Oilers have the luxury of being sellers in what appears to be a market full of buyers. So they will probably hold out for high draft picks or high-profile prospects when trading both Hemsky and Penner.

If the Oilers trade Penner and Hemsky, they free more than $8 million of cap space for next summer, which would give them an incredible amount of flexibility in free agency. They have the second- and third-highest paid cap hits on the team, respectively, so swapping them for picks and/or prospects would put the club in pretty strong position for the future.

Brayden Schenn has 34 points in 15 games with Saskatoon. No way Penner commands that kind of price tag, especially considering any team in the league could have had him for a song only 18 months ago.

Clifford, though, is an interesting possibility, although the Oilers need a young goaltender/defenceman with top two potential more than they need another u-21 top six forward.

I'd take Penner but not Hemsky. Both are worth a prospect and 2nd rounder MAYBE. Also hasn't Hemsky been injury ridden this year?
