Mckenzie: Brent Seabrook about to sign big deal with Chicago

Probably a fair deal. He's averaged 30 points the past 5 seasons and he's on pace for around 40 this season and it's his 6th season in the league at 25 years of age. He's very very good defensively and very good offensively. Maybe a half a million to a million too much, but it seems like a fair deal for a player of his caliber.

I guess it's a good thing Kronwall has troubles staying healthy, cause' he put up 51 points in his first season of more than 70 games and puts up the same numbers while playing a quarter less of the game Seabrook plays lol.

Fair deal. But they have about 13 million for 6 forwards (7 if they want to carry a 13th forward) 1 defenseman (2 if they want to carry 7) and 2 goalies (Corey Crawford will get a pay raise for sure)

They really screwed the pooch on Campbell...

Defensively, Campbell has done more than anyone had expected, he's just screwed the pooch on the offensive side of things. he had his 52 points campaign and then 38 and now maybe finishes with 25 points. If he would have kept that 50 point or above average the deal wouldn't look bad, but the dude has just sucked since his first year there.

Where they REALLY messed up, was with Huet.

Not to mention if this deal is accurate, they're going to have ~20mil tied up in three defensmen (Campbell (7.1), Seabrook (6), Keith (5.5))

I don't see how Seabrook should be making more than Keith. Brent must have an awesome agent.

And nobody's gonna take Campbell or Huet, so are they trying to still be average for the next few years?

Well, technically Huet isnt counting against the cap since the hawks waived him and sent him to the Swiss league. Which is a dick move to do. You sign a guy and then waive him a couple years later, then bury him in Europe til' his contract runs out.

2nd highest paid defenseman in the game. $7M+ for 8 years. Anything less than perennial Norris candidacy is bad, and Campbell wouldn't be that scoring 50. 70+ maybe, but still would probably need to improve defensively.

$6M for Seabrook isn't bad though. Not great, but not bad. At least unlike Campbell he might still get better.

If Campbell was annually top 5 in scoring, showing that consistency that most defensemen lack, while playing above average defense, his salary would have been justified, but he isn't producing offensively, which is why the deal is terrible and is what i was trying to get at. But, to be fair, Campbell was in the top five for the Norris his first year with the hawks and if he would have kept that up his contract wouldn't look that bad. But man, his consistency is garbage. At least he has a good +/- with a sub-par Hawks team.

Keith is signed to one of those monstrous cap-busting deals like Hank or Franzen, with throw away years at the end to push the cap hit down. He's making $8M this year.

Sure, if he had become a much better defenseman than he had been for the first 8 years of his career, that contract might not have sucked. But even 'top 5 scoring with above average defense' would really only put him in Rafalski/Gonchar/Streit/Markov territory.

I don't think he had any Norris consideration at any time in Chicago. There was a lot of talk about him when he went to San Jose, but even that was only fringe consideration. That (at the time) was the only time in his career he had scored 50+, and his only season top 5 (or even 10) in scoring. But it got him paid like Lidstrom/Pronger.

What he's actually done has been worth ~$3.5. That would have meant $7M+ more this year. They could have kept Buffy, Ladd, and Versteeg. Or maybe Niemi.

Still a bit of an overpayment considering they just signed Keith and Hjalmersson.

Their top 4 guys are all good at their position, but they are all overpaid for what they do, even Keith (depending on the structure of his salary that year, someone said this year hes making 10?).

I'm kind of surprised they aren't letting Seabrook go. He would get a lot on the open market, and they really need that extra cap space.

Oh well, I never wanted him here anyways. He has been lazy and out of shape for most of this season. That deal isn't the worst in the world, but still an overpayment, IMO.

So if this contract figure is correct and I'm not mistaken, they have roughly $44 mil locked up by 8 players (Campbell, Seabrook, Keith, Hjalmarsson, Kane, Toews, Hossa, and Sharp) for next year.

I'm sure they have others locked up next year at low salaries, I was just going by the big names that I was pretty sure have deals beyond this year.

Huet is off the cap anyways so it doesn't matter...
